Days Gone By

Frank stared at Gerard, his eyes growing wide with fear as the two men held him by his arms to the ground. “Get off me!” He cried, struggling in their grip. A gruff laugh came from behind him, shoving the barrel of the gun harder into Frank’s head. “I wouldn’t if I were you” The voice sneered, forcing Frank to remain on the floor as large, hooded man came forward, grinning as his venomous eyes looked up and down Gerard body. “Just take what you want and leave” Frank said, sternly, trying to remain calm as he watched one of the men twist Gerard’s arm, making him cry out in pain.

A hand suddenly grabbed his hair, yanking him up to face the old, sunken eyes of a grey-haired man; his moth eaten jacket giving off a horrific stench as he held him close; the barrel of the gun digging into his head. “You see boy, out here in the wilderness; there are no women to please us. They’ve all been taken by the dead folk... so now, we take it wherever we can find it” He purred softly into Frank’s ear. Frank struggled in his grip, wincing in pain as he tugged harder on his hair. The hooded man turned, flashing him a frightening smile as he spoke “Don’t worry, it’ll be your turn next” he said coldly, turning back and nodding at the two men holding Gerard down.

Gerard began to panic, kicking out wildly at the hooded man who was trying to force his legs apart. “No! Please, don’t Frank... Frank help me!”He cried, kicking out a hitting the man in the jaw, knocking him back. The man howled in pain, blood trickling from his lip as he stared up at the grey haired man who sighed impatiently at the sight of him. “Daryl cover his mouth” The man instructed, tightening his grip on Frank, who’s face had twisted into a look of horror as the man holding onto Gerard placed his gun down on the floor, laughing at he covered his friend’s screaming mouth.

“Let him go” Frank begged, unable to take his eyes off Gerard as the hooded man began to unzip his trousers. “Ooh we’ve got a squirmer” The hooded man giggled, forcing apart his legs and hooking his fingers around Gerard’s jeans; beginning to pull them down. “I said let him go” Frank sneered, tears welling in his eyes as caught sight of Gerard’s tear stained and pleading face.

Frank’s head quickly jolted back, slamming the grey haired man hard in the chest and knocked him back. The grey haired man staggered back, struggling to catch his breath as the gun went off; a loud ringing echoing in Frank’s ears as a sharp pain began to pulsate through his head. The three men fell quiet, silenced by the gun shots as their heads turned to look at Frank and the grey haired man who stood clutching their ears in agony. He quickly shook his head, trying to pull himself together and block out the pain as he kicked the man straight in the balls. The man fell to the floor, whimpering in pain as Frank kicked him over and over again until he was nothing but a bloody pulp, lying still upon the floor.

The hooded man swiftly rose to his feet, punching Frank in the face and knocking him to the floor. The world was spinning; his head felt hazy as he saw the grinning man prepare to take another swing for him. Frank eyed the gun in the grey haired mans hands, snatching it from his cold, dead fingers and shot out at the man. The bullet tore through the man’s stomach, blood flooding through his shirt and onto the pavement as he screamed out in agony. He rose to his feet, his hand shaking as he aimed the gun at one of the men holding Gerard’s arm; shooting him in the head. The other man known as Daryl dropped Gerard’s arm, holding his hands up as fear flickered in his eyes. “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry” the man cried, scrambling to his feet as he ran from the scene, terror coursing through his veins as he refused to look back.

Frank stared at Daryl for a moment, watching him run out of sight before tossing the gun aside, sinking to his knees. Gerard crawled over to Frank, a look of terror and relief in his eyes as he threw his arms around him, burying his head into his neck. His heart was pounding, tears trailing down his cheeks. His body shaking with fear as he felt Frank’s arms quickly wrap around him; holding him tight, not ever wanting to let go. He held him outward, cupping Gerard’s face in his hands as look of worry pained across his face. “Are you ok? Did they hurt you” Frank asked, his voice filled with dread ashe pushed a lock of hair out of Gerard’s eyes; refusing to take his eyes off him. Gerard nodded, almost unable to speak. His lips trembled as he broke down into loud sobs. Frank pulled him close, fighting back the tears as a heavy weight of guilt suddenly rested in his chest. “I’m so sorry. Jesus Christ I am so, so sorry” He whispered, stroking his hair as he stared up at the beautiful blue sky.

“Thank you”

Frank glanced over at Gerard whose eyes remained focused on the floor. None of them had spoken since the attack. They were walking back from the town, cans of food clattering around inside their bags as the afternoon breeze gently blew past them. The heavy weight of guilt still plagued his mind as he struggled to rid himself with the thought that it was all his fault. “What for?” He mumbled. Gerard raised his head, smiling softly at Frank. “For saving me” He replied.

Frank sighed, stopping them in the middle of the road. “Gerard...” He began, struggling to look at him. “Stop it, ok I was being a bit of arse hole and I’m sorry. It’s just... it was a shock and I shouldn’t have taken it out on you” he said interrupting him before he could blame himself anymore than was he already was. He placed his hands on his arms, trying to catch his eye. Frank slowly raised his head; a thin smile crept onto his face.

“Everything I’ve done since we met was to protect you” Frank replied quietly, looking into his dark brown eyes. He was so sweet, so sweet and yet vulnerable. He cleared his throat, after seeing him go through that today, he didn’t want to keep him in the dark anymore. They both could have died today; he needed to know how he felt before it was too late.

“I never wanted to kill Dan, but someone had to, he would have come back as one of them and tore you to pieces. When those guys were... you know... I hated not being able to do anything, I hated not being able to protect you and stop them doing that to you” He added, his voice near hysterical as his heart began to pound in his chest. Gerard lowered his hands to his side, tilting his head to the side slightly as furrowed his eyebrows. “Why do you care so much?” He asked, confused. He knew Frank wasn’t one for emotional things, why was he being like this.

“Because I don’t want to lose you Gee” Frank said

He suppressed the urge to smile, pressing his lips firmly together as he cheeked burned a bright red. Maybe it wasn’t just him. Maybe Frank really did have feelings for him. “Really?” He said shakily, his voice growing into a childish giggle he was struggling to shake off. Frank nodded, a large grin forming on both their faces as they found themselves unable to take their eyes each other. Gerard ran a hand through his hair, giggling to himself; he hadn’t acted like this since he was 14. “Since the day I first laid eyes on you, I.... well I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you” Frank confessed, shrugging.

Gerard took hold of Frank’s hands, biting his lip as he nervously looked down at the ground. Excitement built up in his chest; he had never felt this way before. “Then don’t think” He replied, his eyes looking back up at Frank as he leant in,closing his eyes as he gently pressed his lips against Frank’s. Frank moved closer, taking Gerard in his arms as he kissed him back. For the first time, in a very long time, an overwhelming sense of happiness washed over him. His heart skipped a beat as he looked up into the eyes of the man before him; those sweet, innocent eyes. Their problems seemed to slip away, nothing mattered anymore except him. In a world filled with monsters and little hope, perhaps now they had finally found happiness.

Frank pulled away, staring at Gerard with shock for a moment before the pair broke into a girlish giggle. Gerard rested his forehead against Frank’s as he cupped his face with his hands; a warm smile spreading across his face as he kissed him tenderly on the lips.
