I'm Okay Now
Chapter Forty Eight
The first thing I saw when I opened my eyes was Katy sleeping, and I smiled to myself thinking about last night. I rubbed my eyes a little bit to get used to the bright morning sunlight that was shining threw my windows. I reached for my phone that was lying on the black nightstand next to my bed, and checked the time.
9:30. Kate probably won't be up for at least another hour, so I slowly got my tired self out of bed and dressed in black skinnys and a fall out boy tee before making my way downstairs. I tried to do my best not to be so loud and wake everyone up but our stairs are too creaky to even bother. I made my way into the kitchen that's hasn't changed it boring white and blue color in fifteen years. I should reprint it soon, it was starting to look old and it didn't fit with the modern look the rest of the house had. I began brewing some coffee and started working on making scrambled eggs for everyone so they wouldn't have to wait for breakfast when they woke up. I remember it like it was just yesterday when mom and dad would make me and mikes eggs every weekend morning. Of course that was before the divorce and all hell broke loose. One second their madly in love and the next they're throwing dishes at each other screaming bad words. And poor Mikey. My parents didn't know he was upstairs and he could hear all the yelling and words. I took him out to go get ice cream so he wouldn't have to hear anymore of the yelling and he would forget it ever happened. However He doesn't let things slide. Little 9 year old Mikey had no idea what was going on and wouldn't stop pelting questions at me such as "what's going on?" "Why are mom and dad using bad words?" I had no Idea how to respond to him, partially because I also had no idea why this was happening, and also, how do you explain that your parents that once promised to love each other forever broke that promise? Once when he was old enough I told him what was happening and the look in his eyes scared me forever. He took it as if I told his that one of them died. Well we still don't know that. After the huge fight dad left and did who knows what, but all I know is I never saw him again. And for my mom? When I was around 20 she got this huge promotion out in Montana. The last thing me and Mikey wanted to do was leave New Jersey so I assured her that I would watch over Mikey. I still see her about twice a year and usually around once a week I get a phone call from her asking if anything in new or what's changed. And once a month she sends me a check to help pay for food and other shit like that. I still wonder about my dad a lot. What does he look like? Has he changed at all? Were is he? Is he happy? Is he still living? But most of all, what caused the divorce? I was too caught up in my thoughts to even notice that Mikey was standing in the doorway.
"Thinking about mom and dad again?" He asked. I noticed I was crying.
"Uh- y-yea yea" I said bringing myself back into the present moment. "How did you know?"
"Scrambled eggs remind me of them too" Mikey was way too young when it all happened. I wish they could have waited until he was older or at least make sure he wasn't in the house when they decided to throw plates at each others faces. But then again if everything went the way we wanted they would still be the happy married couple I thought they where. I wiped off the remaining tears that lingered on my check and continued scrambling the eggs.
"Hey Gerard!" Alicia cheered as she entered the kitchen and took the seat at the glass table next to Mikey. "What's for breakfast?" She asked.
"Eggs with toast served with coffee" I responded as if I was a waiter. When I turned my gaze back to the eggs, Mikey and Alicia started uncontrollable laughing.
"What's so funny?"
"Well-" Alicia started but was too busy laughing to finish her sentence.
