To The End

Chapter 1

The ticking of the clock hung in the dusty air. He heard it all day, every day but right now it was tormenting him. All was so still and quiet, not all that unusual for a small town police station in the middle of nowhere but today seemed even quieter than most. The Sheriff scratched behind his ear with the pencil he was holding before glancing toward the solitary figure in the cell in front of him.
In three hours, the prisoner hadn’t moved or said a word. In fact he hadn’t said a word since the deputies brought him in. They had barely got a half smile when his prints came up with a long record and a flashing light to the Feds. The sheriff had attempted to question him but come up empty deciding instead to leave him to the FBI and shoving him none too gently into the cell.
One deputy had stayed, the other returning back outside to check the prisoners car and see what else they could find. A message had arrived just after saying the feds were on their way and then there had been nothing to do but wait.
The young man in the cell had turned his back on them, sitting on the floor and leaning against the bars so they could see nothing but his black leather jacket and shock of dark hair. He had stretched his legs out and rested his feet against the bed in a studied nonchalance and then not a move or whisper since. It had really started to bug the Sheriff. By rights the guy should be kicking off given the stretch he was looking at now this long list of felonies had caught up with him but there was no damn reaction.
The sheriff had learnt a long time ago never to judge a book by its cover but this kid didn’t look like a killer or the hardened gun runner they had him down as, he still looked like the practised politician he had once been. The file had said he was capable of violence on a scale that bothered the Sheriff but as yet there had been no aggression whatsoever and he had not been carrying a weapon when he was pulled over. It wasn’t adding up and it was annoying the fuck out of him. Once again, the sheriff stared at the clock. With a grunt, he stood up and walked over to lean against the bars of the cell and look down on the prisoner.
“You want a drink ?”
“Please.”
The older man walked back toward the old water cooler in the corner, the familiar bubbling as it dripped water into the cup somehow comforting. The prisoner stood up now, watching with that infuriating half smile as the Sheriff handed him the cup through the bars.
“Thanks.”
“You’re welcome. You gonna talk to us now Gerard ?”
The sheriff watched as the young man paused and a smirk crossed the handsome features. He leant forward, one arm across the bars and rested his head against it as he looked at the lawman.
“Why ? You obviously know all you need to. Got the FBI coming all the way out to Fucksville Kansas to pick me up right ?”
“Just interested is all. You do it ?”
“No. I’m an innocent man. Hang around with a bad crowd.”
The sheriff noted the sarcasm in his tone and couldn’t help but smile.
“Sure you are. Lot of innocent men end up where you’re going.”
“Many a slip twixt cup and lip as they say Sheriff.”
He pushed himself off the bars and resumed his position on the floor. The sheriff walked back to the desk and picked up the file again. The feds had been amazed when it had been called in. Last reports had put Gerard and his buddies somewhere up near Canada and living it up, nothing on the horizon to say anything else. Quite what he was doing here, and alone, was a mystery.
It was a reasonably thick file, listing the exploits of a man who had belonged to the most powerful crime family in the country until he had vanished a year before. . Nothing stuck to them, it was all circumstantial but they had never even managed to get Frank Iero or any of his family up on anything that would stick. The sheriff allowed himself a moment of pride and ignored the quirk of fate that had resulted in the traffic stop in the first place.
Again he stared at the clock before looking again at the little pile of belongings that they had taken from the prisoner. A smart mobile phone, set of various keys, about forty dollars and a crumpled piece of paper bearing a nine digit number. What it meant was a mystery and Gerard had been as uncommunicative as was possible. He had obviously not been expecting to be picked up and recognised.
The door opened and both the Sheriff and his deputy looked up in surprise as a young woman walked in, as out of place as their prisoner. She removed her dark glasses and fixed the Sheriff with a dazzling smile.
“Can I help you ?”
“Sure can sugar, you have something of mine.”
There was a low chuckle from the cell as Gerard turned around. Their eyes locked, fire passing between them. He knew his luck had just changed. He stood up and leant against the bars again. She went to walk toward him but the Sheriff put himself in front of her.
“I don’t think so. That’s one dangerous man. You are ?”
“Angel. He ain’t all that dangerous I promise.”
The other man didn’t move. Angel could see Gerard was smiling now and flicked his eyes toward the other deputy who was staring at her. She pulled herself up giving both the lawmen a full view of her breasts only being held in by a tight halter top that barely skimmed her belly button. Tight jeans gave them a hint of other pleasures. She pouted at them.
“C’mon boys be nice. You can see I’m not carrying anything. I just want to talk to my honey.”
Reluctantly the Sheriff moved aside and Angel walked over to the cell, her eyes fixed back on his. She ran one hand down the bars, her fingers meeting his and intertwining. His thumb moved along her finger, the gesture tiny but full of tension.
“Hi darlin’, sorry I didn’t make it.”
“I knew you were in trouble Gee, you never stand me up.”
Looking over her shoulder, he smiled at the Sheriff before reaching through the bars, one hand gently trailing from her throat to the edge of her shirt, undoing the top button.
“Hey that’s enough. Keep your hands to yourself.”
Gee smirked, raising his hands in mock surrender before returning his gaze to his girl.
“You call the lawyer ?”
“Course. Chances are Frank is gonna hear too.”
“Nothings gonna stick babe, have my hands on that cute ass before they get here.”
The sheriff allowed himself a sly smile. He knew the feds had no intention of letting this one get away. The smile faded as Angel put one hand through the bars to take a handful of Gerard’s hair and pull his face to hers. The kiss was long and deep before she felt a hand on her shoulder.
“I said no touching.”
She smiled at the man, letting go of Gerard but only to trail her fingers down his cheekbone before stepping back. She let the same hand run down to re-do the button of her top, seeing the Sheriff follow the motion. Angel turned, resting her back against the bars to look at the two cops. Gerard could feel the heat starting to rise in his groin as he ran his fingers down her back, the ripple of pleasure passing through her causing a shiver of delight.
“You better be treating him right, Gee’s a real important businessman y’know. He doesn’t talk with his old associates anymore.”
His lips were now on the back of her neck and she felt his chuckle as the Sheriff just shook his head.
“If that’s what you want to call it missy.”
“I promise Sheriff, he wouldn’t hurt a fly.”
Angel struggled to keep a straight face as Gerard nipped the back of her neck. They both knew that was an outright lie in business as well as pleasure but this lawmen was obviously too straight laced to understand how pleasure could so easily derive from pain.
“We’ll let the feds decide on that. Now, visiting time is over.”
Angel sighed and walked back toward the Sheriff. Gee watched her, the hunger almost too much to bear. His head was buzzing as he lent it against the cool steel bars. He wanted out and wanted out now. This thing with the feds was going to take too damn long. Dark thoughts began to swirl in his head. He knew it would only take the right words and his girl would have him out within minutes. However, that would mean doing something both unspeakable and stupid.
Mikey and Frank were on their way, his fucking overpaid dick of a lawyer too. This could be done the legal way, the sensible way and they could leave before the past caught up with them. The boring way. A smile started to lift his features.
“Thank you Sheriff, I’ll wait outside for the lawyer.”
She turned back, blowing a kiss to her lover.
“Soon baby boy.”
Angel watched his face, recognising the look in his eyes. A flush started to build, adrenaline kicking in as she searched his face for its meaning. Gee had spent so long curbing the bad impulses, letting Mikey and the others talk him into staying out of the limelight and trouble. She knew he wanted to handle his own business, that almost sexual buzz of exerting a kind of power that few people could dream off.
Gerard made his decision, the iron will hidden behind the soft words that he breathed to her.
“Tempo di andare bambino, li finire.”
She smiled, this was how it was supposed to be between them.
“Qualsiasi cosa per te.”
The sheriff had no time to react, Angel was faster than either of the lawmen would ever have suspected, a quality that had saved her life more times than any weapon. He flailed at the tight grip around his throat, his own pistol jammed tightly up under his chin. Angel stared down the deputy, the grey sick look on his face telling her that the kid had never raised that gun in anger.
“Don’t be a hero moron, one wrong move and I will blow his brains out. Go unlock the door.”
For a moment there was a pause, Gerard and Angel both watching the deputy hesitate. This was not what he had signed on for, the worst that he normally had to deal with was a few rowdy drunks on a Friday night. Not dangerous criminals and certainly not seeing his boss mewling like a frightened child. Scared though he was, Morris lifted his chin and raised the firearm, hoping it wasn’t shaking too much. Angel adjusted, keeping the fat sheriff between her and the firing line. All that would happen was that the bullet would hit the other man first.
The sheriff knew it too and started to struggle.
“Drop it, I will shoot.”
Angel growled as the gun swung toward Gerard, now the guy was just pissing her off. Gerard caught her eye, not scared in the slightest but now painfully aroused. He wanted her when things kicked off, their shared love of violence was what had started things between them. The lust had turned to something more but had never completely disappeared. He chuckled as the deputy’s head exploded, her bullet catching him square between the eyes and spraying blood and brain matter over the wall. The sheriff’s screams descended into moans as the now hot barrel was thrust back into his flesh.
“Your bitch wasn’t fast enough. Now unlock the door before you join him in hell.”
The man fumbled for his keys, Angel pushing him forward and never letting the gun slip. She watched Gerard, seeing the near madness that she adored in him coming to the surface was something she had missed. There would be more chaos and blood before this day was out and to hell with the consequences. They were running from so many people now that adding the law in would hardly change anything.
Gerard stepped through the cell door, punching the sheriff square in the face and feeling the fat man’s nose splinter as he hit the floor.
“Now then. We can talk properly.”
The wheezing groans got louder as Gerard viciously kicked the sheriff in the gut before pulling Angel into his arms. He removed the pistol from her hand, tucking it into the pocket of his jacket as her hands worked into his hair, their lips meeting hungrily. One hand found her ass, pulling her tight against his groin, the other pulling her hair. The sheriff continued to be blinded by tears, wasting valuable seconds while they were lost in each other. He had no idea of what he had become caught up in and the chain of events that it would let spiral out on control.
