What Happens Underground, Stays Underground
Chapter 1
Don't ask me how I got here, because I wouldn't know. My parents, if they were here, they wouldn't know either. No one knows why or how we're here. All I can say is that I'm not the only one.
There's a whole bunch of people living where I live, down in The Silver Tunnels. As usual, everyone's gathering supplies for new homes and telephones and tools. That seems to be all they do around here. Build and survive.
"Harry," I called to one of The Silver Tunnels residents. "Haven't you ever thought about what's beyond that ring we call a tunnel?"
Harry, my neighbor, gave a disgusted look. "Cobwebs." He continued adding screws to a new and improved innovation of a bicycle.
"The sky's the limit," I start, dreaming of what a sky may look like. Various rumors suggested it had a vibrant color, like green or blue. In the center of the sky, it is said to have something we've temporarily called a shaft. Recently, the name has been rendered to 'sun'.
"What sky?" He directed my attention to the ceiling of the tunnels.
I wander off, away from the crowd and lean against a barrel, glad to be away from those pessimists. I can't help but wonder if there's somebody on the other side, if that makes any sense. I sigh and stare at my image reflected on the surface of a nearby puddle.
Not that I like what I see. I notice round, hazel eyes and soft eyebrows partly concealed by my medium jet black hair. A pixie nose is followed, along with a thin smile.
Before it calls my utmost attention, I see a shadow by my reflection. I assume it's mine. Until it moves.
