This Is The Best Day Ever

Teenagers

I clamber into the passenger seat of our car and slam the door shut behind me. I lean my head back against the headrest and take deep breaths, preparing myself for what was about to happen. Mom started up the engine, and as soon as the car started moving, I felt nauseous. Everyone was going to be there, watching me, waiting. Ray, Mikey, Bob.They'd all gotten their timekeepers before me - lucky bastards. They have years to wait, they don't even have to think about it.

I'm probably just overreacting. Maybe it's nothing to worry about.

"Calm down, Frankie. You'll be fine - loosen up a bit." I hadn't realised I was so tense. My fists were clenched and my tooth was clamped down on my lip like a vice, drawing blood. Mom reached over and stroked my knuckles with the pad of her thumb in a soothing manner. It really did help.

"We're here, honey." The car had stopped in the town hall parking lot which, may I add, was full to the brim with guest's car's.

"I can't do this, Mom." I was on the verge of a panic attack.

"Just breathe, Mikey will be there, remember? You promised you'd do it for him."

I guess she had a point, I swore to Mikey that I'd do this for him. Taking a deep breath, I unbuckled my safety belt and climbed out of the car. A soft autumn breeze brushed past me, and I suddenly wished I'd brought a jacket. Oh well. We walked slowly towards the double doors and into reception. There was a young-ish blonde woman in charge if the desk. She smiled up at us as we walked in.

"Ah, you must Frank and Ms Iero! Everybody's inside that door waiting for you - you can go right in."

Mom smiled down at her in thanks, then led me forward towards the small oak door that lead to the hall. I could hear excited chatter coming from inside. I shared one last smile with Mom before I gently pushed open the door. The room went silent, and all eyes were on me.

I froze. Mom seemed to noticed, and began pushing me towards the front of the hall. I reached the table that had been placed there and sat down in one of the chairs. There was an overly - excited grin carved onto the face of everyone in the room, except me.

My timekeeper was to be presented to me by the mayor of the town, whoever the hell he was. Never even met the guy. He rose from the seat next to me, and I followed suit.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we are gathered here today to celebrate the giving of Frank Anthony Iero's timekeeper." I managed to throw him and my audience of friends and family a weak smile. I spotted Mikey sitting next someone I had never seen before. He had raven hair and deep brown, intriguing eyes that invited me in. I kept my eyes trained on him for the rest if the Mayor's speech.

"Frank? It's time to receive your timekeeper." I nodded shakily. I bowed my head down slightly as he latched the gold watch-looking locket around my neck. I was terrified to see how much time I had left.

"Well? What does it say?" The audience were silent once again.

My fingers slick with sweat, I fumbled with the latched until I finally prized it open. Nothing could have prepared for what I saw.

"T-three days."
