Be The Flame In The House Of Cards

Brick By Boring Brick

Gerard rolled his eyes as he spoke. "Man, these doctors don't really like us. I tell them about how such good friends the both of us are, and I can see some fake smile spread across their faces. Tony and I keep together, and he tells me everyday that I shouldn't be here. The doctors, they stare and shake their heads and..." he stopped, breathless.

I stroked his cheek lightly. "What about the blackbirds?"

"Oh, they're cool," he smiled, chuckling a bit. "They look out for me, and when they almost flew into you, they didn't mean it. I think they really like you, and Tony's..." Gerard giggled.

"What?" I wondered why he had dissolved into a fit of laughter.

"Tony didn't like you at first, but now I think he has a crush on you," he let out, and turned to the wall. "Sorry for blowing your cover, Tony."

My friend's imaginary friend has a crush on me. What are the odds?

"So, when do people visit you?" I asked, gaining a frown and a crinkled nose expression from Gerard. "Yuckity yuck."

"What's wrong with visitors?"

"Ugh," he started running chilling fingers through his raven hair. "The people who visit me, they just ask questions. And they write down stuff and they laugh at Tony. They laugh at me, and they're really mean," he said, rather too quickly.

Those weren't visitors, they were sent by the government, probably. What are they called, interviewers or documenters? One or the other, they most likely wrote his mental illnesses in a journal and shared it with the public. With no means of helping the patient.

The earth is but a cold, cold world.

I nodded slowly and hesitantly. "How about your family members?"

Gerard's eyes shot up and faced mine, hazel piercing into mine, like a death stare. It was as if he was giving me a warning, and if I disobeyed, a huge consequence would follow.

"They have busy, busy lives," he spoke harshly.

"Too busy to see you?" My voice croaked.

"Yeah," he saw the pain in my eyes and smiled. "But we're in touch."

"As in, you call them daily or weekly or monthly?"

"No."

I shook my head. "Okay, so they write to you?" I didn't know much about Gerard, and maybe his parents and siblings were technophobes. I mean, if my parents are homophobes, then his can be scared shitless from a telephone or television.

"No."

"Then what," I asked, quite confused. "Like, how do you keep in touch?"

"Names, I remember their names," Gerard said, smiling brightly. "That's how we keep in touch."
