Days Gone By

Indifference

Jenny threw her sleeping bag onto the back of Billie’s truck, watching Lindsey cautiously out of the corner of her eye as she kissed Gerard hard on the lips. She scowled; gritting her teeth as she angrily threw her backpack onto the back of the truck; hitting Billie hard in the chest. “Jesus, calm down” Billie moaned dropping the bag to the floor as he flashed her an agitated look. She sighed, tearing her eyes away from the couple and stared up at Billie. “Sorry” She replied sympathetically, glancing back over at Lindsey, watching her as she slinked her arm around her boyfriend’s waist. Jenny clenched her fists; god she hated that woman. She had heard every word she said last night to Frank and it made her feel sick to the stomach. How could Frank stand there and let her speak to him like that? More importantly, how could she treat people like that and get away with it?

She had had enough.

She stormed off, walking past the camp members as they began to pack up their belongings as she walked over to Lindsey. “Jen?” Levi called out, concern rising in his voice. She ignored him, her eyes focused sharply on the woman in front of her. She wasn’t taking her shit anymore and she certainly wasn’t going to let her upset her friends. “Lindsey” She called out, her voice cold and emotionless as a startled Lindsey quickly turned her head to face her. “A word, now” She ordered, folding her arms loosely against her stomach as she began to walk off.

The women walked into the middle of the forest, the cold air surrounding them like a cage, sending goose bumps along their skin as it gently rustled the trees. “Ok seriously Jen what do you want?” Lindsey spat, stopping abruptly in the centre of a clearing. Jenny turned to face her, standing with her hands on her hips as she stared menacingly at the woman before her.

“I want you to stop acting like a nasty little cow and start treating people with some respect” Jenny replied matter-of-factly. Lindsey stood there, stunned into silence as a look of horror spreading across her face. “I don’t know what you mean” She said innocently, placing her hand gently on her chest as she took a step closer to her; a malicious look in her eyes. She scoffed at her, running a hand through her hair. “Do I look like an idiot? I heard you talking to Frank last night. Who the fuck do you think you are treating people like that?” Jenny cried as Lindsey edged closer to her.

Lindsey moved closer, her face now inches away from hers. A wide grin quickly spreading across her lips as she broke into laughter. “You silly girl, you really don’t have a clue do you?” She sneered, gently brushing a strand of hair out of Jenny’s face. Jenny smacked her hand away, struggling to suppress her anger. She slowly stepped away from her as her wicked smile grew; never in her life had she ever hated a woman so much. “You know what maybe I don’t... but you know how close Gerard and Frank have been recently, I’m sure he would be very interested to hear what you’ve been saying behind his back” She jeered, flashing her a wicked smile as she began to walk away; a sense of pride swiftly washing over her.

Suddenly Lindsey grabbed her arm, twisted it as she yanked her back. Jenny cried out as a searing pain shot up her arm. She pulled her close, staring threateningly into her eyes as she struggled in her grip, whimpering in pain. “Listen here you little bitch, keep your fucking mouth shut or I swear to god I’ll kill you. Do I make myself clear?” She scorned, her eyes fixed on Jenny as she tried to pull away. “Get off me, Lindsey please your hurting my arm” She cried, tears welling in her eyes as Lindsey dug her nails into her skin, twisting her arm harder as Jenny screamed out in pain.

“Oi!” A voice screamed. Lindsey quickly let go, turning around to find Billie standing behind them, a black revolver in his hand as he pointed it at her. She held her hands up, her face changing into a look of hurt as tears began to well in her eyes. “Oh Billie thank god your here...” She started her voice choked as she began to cry.

Billie shook his head, still aiming the gun at her. “Don’t gimme your shit Lindsey; I saw what you did to her. You touch her again and I swear to god I’ll put you down understand?” Billie growled. Lindsey swallowed hard, nodded as she quickly ran from them, cursing under her breath as she swore to get back at them for this.

She wouldn’t lose him. Not like this.

Billie lowered the gun, stuffing it into his belt as he rushed over to her, wrapping her in his arms. “Are you ok?” He asked softly. She pulled away, his hands remaining on her arms as he tried to catch her eye. She kept her head to the floor, a dull ache in her arm. “Yes” She replied quietly. Billie sighed, kissing her on the forehead as he wiped away the tears from her eyes. “Don’t worry about her, I’ll take care of you” He said quietly, his voice softer, kinder than usual. She looked into his deep brown eyes, smiling up at him as she slipped away, stumbling through the woods as she walked back to camp.

He watched her leave, rubbing the back of his head as he sighed quietly to himself; she looked so much like Mila. He should have done more that day; she should have saved her when he had the chance. He cleared his throat, blocking out the memories of his wife as he followed Jenny back to camp.
