Run Away With Me

Two

Callum stretched as he rose from his bed. He padded across the carpeted room and to the hallway, heading in the direction of his older sister's room.
"Evi?" He spoke, opening the door a crack. Noticing the room was empty; he pushed the door open and stepped inside. "Hello?" He also peeked into the empty bathroom, finding nothing. He turned to leave, but stopped upon seeing the note that rested on her pillow. He picked it up in his skinny fingers. Being only seven years old, Callum couldn’t read well. He brought the note with him to the kitchen where his father was pouring himself a cup of coffee. "Daddy?" He asked, receiving his father's attention. His father replied with a grunt. "What does this say?" He placed the note on the counter.
His father picked it up and read it aloud. "Thanks for nothing. Where'd you get this?" He set his coffee down.
"Evi's room."
His father then rushed away from the counter and down the adjacent hallway. "Carol?!" He shouted. His hung over wife then stumbled out of the bathroom.
"What is it?" She asked, pinching the bridge of her nose.
"The kid found this in Jen's room." He said, thrusting the note in his wife's face. Her eyes quickly scanned over the note and together they stormed up the stairs and into their daughter's room. The wind blew in from the window she left open and pushed the curtains forward. The father rushed forward and slammed the window shut. "She fucking left." He muttered. "I'm glad the bitch is gone."
"Daddy, please don't call Evi names." Callum quietly spoke up. His father then turned and glared at his son and hit him, causing him to fall to the floor.
"I'll call Eevee what I want." He growled, saying the name Callum used in disgust. He crumpled the note and let it fall from his hand as he left the room. After his parents exited, Callum stood up, rubbing the side of his head and picked up the note. He opened the closet door and tugged on a sleeve of a shirt his sister had left behind. Dragging the shirt behind him, he moped back to his own room. He tucked the note in a drawer as well as a few drawings he'd worked on with Genevieve. He crawled back into bed, clutching the shirt to his chest, and he cried. Callum didn't know where his sister went, or when she left, but he could only hope that he'd see her again.
