Days Gone By

I Ain't A Judas

Gerard stormed over to him. Mikey quickly put his hands up, his eyes growing wide with fear; suddenly afraid of the man before him. “Look man I....” He was quickly cut of as Gerard lashed out punching him in the face. Mikey fell to the floor, a hand on his burning cheek as he looked up at his brother. Lindsey quickly rushed beside him, tugging at his arm as he prepared to take another swing at him. “Gee stop it!” She cried, pulling him away. Gerard shook her off, walking away from the camp and its members who were staring in silence. “Gerard please...” She pleaded, grabbing his hand as she followed him; Tears welling in her eyes as she tried to pull him back, to explain everything that had happened. He snatched it away, turning round and locking eyes with her; beckoning at her with a shaking hand. “NO! Don’t you dare!” He screamed, watching her quiver in silence before storming off into the woods.

*****
Gerard sat on a tree stump, his head in his hands as tears trailed down his face. The air around him was warm, gently rustling the tree’s as the sunlight began to shine down through the tree tops. If it was any other day, in any other world, it would have been a beautiful day.

“Ain’t no point crying over what you can’t fix” a voice said. Gerard sighed, looking up. He wiped his eyes, lips splitting into a crooked smile as he saw Frank leaning against a nearby tree. Frank grinned, flicking away the butt of the cigarette in his hand before slowly making his way over to Gerard. “Girl’s like that aren’t worth it, believe me, I’ve had my fair share” Frank said coldly, sitting beside him. He glanced over at the man next to him; his heart skipping a beat. He was an enigma; intriguing. He had never found himself so fascinated by someone before. His charming appearance yet dark and distant personality excited him; awakening something inside him. His heart fluttered as his cheeks began to blush a pale red. He quickly turned his head away; almost ashamed at himself for acting like this. “How could she do that to me? I thought she loved me?” He moaned, his bottom lip trembling as he wrapped his arms around his waist; not wanting Frank to see him cry again.

Frank shrugged, attempting to light another cigarette before throw the lighter over his shoulder, cursing under his breath. He looked defeated, running his fingers through his hair and staring up at the sky as if praying for a miracle. “You need to stop doing this to yourself. This isn’t the world you used to live in. You shut up, drink up and numb up” He replied, gazing at him with sympathetic eyes. “I know," Gerard replied in barely more than a whisper, "But it hurts." Frank jumped to his feet, pulling Gerard to his feet as he grabbed him by his arms; shaking him slightly. “Listen to me… You can and you will get over her,” he assured him urgently, “You don’t need that bitch to function.”

Gerard locked eyes with him. There was a moment; an unspoken emotion between them. Frank’s eyes moved down to his lips, longing for them. A thin smile crept upon his face as his grip on Gerard’s arms softened. Why did he care so much? He made a promise not to get emotionally involved with anyone again; He had given up on everyone else a long time ago.

“Gee?” A soft voice called out. The men turned their heads and found Lindsey standing a few feet away from them. Frank swiftly let go, clearing his throat as he nervously rubbed the back of his head. “I’ll umm... I’ll leave you two to it” He mumbled, patting Gerard on the back before he walked back to camp; a strange, unknown feeling tugging the back of his mind as he left.

He stood in the wilderness, his arms folded tightly against his chest as he refused to meet her eye. “Will you please listen to me” She begged an agitated tone in her voice as she walked closer to him. He scoffed at her, running a hand through his long black hair as he met her gaze. “What could you possibly say that could make this better” He sneered. Her eyes fell guiltily to the floor, tucking her hair behind her ears. “Mikey told me you were dead. He came home from the hospital one day and told me you were dead. I’m so sorry Gee...” He refused to listen, walking past her as he began to head back to the camp. “Gee! If I had known I never would have gotten with him!” She protested, struggling to keep up with him.
He laughed, stopping in his tracks as he turned back to face her. “So what was he doing? Keeping the bed sheets warm? Jesus Christ Lindsey he was my brother! How could you” He cried, a sad look of betrayal slowly forming on his face. “HE LIED TO ME!” She shouted, plunging them both into an uncomfortable silence. He was sick of the sight of her. What family did he have now?

She shifted uneasily. “He told me you had died and I couldn’t cope. I was a mess. He was supporting me and helping me get my life back on track. One thing led to another and... I’m so sorry babe” Lindsey said shakily, tears pricking in her eyes as she took hold of his hands. Gerard glanced back at the camp; his heart sank as she took him in her arms. “Can we move on from this? Please?” She whimpered, looking up at him with tear stained eyes. He closed his eyes, still unable to look at her as he slowly wrapped his arms around her; feelings of guilt filling his mind as he thought of Frank. He quickly shook away these thoughts; it was just a pipe dream, a stupid one off and nothing more. “Babe? I love you” She said quietly, moving his face to face hers. Gerard sighed; looking into her eyes struggled to rid himself of the unwanted guilt.

“I love you too” He muttered, allowing her to kiss him gently on the lips before she led him back to camp.

*****
Frank sat quietly on the roof of Billie’s truck, listening him drone on about the drama in the camp. He took another swig from the unmarked beer can, looking out absentmindedly across the field and onto the horizon. His mind kept wandering back to the moment in the forest, when he and Gerard were alone; silently cursing himself. He had made a promise many years ago not to get emotionally involved with anyone again and yet, back there in the forest, it was as though this man was different. This stranger, so to speak, was bringing up feelings, old feelings he thought had died with his partner many years ago. It was frightening, almost worrying that someone could have that effect on him but at the same time; he almost enjoyed it. “Away with the fairies are we?” Billie asked, raising an eyebrow as Frank as he snapped back to reality. Frank grinned, shrugging him off as he took another sip of beer.

“You know, I don’t get the whole Lindsey and Mikey thing” Billie said, tossing an empty beer can over his shoulder. He fiddled with the gun in his lap, picking it up and occasionally aiming it out at the forest. “How d’ya mean?” Frank asked, glancing over at the man beside him, resting his drink on the black metallic roof of the car. “Well, for a start, Lindsey is seeing his ex’s brother. I mean come on man, you don’t fuck someone and then fuck their brother” He said matter-of-factly. Frank remained silent, sniffing as he went back to staring at the horizon; he didn’t feel like talking about her right now. He had always found something “off” about her. Billie laid his gun beside him, wiping his lips with the back of his hand as he cleared his throat. “Another thing is, their story don’t add up. They came into this camp telling us how she their friend and brother dead in hospital. Suddenly he arrives here and it’s Mikey who found him and it’s Mikey who lied to everyone about it.” Billie added, leaning back as he glanced over at Frank.

His snapped back towards him, his eyes growing wide with realization. “You don’t think she lied to them both do you?” Frank said, horrified. Billie shrugged, closing his eyes as the sun filtered down on his face. “I suppose anything’s possible” He said darkly as Frank watched Lindsey walk back hand in hand with Gerard; looking up and Frank and winking as they walked into the tent- closing it behind them.
