Days Gone By

Alone

They spent the night staring at the door. Frank stood in front of the group; his gun poised straight ahead, eyes sharply focused upon the walkers who were clawing at the door. Gerard stood behind him, ready to attack if anything came through that door; his heart pounding as fear coursed through his veins.

He didn’t want to die tonight.

An explosion tore through the neighbourhood, shaking the house as a bright light quickly shone through the windows; blinding the group as they tried to shield their eyes. Screams echoed from outside as the walkers began to move away from the door, shuffling towards the noise. Gerard went for the door, grabbing hold of the handle as Frank quickly pulled him back. “What are you doing?” Frank whispered, forcing Gerard to look at him. He could sense the panic in Frank’s voice as he struggled to keep control of the situation. “We can’t just leave them” Gerard hissed, struggling to escape his grip. Frank quickly shook his head, staring into his eyes as he spoke. “There’s nothing we can do for them now” He said softly, feeling Gerard’s body grow still in his arms. He sighed, walking him into the living room and sat him down on the sofa. “Just... stay here and try not to do anything stupid” He added, winking at him as wandered back towards the front door, taking a seat on the stairs as watched it intently.

Gerard was still awake as morning finally came. The warm sun filtered through the windows as clouds hovered up in the clear blue skies. He remained sat on the sofa, a vacant look ghosted in his miss-matched eyes, as if he were somewhere far, far away.

"The place is really starting to shape up, isn't it babe?" she asked him, admiring their freshly decorated living room.

"Oh sure," he teased. "Fourteen more coats of paint and the housing authority might approve it!"

"Oh you're so funny, wise ass. I happen to think it looks very nice." She punched him playfully on the shoulder. "Very nice."

“Gerard!” Frank called, snapping his fingers in front of his face. He quickly snapped back to reality, rubbing his eyes to find Frank kneeling before him, a concerned look on growing on his face. “Are you ok?” He asked, placing a hand on his knee as he watched him closely, ignoring his heart which was beating faster in his chest. Gerard said nothing, his gazed fixed upon a picture that stood on the mantle above the fireplace; it was a picture of her.

Dan yawned, shifting out of Phil’s embrace as he woke up; a thin smile forming on his face. “Morning” He said gruffly as he dragged his hands down his face. He looked up and saw a worried looking Frank sat in front the stranger they had met yesterday. “What’s going on?” He asked suspiciously, standing up and placing his hands on his hips. Frank spun his head round, quickly standing to face him. For some reason, he felt guilty; as though he had done something awful. “Well?” Dan said, raising an eyebrow as he stared at Frank. Gerard sighed, bowing his head, he closed his eyes, and began to talk in a slow, faraway voice. "Nothing” He replied, startling the two men who quickly turned their heads to face him. He slowly stood up, walking out of the room and up the stairs.

“What’s wrong with that guy?” Dan said quietly, watching him leave the room. Frank sighed, grabbing his things and quickly stuffing them into a bag; he wasn’t in the mood for this. “Seriously Frank, do you really think it’s a good idea bringing him back with us? I mean we don’t even know him” Dan continued. Frank threw the bag on the floor, irritably turning round to face him. “And I didn’t know you two when we picked you up from Leytonstone. We’ve all got a past Dan; you don’t know what he’s been through or who he’s lost so give him a break will you?” Frank scolded, jabbing him in the chest. They stood there for a moment, staring at each other in silence before Frank went back to gathering up supplies.

Dan rolled his eyes, folding his arms. “You should go easy on him” A timid voice said from behind him. Dan turned and saw Phil’s tired blue eyes looking up at him from the floor, nervously running his hand through his black fringe. “We don’t even know him Phil! He could have fucking killed up last night” He protested, beckoning at the door as he spoke. Phil rose to his feet, gently taking hold of his friend’s arms. “But he didn’t, he had just woken up yesterday he didn’t have a clue.” Dan scoffed, shaking him off as he began to storm off out of the room. Phil squeezed his eyes shut, memories of that day dragged through his mind as he desperately tried to shut them out. If only they weren’t so naive then, if only they had listened. “Dan?” Phil called out, stopping Dan in the doorway, watching him glance back over his shoulder. “We lost people too” He said shakily. Dan sighed, tears welling in his eyes as he continued to walk out of the room. Phil lowered his head, wiping the tears away from his eyes as he quietly mourned alone.

“You sure it’s ok if I come with you?” Gerard asked, throwing a bag in the boot of the car. Frank smiled, shutting the boot as they walked over to the front of the car. “You wouldn’t last 5 minutes on your own” He replied, getting inside the driver’s side of the old land rover. Gerard sat in the passenger’s side, putting his seatbelt on as they quickly drove away from the neighbourhood. He stared out of the window, passing quiet streets lined with nondescript houses, abandoned cars by the dozen on busy roads, corpses lying dead in the street, walkers dragging their rotting remains around the town he once called home.

He glanced over to Frank whose eyes were fixed upon the road ahead, his hand gripped tightly around the steering wheel. “How long till we’re there?” Phil asked, his knees pulled into his chest. “About 20 minutes” Frank replied, checking the review mirror as he put his foot down, passing a sign which read “Welcome to Takely”. Gerard smiled to himself, he knew of this place. His father always used to joke about how the people lived there had six fingers and toes because they married their cousins. He shook his head, laughing quietly to himself. He began to wonder if his father was still alive out there somewhere, his parents were still on holiday when he was in a coma; maybe they managed to escape all this. “What’s funny?” Frank asked, turning his head to face him. Gerard smiled, opening his mouth to speak when a little girl, no more than six, walked out in front of the car. “FRANK!” He screamed. Frank saw the girl and quickly swerved, losing control of the car.

The car turned off the road, smashing into a tree. Gerard lunged forward, his seatbelt cutting into his skin as he was quickly yanked back into his seat. There was a loud hiss as smoke began to rise from the engine. Gerard rubbed the back of his head as he looked beside him; Frank was lying unconscious across the steering wheel, blood flowing from a large cut on his head. “Frank?” He said, his voiced filled worry as he shook him, noticing a large crack on the windshield from where he had hit the window.

He checked the back of the car; Phil’s arm was hanging in a horrific angle, blood pouring from his ear as Dan’s head rested against the window, glass cutting into face and arm. “Guys?” He whimpered. The car was silent. He tried to open the car door but found it to be stuck, his tried to shove it open, tears of panic streaming down his face as he found himself trapped within the wreckage of the car. “HELP” He screamed without thinking as he shook them, desperately trying to wake them up. A rustling sound suddenly came from the bushes. Gerard froze, his eyes darting around the surrounding woods as he tried to see who was out there. “Hello?” He called out, his voice cracking up as he spoke.

In that moment, walkers began to walk out of the bushes and towards the car. Gerard stared in horror as around twelve of them slowly staggered towards the car, blood dripping from their snarling faces as they walked. He struggled in his seat, frantically trying to escape from the car. It was useless. He sat back in his seat, closing his eyes while the walkers moved closer. The moans growing louder as they surrounded the car.
