Take Me Away (Frerard)
003
I groan as I lift my head from the kitchen table where I fell asleep. All the glass from last night has been
picked up and thrown away, not by me, but by my mother. I shift in my seat groggily and look around me.
My mother stands at the sink, running the faucet probably trying to clean it of my vomit.
"I'm sorry." I call to her but she ignores me.
I look at the wall clock by the fridge and almost jump out of my seat. 6:45, shit I can't be late for school,
not today. I jump out of the chair, wincing when I fell all the blood rush from my head and run upstairs; I
can't wear the same clothes three days in a row. I throw on a pair of black skinnies, a plain black shirt and
my signature Converse before running back to the kitchen where I left my bag. Grabbing it, I spot the
permission slip on the kitchen counter, signed by Linda Iero.
"Thanks Mom." I sigh in relief and I see her shake her head a little.
I make my way to the front door, spotting my father passed out on the couch with a beer bottle in his
hand.
"Piece of shit." I mumble and I slam the door behind me for good measure.
I'm pretty sure that he hits my mother. I've seen many bruises on her when I come home from school. She
never talks about it to anyone, probably afraid that the beatings will get worse. She used to be beautiful.
When I was younger, that is. She used to be so lively, and colourful, with her flower print dresses and
bright hazel eyes. Now everything that surrounds me is dull and lifeless all because of him. My father. I let
out a long sigh as I approach the school buss in front of the school.
"Mikey?" I call out, seeing him by the side of the bus.
"Sup?" he asks casually, until he sees my face, "DUDE! WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?"
"I fell on my way home from school crying over you dumping me." I fake sob, "I never imagined our first
fight would turn out that way."
"Shut up." he laughs and slaps my arm making my wince, "sorry."
"No, I'm sorry for saying all that shit yesterday. I was just angry over the smoking thing." I shake my head.
"It's whatever dude, but you should put some ice on your face." he mumbles.
That's the thing about Mikey. He never pushes you for answers, especially when he knows that it's a sore
topic.
"Sure thing man." I agree.
About ten minutes later everyone is boarding the busses and passing in their permission slips to Mr.
Henderson.
"The Institution is about an hour away, so make yourselves comfortable." he announces.
I slide into the seat next to Mikey and close my eyes. My head falls onto his shoulder but he leaves it
there, knowing that I need all the sleep I can get. Gotta love Mikey.
*
"Frank. Frankie! IERO!" Mikey shouts into my ear making me jump.
"What?" I snap, rubbing my eyes.
"We're hear dumb ass, let me out!" he commands, shoving me into the aisle lightly.
"Whatever." I mumble.
Everyone is escorted out of the bus and into the Institution, single filed to be old fashioned.
"Can I go home?" I ask in a mutter and Mikey punches me in the arm, "OW!"
"Frank, be nice, yah? I know it's hard for you, but picture how these people have to live everyday. Like, to
them, school would be a piece of Heaven as long as it got them out of here." Mikey scolds and I huff.
"Class, I would like to introduce you to Mr. Waters." Henerson says, awkwardly clapping for the chubby,
balding, middle-aged man standing before us.
"Thank you Mr. Henderson." Mr. Waters smiles looking at all of us, "You are all about to meet some
people who may make you view life differently. You may even learn to view the smallest things in life from
a different perspective. These people that you are about to be paired up with are considered to be stable
and they're just like you and me to some extent."
"Let's start!" Mr. Henderson barks, making us turn in attention.
"I have the list here," Mr. Waters grumbles.
I listen as he goes through the list. My name is called and I'm paired up with some girl named Kat. I keep
listening, waiting to see who Mikey is paired up with.
"Mikey Way, and Gerard Way." Mr. Waters smiles.
Mikey sucks in a deep breath and avoids my gaze. Gerard Way? Who is that? A cousin? Mikey
undoubtedly looks uncomfortable and so I raise my hand.
"Mr. Waters, is there a possibility that I can switch partners with Mikey Way?" I ask.
"I'm not sure. I suppose..." he shrugs and turns to our principle.
Mikey lets out a sigh and turns to me, "You don't have to do this."
"I want to." I state firmly.
"Thank you." Mikey says as he engulfs me in a bear hug.
"Any reason you don't want to visit your own flesh and blood?" I ask.
"It's just hard, you know?" he asks and I nod, maybe I didn't understand the exact situation but I
understood the feelings.
"Everyone, follow me into the building. Each room has a patient's name on the door, and if you're
partnered up with that patient then that's you're room. You have 2 hours with them. The first hour is for
you to get to know them, and the second is for lunch." Mr. Waters explains and we all mumble in
agreement.
I follow the group into the building and search for Gerard's door. Mikey's somewhere lost in the crowd.
When I find the large steel door, a clipboard with Gerard's information is printed neatly on a sheet of
paper. I yank it off the door and slide through, into the room. And there he sat. The raven haired boy with
his back turned to me. I knew something was going to happen, but I wasn't sure what. I suddenly became
nervous, and not because I was worried that he was a psycho, but because I knew that I would want to
help this boy. Even if it resulted in my death.
