Would You Carry Me To The End?

On The Edge

Frank's POV

"I'll be back in ten minutes." I say, looking over at Mikey and Gee. "I'm just gonna go collect some water. We're running low."
"You sure you're gonna be ok?" says Mikey, looking over at me with a concerned expression.
"Yes." I say, packing several canteens into my bag, zipping it all up as tightly as possible.
"You'll make sure to check every one you kill before you kill it?"
"YES."
"Ten minutes, right?"
"Yes!"
"And you'll make sure to check the stream isn't contaminated?"
"YES!" I say, irritated. I know he's just worried for his best friend, but I know what I'm doing.
"Ok." he says, holding his hands up in defence. "Sorry, man. It's just you don't know how many could be waiting patiently for a new victim. They're smarter than they look."
I know exactly what he's talking about. There are packs of zombies scattered everywhere around here. But never more than 5 or 6. The small groups are easy enough to handle.
"Yeah, they are, Mikey. I'll bring a gun just in case, ok?" I say, holding up a 32 calibre pistol, loading it.
"Fine." he says. I give him a quick wave before walking out the door and heading west.
If I remember correctly, there's a clean stream about 3 minutes away. I continue walking down the path and just like I remembered, there's a nice stream. I check for any slicks floating near the surface. I've seen them before. It's the infection from the zombies. They try to contaminate the water sources, so that we turn to one of them. Equivalent to a bite. They do it to complete the one objective they have. To make all of us like them. But luckily, there's still a few of us left.
There aren't any slicks. It's clean.
I take out the canteens and fill them, one by one, before securing the caps back on, placing them back in my bag. Day by day routine. Nothing changes. Hardly any action. But then I hear a rustling in the woods.
I stand up, walking in to the woods, trying to crunch the dead leaves I step on as quietly as possible. But then I see it. I'm guessing it's a fresh one. Pale, thin, messy hair. It's holding a syringe, pushing the liquid in to a beaker and sealing it with a cork.
Course. New infection it's making. Obviously not used to it, as it doesn't catch my scent. I go over to her as silently as possible. As she puts her supplies back into a box and closes it up, I watch her put it back in her bag and close it, standing up as she slings it over her shoulder. And that's when I make my move.
I wrap my arm around it's neck, pulling it close to me. It screams, but I place my hand over it's mouth, muffling the noise. Then it tries to break away from my grasp, but I keep a strong grip on her neck, locking it tightly. It struggles for breath, and I place my gun to it's head. But then I hear Mikey's voice in my mind.
'You'll make sure to check every one before you kill it?' I roughly turn it's head to check it's eyes. It's a hard to tell a fresh one from a human, but their eyes are a dead giveaway. they're faded, and lifeless. Always. But as soon as I turn it's head it shuts it's eyes. Like a protest.
"Let me see your eyes." I say. "COME ON!" But she keeps them shut.
"I'll kill you. I will kill you right now without blinking an eye."
"Go ahead, do it." it says. "I'd rather die than be one of you." And then she does it. It kicks me hard, where no man should ever be kicked, and when I'm winded, twists my wrist, causing me to drop my gun.
I shout out in pain, and she starts running, straight forward. It's a dead end. All that's there is the edge of a cliff. I run after it, and before I know it, I see her stop at the edge. I can see her face thinking hard, and then she does it. Suicide jump. But before I can even smirk, it grasps a hold on the side of the cliff., I can see the blood coming from the cuts the jagged rocks made. Ok, so, blood. All fresh ones have it. Guess she wasn't as willing to die as she said she was before. But then it looks up at me, desperation in her expression. Her eyes are a bright green. Completely human...

Notes

I hope you guys enjoy it. Sorry if it was a little rushed or distant. Listening to Scott Pilgrim in the background and it was kinda distracting. Anyways, thanks for clicking, and like, rate or leave a comment if you want to see anymore chapters to come. Thanks. Happy reading ^_^
