Burn Bright

As we ate our dinner I did what my mother told me. My mother and father proceeded to talk about my father’s business and how things were going; my father owned America’s largest wine industry and made millions each year. Some can say we live the life everyone wanted but I hated it, I would rather live like Gerard and his family.When we finished eating and dessert was served my father cleared his throat, catching the attention of both my mother and I.

“There is a reason I called for a dinner tonight.” He said. “And that reason includes you my dear Kasey.”

“As you know we own the largest win industry. I have a friend who happens to own America’s largest fine cheese industry and he happens to have a son just about your age.” He continued.

I don’t think I’m gonna like where he’s going to go with this…

“It, for some time now, has been out intention to have the two of you meet up and get to know each other. But sadly we have not been able to arrange that. My dear friend and I have proposed a plan that we benefit both of you very well and help you two to live a comfortable life.”

“Father… Where are you going with this?” I asked him.

“Your father and I would like to see the two of you married and have a merged business.” My mother told me.

I felt my jaw drop and heard the fork I was holding hit the plate.

“An arranged marriage?”

“Arranged marriages are not legal in America.” My father said, “But we are highly pushing you to do so.”

“Why? I don’t even know the guy!”

“I didn’t meet your father until our wedding.” My mother told me.

“You two had an arranged marriage?” I asked

“Yes we did, are parents offered us the same thing, it was a choice we both made and neither one of us regrets it.” My father said.

“Your grandparents on my side were very rich but wanted to ensure things after there passing and spoke with your fathers grandparents and we both agreed to it.” My mother told me.

“This is crazy. I want to fall in love, I want a real relationship, I want to be happy. Not miserable my entire life.”

“Kasey this is your choice but we highly encourage you to accept this young mans offer.”

“May I be excused?” I asked both of my parents.

They looked at each other then turned to me and nodded. As soon as I was given the okay I ran out of the room and headed for the front door. I didn’t care that I was still wearing the dress I was given and my hair was still done nicely I just ran out the door and into my car. Once I was in my car, I just sat there. I didn’t know where to go or who to call so I just sat there. Then I pulled out my phone and called someone who I needed to see.

“Hello?” They asked when they answered.

“Carly, its Kasey.”
