Keep Me Safe from Myself

Why did I think it would be any different?

"Shit! No, wait up!" I yelled to nobody. The bus just kept moving farther and farther out of sight. I slowed down, admitting defeat. I popped open my Mountain Dew and took a swig. Why not? I was going to be late anyways. I tucked my hair behind my ear and started trekking on.

Two miles. The school is two miles away. Doesn't seem that bad, until you have to walk it at six in the morning. I was about halfway there when I stopped to switch the song, and noticed a black car driving really slow, creeping towards me. I turned around and tried to see who was driving. I spotted some blonde hair, but that was it. I started to walk a little faster, hoping they would just go away, when it pulled up beside me. I stopped, ready to defend myself, when the window rolled down and revealed a kid who couldn't have been any older than me. He had blonde hair, and cute little glasses that looked like mine when I used to wear them.

"Hey, are you, uh, going to Belleville High?" He asked, and tried to smile, before breaking out into a coughing fit. I started to quietly laugh, before walking up to the car window. I waited a couple seconds. Damn, he was really going at it

"Are you okay?" I questioned, growing concerned.

He struggled to speak. "No, no I'm fine I-" He broke out into another coughing fit. "Look at me- choking on my own saliva." He cleared his throat a few times, and I started to laugh again.

"Well fine." He said sarcastically. "I think I'll just go then-"

"No wait! I'm sorry" I half laughed, half pleaded. "Yea, I'm trying to get there. I missed the bus this morning."

"Isn't that the number one rule for the first day of school, to not miss the bus? Here, get in and I'll give you a ride."
I got in the car and quickly thanked him.

Turns out, he was in the same grade as me. His name was Mikey and when we arrived, he walked me to guidance so I could get my schedule. I was about to ask him where I was going, when a blonde girl came up to him and started a full blown make-out session with him. I started to laugh when she broke off the kiss and shot daggers at me. If looks could kill.
"Who's she?" The blonde spoke. Her voice was high pitched, a tone that felt like I was being stabbed in the ears. You'd think that after having Fall Out Boy and Blink-182 blaring in my ears, I'd be prepared for anything. Apparently not.

"Babe, this is Hannah. She's new here, so I showed her where to get her schedule and stuff. I saw her walking on the way to school so I gave her a ride" Mikey explained, giving her a quick peck on the cheek. She started to examine me- from my hair, to my shirt, even the doodles on my wrist.
She whispered something in his ear that I couldn't catch, but he rolled his eyes to her comment and shrugged. "So? She's cool, we even like the same food" He chuckled, pointing to my necklace.
I looked down at my schedule and Mikey took it from me. "Sweet, look, we even have classes together. Come on, I'll show you to your first class. Jenna, you have English too, right?" Jenna, I thought. Fitting, yet slightly stereotypical. I followed him and his girlfriend to my first class. I noticed she latched on to him like a leach. I celebrated internally, finally happy that someone was jealous of me for once.

I sat down in the back like I usually do, and pulled out my sharpie. I really need to get a new one, I thought. I'm running out of ink. Tracing over the fading marker, I noticed out of the corner of my eye a familiar blonde head of hair walking my way. I looked up and put the cap on my sharpie, just in case. I've had too many incidents with smeared sharpie because of being pushed and shoved. I realized within a second she was not walking over for a friendly hello. She knocked my Mountain Dew off the table and shoved me out of my chair. I could see the rage in here eyes, they no longer were the bright blue they were before. I didn't pay any attention to her, I just scurried over and grabbed my can of happiness that was now all over the floor. She kicked me and grabbed my hair, forcing me to stand. She put her face up to my ear; "Listen here and listen good you little s-"

That "S" was all it took. I can't stand it when people talk straight into my ear. Really don't understand how people think it's a turn-on. I freaked and elbowed her stomach and put my finger to that special pressure-point that my father had taught me to use in case I ever needed it. Well at least it worked, I thought as she fell straight to the floor. I put my foot on her chest and leaned in;

"I don't know what your problem is, but if you ever talk that close to my ear again, I'll make sure you lose yours." I growled. I took what was left in my soda can and poured it in her hair. What a waste of perfectly good caffeine, I thought.
I heard heel tapping and looked up, seeing who I guessed was our English teacher.

"You must be Hannah" she hissed between teeth.

"Just write me my detention and I'll go, but keep her away from me." I sat back down in my seat, waiting for whatever punishment they were going to give me. I pulled out my earbuds when I heard a small voice.

"Mrs. Spears, wait. It wasn't just Hannah. Jenna pushed her on the floor and started to hurt her like she does to everyone. If anything, Hannah was defending herself."
I looked over, and saw another girl. She looked at me and smiled.

"You fucking snitch." Another voice added,

"Hannah is the first person to ever stand up to Jenna and not put up with her shit, and I'm not letting her get in trouble as if Hannah lashed out for no reason." She screamed back. Wait, so this has happened before?

Mrs. Spears looked shocked. "In that case- Hannah, Jenna, and Casey, you can all go to the office. I'll let them know you're on your way." She picked up the phone and dialed a few numbers before shooing us out the door.

I waited for Casey and we walked together. I thanked her for sticking up for me.
"It's no problem, but you don't have to pretend to be my friend. You can just go back to not knowing me, just like everyone does." I stopped real quick, then caught back up with her.

"I'm not pretending anything- and besides I don't know where the office is." We both shared a laugh and continued on, forgetting all about Jenna.

Notes

Well damn! How do u think Mikey should react? I'll probably update one more time today and then wait for reactions and contemplate if I should continue the story or not.
