Take Me Away (Frerard)

012

Gerard falls asleep almost as soon as we hit the road. I steer the car onto highways and long, winding roads, trying to escape my past and make a new future. One with Gerard and I together. Newark is an estimate of 2-3 hours away in this traffic, and just my luck, a downpour starts forcing me to rely on my windshield wipers for vision. It's already 4:38 and I need to get out of here quickly, with minimum stops if
God will allow. I turn the radio on and The Smiths drone out the world around me. I don't even notice
when Gerard wakes up.

"Frankie?" he asks in a soft tone, "Why are you crying? What's wrong?"

"I'm not crying." I mumble but then feel the wet salty tears slide down my face.

The world around me was becoming numb and dull, and Morrisey's voice was not helping.

"I'm just tired and a bit sad Gerard, don't worry about me." I say, wiping away escaping tears.

"Is this because of my brother?" he asks.

"No. It's my fault, not his." I disagree.

Gerard stays silent and so do I. What was there to say? We were escaping the only place we've ever
known, somehow. Thoughts race in my head when I think about the future. How will I get a job as a
wanted criminal? What if Gerard gets recognized?

"I won't get recognized." he says firmly, as though reading my thoughts.

"What do you say we do?" I squint over at him for a second.

"I'll cut my hair, dye it maybe. I'll think of something." he mumbles the last part but I still hear him.

"I'm not worried Gerard. We have each other, nothing can hurt us now, right?" I joke but he doesn't seem
amused.

"Do my parents miss me?" he whispers.

"...I-I'm sure they do. A lot changed since you had left them and I guess they didn't know how to handle it
all. Adjusting to a life without you must've been hard." I answer honestly.

"They never visited me. They promised they would, and they never did." he begins to cry softly, "Do you
want to know the last things my parents said to me?"

I stay silent.

"They said, 'Gerard, We want you to know that we love you, and that we'll get you out of here. We'll visit
you as much as we can' and I made them promise not to forget me, and they did. They forgot me and left
me in that hell hole to fend for myself." he cries.

"I...I don't know what to say." I reply soothingly.

"Why didn't they visit me? Why did they forget me? Did they stop loving me?" he sobs.

"No Gerard. I know for a fact that they never stopped loving you. How couldn't someone love you? Gerard, a lot was going on and I'm sure they have a good excuse." I try to make something up.

"No, they forgot me. They always had loved Mikey more." he sniffles.

"...Gerard, you don't need to worry about not being loved anymore. You have me, and I'll never leave you
behind." I promise and Gerard turns away.

The rain continues to pour down and I turn the radio off.

"Are you hungry Gee?" I ask, shaking him away.

I stopped the car in front of a small dinner to get dinner. The time was now 6:04 and it was starting to get
dark.

"Sure." he grumbles and wipes his eyes.

Gerard follows me out of the car and into the small diner. A hostess with a bored look on her face looks
up from her phone.

"Can I help you both?" she asks, annoyance dripping in every word.

"Table for two please." I say and she rolls her eyes before picking up a few menus and motioning for us to
follow her to a small table.

"Here." she says, shoving the menus in my arms and walks away.

"Bitch." I mutter under my breath and take a seat across from Gerard.

"That wasn't nice Frankie." he says with a giggle.

"What?" I look at him.

"You said a bad word." he scolds playfully and smiles.

"Bitch?" I ask.

"Stop! No bad words!" he laughs.

"Bitch. Bitch, bitch bitch bitch bit-"

"Can I take your order?" a blonde waitress in a short blue skirt asks, chewing her gum way too loudly.

"Oh shit." I curse and Gerard covers his mouth wide eyed, "I mean, sure. I'll have some coffee and
umm...that's it for me."

"Sure." she pops her gum and turns to Gerard, eyeing him, "How about you sweetie?"

"Erm, some coffee with, uh, the house burger and fries please?" he asks, sending her a polite smile.

"Sure cutie," she coos, and winks at him. She fucking winks.

I glare at her back as she walks away. I wanted to sock her in the giant targets like boobs she has
hanging from her top.

"Frank?" Gerard questions, "Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I just didn't like the look she was giving you." I answer.

"She was nice." Gerard protests.

"I didn't think so." I mumble.

"Aww, is wittle Fwankie jeawous?" he teases and I roll my eyes.

"Here's your coffee guys!" our waitress says and then deliberately bends down in Gerard's face, showing
off all her cleavage.

"Thanks!" Gerard smiles and she leans into him.

"You're so sweet!" she giggles and he smiles even brighter.

"Thank you miss!" he beams and she giggles again, taking a seat next to him in our cramped booth.

"What's your name?" she asks.

"Gerard, and this is Frank!" he introduces, pointing at me, but she stays focused on him.

"You are the most adorable thing. Your girlfriend must be so lucky!" she exclaims and Gerard's face gets
red, while mine gets red for different reasons.

"I don't have a girlfriend." he says and she leans in.

"Well then it's lucky for me." she smiles.

"Why?" he asks confused.

"Because I'm single as well." she laughs and as I'm about to snap I heard Gerard's voice soft and calm.

"I never said that I was single." he says quietly.

"You said that you didn't have a girlfriend." our waitress looks confused.

"I don't but I have a boyfriend," he informs, nodding over to me and the waitress looks at me outraged.

"You filthy homos!" she shoots up from our table and glares at me before storming away.

"C'mon Gerard, let's go." I say standing up.

"But I'm hungry." he states.

"I know, but I have the sneaky suspicion that our waitress might spit in our food." I chuckle and Gerard's
cringes.

"Yuck as...fuck." he giggles and now it's my turn to act appalled.

"Gerard Arthur Way! Did you just swear!" I cover my hand over my heart and Gerard rolls his eyes.

"Let's go Frankie." he laughs and we walk out, the girl on her cellphone barely noticing.

We load into our car once again and I drive away from the crappy dinner.

"Did you let the fireflies in?" Gerard asks.

"Fireflies?" I question.

"Yeah," he says, swatting at the air around him, "They're in my face!"

I stay silent for a moment before realizing something. Gerard never took his medication today, and when
he doesn't take his medication, he acts like a child and his mental illness shines through.

"Uh, Gerard, let's find a hotel nearby and stay the night. We're close to Newark." I say and he only nods.

*

The hotel I find is right down the road from the diner, and it only costs $75 a night.

"Thank you." I say to the man behind the counter.

"Course" he shrugs and I walk away.

"Where are we going?" Gerard asks as I walk towards him.

"Room...239" I answer and he stays silent.

"Frankie?" he asks.

"Yes Gerard?"

"I...never mind." he sighs and I don't question him.

"Let's go find our room." I say.

"Okay."
