You're The Only Hope For Me

Chapter 15

“We need to run, as quickly and as quietly as possible, back to the hospital without them seeing us,” Gerard whispered to her, his warm breath tickling her ear, “The only issue is that the only way out is past them so that’s why we need to be so careful.”
Hazel swallowed and nodded her head, not trusting herself to speak. One wrong move and they were both dead, she knew that and she could tell Gerard did too.
Gerard gripped the gun tightly in his right hand, his expression grim as he moved his gaze from the gun, to Hazel’s face, then to where the men were sitting ahead of them.
“You ready?” Gerard asked, looking back at her face again.
“Yes.” Hazel said firmly, it was now or never and to be honest she just wanted this night to end.
“Follow my lead, and stay close to me.” Gerard replied and began to walk, carefully treading across the ground and holding the gun ready for use.
Hazel followed, staying as close as she dared to him and tried to stay calm, they could do this. They would get away and see Frank and he’d be alright and they’d go home and Gerard would get better and they’d all live happily ever after and everything’d be okay.
“FOCUS!” She screamed in her head, and concentrated on the dark shape of Gerard just in front of her. She was slightly worried that Gerard wouldn’t have it in him to shoot someone if it came to it, but she ignored that fear because there was still the chance that they could still possibly escape without being seen at all.
They skirted round, just inside the trees and Hazel’s heart was in her mouth. They’d almost made it, they were past halfway there and they were going to do it! Hazel felt herself fill with exhilaration and she was about trembling from excitement. She felt strangely safe considering the circumstances, she was pretty sure that Gerard would protect her if necessary. She wasn’t sure if he’d do it out of his own kindness or caring for her, or more because Frank was his friend, but either way it was enough. Hazel saw the light of a car through the trees and knew that they were close to the road, she felt herself begin to smile. Yeah, they’d as good as made it.
A loud crack from in front of her made her jump and brought her to her senses, she froze.
“Fuck.” Gerard muttered, and froze also. He’d stepped on a twig she realised and they didn’t know if the men had heard it.
The talking from the grass abruptly stopped. Shit, they had. Gerard buried his face in his free hand, she wanted to comfort him but was too scared to even move.
“What was that?” The squeaky guy asked suddenly.
“I don’t know,” Jeff replied, “Barry said he’ll be here in another hour so it’s not him, it might be the girl though.”
“Or the guy?” Squeaky piped up.
“Yeah,” Jeff’s voice was suspicious, “You go check them, I’ll go see what that was, we can’t take any chances of being caught like this.”
The sound of footsteps reached the two of them and they remained still, however Jeff seemed to know exactly where they were and the steps came closer.
“Run!” Gerard hissed and the two of them bolted for the road.
“Not so fast!” Jeff snarled from somewhere behind them and threw himself upon Hazel, knocking her to the ground.
“GERARD!” Hazel screamed and Gerard spun around, saw her and raised his gun.
He didn’t shoot however, as Hazel saw that he wouldn’t have any control over where the bullet hit because her and Jeff were struggling so much.
Instead, he slipped the gun up his sleeve and ran back towards her, throwing himself upon Jeff and trying to pull him off Hazel.
Hazel was terrified.
She knew that if they did something the consequences would be very serious, these men had proved that they were violent and Hazel was sure they were quite willing to hurt her and Gerard. She was still waiting for that kick of adrenaline that would stop her hands from shaking, she was trembling so much that she insisted that Gerard took the gun. As well as the fact that she knew full well she wouldn’t be able to shoot anyone herself.
The only thing that stopped Hazel just giving up and accepting her fate was the thought of Frank, the thought that some things were worth living for, and a lifetime ahead with Frank was definitely on that list. Plus she’d already gained Gerard’s friendship and trust; she didn’t want him to see her as a coward and change his mind about her. Gerard didn’t seem like that kind of person, but she didn’t want to take any chances.
Hazel winced as she wriggled out from underneath Jeff’s body, Gerard was keeping him occupied but he wasn’t strong enough, Hazel couldn’t see this ending well at all.
Footsteps sounded on the ground near Hazel’s head, and seconds later the other man pulled Gerard off of Jeff. Gerard steadied himself quickly and whipped around, at the same moment Jeff leapt to his feet and grabbed Hazel, roughly clapping a hand over her mouth to prevent her from crying out.
Hazel felt something prick her arm through her shirt and draw a line heading downwards. It felt like a knife and stung like a bitch, Hazel kept silent not wanting to give Jeff the satisfaction of hurting her. She felt tears prick her eyes though as she realised the unfairness of the situation, Jeff kept slitting her arm, very swiftly and Hazel gritted her teeth in pain and anger.
Gerard was fighting the American man who kept throwing punches, Gerard was avoiding him but hadn’t managed to get a hit himself yet.
Still Jeff kept cutting at her.
A loud smack sounded and the other man fell onto the ground, Hazel presumed Gerard had punched him in the head and knocked him out. Jeff dropped the knife and reached behind him, rapidly bringing his hand round again and holding Hazel too tightly.
Gerard whirled around and brought his fist back, preparing to hit Jeff but Jeff’s roar of “STOP!” halted him.
Jeff was standing holding Hazel tightly to the front of his body with his hand covering her mouth, Hazel felt the cold tell-tale muzzle of a gun press against her temple. She tensed and tried to pull away from it but Jeff’s grip was too strong. Jeff removed his hand from her mouth but clicked the trigger slightly, making it clear that if she made any sound she was dead.
“If you hurt me I kill the girl.” Jeff stated sternly, staring into Gerard’s eyes, “And I mean it, pretty boy.”
Gerard held his head high and stared defiantly back, “Let her go, what’s she ever done to you?”
Jeff laughed coldly, “Nothing!” He gloated, “Although that’s the best bit, I could do whatever I wanted to her and there’s nothing she can do about it!”
Still sniggering, he placed his hand on her waist and began moving it downwards, bringing it back up and feeling her body roughly. Hazel squirmed, repulsed as her skin crawled horribly beneath Jeff’s touch, although she kept silent, conscious of the gun pressed against her head. Gerard looked sickened, but didn’t make any move to stop it, worried that anything he did could cause the end of her life.
Hazel tried her best to shut out the hands of the man who was invading her privacy and called up something she remembered hearing earlier, a sudden idea began to form in her head and she locked eyes with Gerard. He stared back at her, and she flicked her eyes from his, to the gun pressed to her head, to his again, then back to the gun and back to his, praying that he would understand what she meant. He seemed to follow her and narrowed his eyes slightly before shaking his sleeve, and bringing the gun he had stuffed up it earlier into his hands. Hazel was glad of the long sleeves as they hid his hands, although Jeff seemed pretty preoccupied with exploring her figure. Hazel held back a shiver and tried to focus on her plan.
Gerard seemed confused at her but didn’t react, only continued to stare at her for further instructions. Hazel mouthed the words ‘shoot him’ and Gerard’s eyes narrowed even more in confusion. Hazel continued mouthing ‘shoot him, in the knee’ and Gerard parted his lips slightly, requesting it again. ‘Shoot him in the knee’ Hazel mouthed widely and twitched her own, flicking her eyes downwards so he’d look also and see the movement.
His eyes followed the movement of her own and flicked back upwards, a look of slight understanding in them. Gerard flicked his hand then twitched his own knee, and looked at her for confirmation. Hazel grimaced as Jeff’s hands moved across her chest but managed to mouth ‘yes’ and shut her eyes tightly for a moment whilst she gathered herself before opening them again.
Gerard bit his lip and looked at the ground, Hazel could see that he was finding it difficult to get the courage to do it, he glanced back at her apologetically before looking back at his hand, she noticed it was shaking a little bit.
Gerard moved his head downwards and Hazel felt herself curdle inside, he couldn’t do it. At that movement Jeff pressed her a bit harder and Hazel couldn’t help herself but gasp in discomfort, Gerard’s head snapped back up again and he took in her expression and pain, his facial features changed into a hardened mask and he glared at Jeff, shooting him a look of pure hatred.
Jeff laughed at Hazel’s reaction but his laughter was cut short by the bullet from Gerard’s gun meeting his knee, the crack of the gun firing had been pretty loud but Jeff’s high-pitched scream of agony was also quite loud. Hazel felt the grip that held her and the gun that was pressed into her slip as Jeff fell onto the ground. Hazel immediately kicked his head with as much strength as she could muster and the scream silenced.
Gerard quickly ran towards her and took her in his arms, squeezing her tight. However, for the first time in ages it felt like she was the one doing the reassuring instead of being reassured, she could feel Gerard shaking and felt a surge of love, out of both gratitude and pity, for him, causing her to hug him tighter.
Eventually he broke away, “It didn’t feel right, nobody should have any power like that, ever, I could have killed him if I wanted!”
“Don’t worry it’s fine, you’ve not killed him, anyway he’s a bad person so you did the right thing.” Hazel soothed him and he nodded, staring into space.
“Let’s call the police and get this mess sorted.” Gerard suddenly stated and knelt down beside the fallen bodies, reaching into their pockets until he found a phone.
Straightening himself up, he reached out for Hazel and pulled her close as they dialled the emergency services for the second time that night.
