You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison

Too Much, Too Late Or Just Not Enough Of This

The annoying scream of that god-awful alarm cried out again, signaling the opening of any and all cells in that block. I’d been sitting in my cell sulking for hours, extremely disappointed in myself for breaking my vegetarian habits. They’d only been serving a number of different assortments of meat for days, and after going three without- I caved. That juicy hamburger on my tray was just sitting there, begging to be devoured. As much as I hated myself for thinking it, it was fucking delicious.

Mikey stood up immediately and merged with the crowd, leaving me and Gerard behind. I always liked to wait and be one of the last ones out; I never did very well with crowds. Gerard noticed after our first few trips outside and would wait with me. He didn’t like me walking alone, especially since I looked like a chew toy to half of these perverted psychopaths. I really needed to change my look. Of course, he clearly wasn’t happy with Mikey wandering off by himself either, but Mikey needed his space. He’d been distancing himself lately, and I wasn’t sure whether I should take that as a sign of him declaring his independence, or a sign of him succumbing to depression.

“Here.” I was just about to trail the crowd when Gerard pulled me back by my right shoulder, shoving me a yellow pad of paper and a non-toxic red marker into my chest. I shot him a confused look, taking the items in my hands.

“Why do I-“

“Go!” He ordered, nudging me into the corridor. I quietly regained my composure and walked down the hall, turning the corner and passing Ray. Or, almost. He stuck his arm out in front of me and stopped me.

“Iero. Inmates aren’t allowed to bring contraband outside.” He barked, holding his hand out.

“Ray.” Gerard spoke up. He leaned in and whispered something I couldn’t quite catch into his ear. Ray simply nodded and sent us on our way.

Gerard followed quickly behind me, surpassing my footsteps as we entered the Yard. I spotted Mikey sitting with Bob at a simple table next to the court. Looking at Gerard’s face, I saw he’d seen them as well. A low growl formed in the back of his throat, and he stopped me. He turned me to my left, and pushed me in that direction. My only other friend was sitting alone; it looked like he set himself up with a game of solitaire.

“Go talk to him, I gotta be alone with Mikey for a bit.” He quickly turned away, leaving me to fend for myself. Okay, it wasn’t that bad. But he still abandoned me.

I clutched the marker in my right hand and slowly walked over to the kid, sitting down on the opposite side of the rickety table he was seated in.

I peered at the cards laid out in front of him. His game was almost completed; he only had a few cards left in the deck. He stared at the game, picking up the ten of spades and placing it in the final pile. Everything sorted itself out, and within the minute he’d finished the hand.

“Nice job.” I spoke quietly, and his head shot up. I guess he hadn’t noticed me before. He shot me a smile and gathered his cards, shuffling them together. He performed flawlessly; every time I tried to get fancy with my shuffling, I had to play fifty-two pick up with myself. It wasn’t fun.

“Hey, so I figured…” My voice trailed as I put the pad of paper and marker on the table in between us. “If you won’t talk to me, maybe you’ll write?” I gave a weak smile and pushed it towards him a little.

“I-I mean, you don’t have to, but I was hoping you would at least tell me your name. It’s getting a bit weird having to refer to you as ‘The Kid’ or ‘that guy’.” He over exaggerated a face-palm and scooped up the marker, taking the pad in his hand he began to scribble relentlessly.

You’re the first person who hasn’t flipped their shit trying to get me to actually speak to them. Good man.
Kellin

“Your name’s Kellin?” I questioned. He simply shrugged his shoulders and nodded. “Damn, badass. Much better than Frank.” I scoffed, and he chuckled.

“Hey, you heard of ‘War’?” He nodded and split the deck in half, handing it to me. We continued to flip cards and mumble swear words, or at least I did- he would mouth them, every time we lost. He had just beaten my King card with an Ace of hearts when I heard some shouting behind me. Kellin looked over my shoulder and I turned around. Mikey was storming away from the table, a desperate Gerard at his heels.

“No, Bob. I’m done. You’re a fucking asshole, and I don’t wanna talk to you anymore.”

Bob started to shift away from his seat, but his friends were yelling from the court.

“Hey Bryar! We’re short a player, come on!” I saw him turn towards the court. You could tell he was pissed.

A very disheveled Mikey and Gerard joined us at the table. Mikey situated himself next to Kellin while Gee sat next to me. Gerard picked up the pad of paper, his eyes scanning over the messy handwriting.

“Kellin, huh?” He repeated, showing the brief sentence to Mikey, who just shrugged his shoulders, uninterested.

Kellin knocked on the table, gaining all of our attentions. He motioned for the pad of paper, practically snatching it from Gerard’s hands. He grabbed the marker, which had rolled off the table at some point, and began to scribble again. He flipped it over, encouraging us to read it.

Dude, Bob murdered someone yesterday. How is he not in some sort of Maximum Security shit right now?

“He pulled a favor from Hitler-stache, he’s got the whole place wrapped around his finger.” Gerard muttered. Mikey just rolled his eyes like he didn’t believe a word he said. He nodded and started writing again.

Whatever. They’ll probably have some sort of therapist or psychologist making their way around everybody the next few days, so head’s up. Just act like it didn’t bother you and you should be fine. And don’t fucking cry.

He put the paper closer to Mikey and I this time. Gerard peered over my shoulder and chuckled softly.

“He’s right, though. Just don’t break down and you’ll be fine. It’s not that bad. Now, deal us in.”

I pushed the pad of paper to the side. “But we’re in the middle of a g- ok then.” I changed my thoughts mid-sentence as Kellin scooped up my cards and shuffled them back in, splitting them up evenly between the four of us.

“I totally would’ve won that, though.” I muttered, flipping over my first card.

Kellin shook his head as Gerard spoke up. “Yeah, right! He totally had you by the balls. You should be thanking me for saving you the embarrassment-hey!”

He landed on the grass with a soft thud. Oops, did I do that? I plastered a fake innocent look on my face.

“You asshole!” Gerard laughed as he climbed up on his seat.

“Pshh, I-I don’t know what you’re talking about, that was clearly Mikey.” I sassed

“Hey!”

“Oh really? Last I knew Mikey’s hands weren’t covered with several layers of ink.”

"Touche"

We all burst out laughing, Kellin snickering into his hands, before finally continuing on with our game. I couldn’t help but wonder, though, if they really were going to make us under-go some sort of psych evaluation. Guess I gotta wait and see.
