Carry On

Relief

I’d lost my temper and yelled at him. In less than a day, I’d already managed to lose my first friend in this town. Gerard was the first person in a very long time that had ever showed me respect, and I mistook his kindness for pity. As soon as the words escaped my mouth, I felt ashamed.
“You don’t know me. I’m not helpless, and I’m not your charity project.”
He didn’t respond, he didn’t get angry. He ran from me, and I knew I wouldn’t be able to keep up with him. I remained frozen in the place I stood when he walked out the door. An hour had passed since he left, and I can’t think of anything but him. “Goodbye” seems inevitable at this point. But I need to apologize, I need him to come back. I shuffle through my dresser drawer, fumbling for the small sheet of paper he’d given me the day before. I need to call him.
The first time I try, it rings around seven times and then sends me to his voicemail. I try again, praying that this time he will pick up the phone. On almost the seventh ring, I hear a click. A voice I recognize comes over the line, but it’s not Gerard’s. The person sounds distraught.
“Who is this?”
I recognize the voice as Gerard’s brother, Mikey.
“Frank,” I explained. “May I speak to Gerard?”
A muffled noise filled a long bout of silence. It sounded like Mikey was crying.
“Gee was in a wreck. I’m in the ER, waiting to find out his condition.”
I didn’t know what to say. I was terrified that I’d lose my new…my only friend. After several moments of silence, Mikey finally said, “I know you’re really important to him. Please come to the hospital?”
I agreed, hung up the phone and shoved it into my pocket. I quickly slipped into my black vans and I left the house. Due to my medical condition, I wasn’t supposed to run, but I ran with every ounce of my strength. The hospital was less than ten minutes away by walking, but I needed to get to him faster. I needed to make sure Gerard was alright.
My lungs burned as I continued to sprint, stopping only as often as was absolutely necessary in order to catch my breath. In about five minutes, I arrived at the parking lot of the hospital. In front of me, a sign lit with red fluorescent light read “Emergency”. I raced inside towards the front desk and asked for Gerard’s room number.
Luckily, Gerard’s room was on the first floor of the hospital, so I was able to reach him quickly. When I arrived, Mikey was leaning over Gerard in a chair next to the hospital bed. I rushed to his side. Mikey appeared very calm, even though his brother was practically lifeless next to him.
Gerard was breathing, and that’s what really mattered. Mikey explained to me that Gerard had gotten fourteen stitches above his eyebrow. He had major blood loss, but the doctors were able to stop it. He would need at least a week to recover, but he would heal well.
I sighed, relieved. Gerard survived. He could have died. My last words to him could have been my worst. But now they didn’t have to be. It was unusual for me to hug people I hardly knew, but I was so thankful, I pulled Mikey into my arms. I guess he welcomed my hug, because he wrapped his arms around me too.
