Maybe They'll Leave You Alone But Not Me
I don't want to let go.
*****Day of the Funeral*****
I woke up how I’ve been waking up the past few days, with Irina in my arms and a smile on my face. I don’t remember smiling this much before her. Even the guys at the diner have noticed. Irina and I have spent the last few days at the restaurant, getting back into the routine. Irina helps out, waitressing the tables and organizing my office. It really was a good week until today. It suddenly dawned on me that Helena’s funeral was today. My smile slipped into a frown. I untangled myself from Irina and went to the kitchen to start breakfast. Mikey would be here soon. I went into the kitchen and put on classical music as always when I cooked in the morning. My phine must’ve been reading my mood, because a slow, soft song came on. I pulled out the stuff to make waffles. I was suddenly flooded with memories of Helena. She made me waffles when I moved in with her. She always let me play my music while we worked side by side at her house. And now she’s gone, I thought. A solitary tear slid down my face as I continued making breakfast. Irina walked in, rubbing her eyes and yawning.
“Morning. What’s fo- Gerard? What’s wrong?”
“Today’s her funeral. At 3. She’s gone.”
“Oh, Gerard. You go take a shower and let me finish breakfast. That’ll relax you.”
“Okay. Mikey will be here in a few.”
“Okay. Go now.” She kissed me quickly before turning her attention to the mix. I slowly trudged out of the kitchen and into my bathroom. I turned the water all the way up and climbed in. The water relaxed me but didn’t take the pain of her absence away. I scrubbed myself clean until the water turned cold. I quickly jumped out and pulled on a pair of sweats and a t shirt. I sauntered back to the kitchen. Mikey and Irina were laughing at some joke I didn’t hear.
“Hey Mikes. Irina, it smells lovely.” I said as I hugged my brother and kissed the top of her head.
“Hey bro. Irina was telling me about your white kitchen.”
“Oh, yeah. Did she tell you that she started it?”
‘Oh no I didn’t! You put it on me first!”
We all laughed and dug into the waffles.
“These are delicious Irina. Thanks.”
“I try. Someone has to feed his skinny butt.”
“Hey, I usually cook around here!” I said. It was a nice atmosphere with Mikey, Irina, and I sharing breakfast and having a good laugh. We all finished eating and helped cleanup, doing our usual routine. We left Irina to finish doing the dishes while I walked Mikes to the door.
“Gerard, you’re still coming right?”
“Mikes, I’ll be there. I won’t go near them, but I’ll be there.”
“They ask about you all the time bro. Maybe it’s time..”
“Mikey, back off. This is between me and them. Are you bringing Alicia?”
“Yeah, she’ll be there.”
“Okay, I’ll see you then.”
“Bye Gerard.”
“Bye.” We hugged and he left. After locking the door, I went to find Irina. It was only 10:30, so I figured it was okay to watch a movie.
“Irina?”
“I’m in the living room. Movie? We can watch Dracula until it’s time to get dressed.” She was
already standing over the DVD player, pushing in the disc.
“I think you read my mind.” I said as I plopped down on the couch.
“I just know you.” She said, curling up against me.
We watched movies until 1. I went and put my black suit on with a red tie. After doing my usual routine, I wandered off to my music room. I picked up my guitar and strummed Helena’s song. Just in the middle of my song, Irina filled the doorway. Her lace dress showed off her curves perfectly. Her hair thrown into a fancy braid. The ribbon around her waist matched my tie. New black converse adorned her feet; but through it all, there was Irina. She was absolutely stunning.
“You’re so beautiful.” Was all I could say.
She blushed and twirled before coming to me and dragging me up by my tie.
“You’re not half bad yourself.” And then she kissed me. I would never get use to the way she kissed me. Her hands ran through my hair. I pulled her close and melted into her mouth, not wanting to go anywhere or see anyone. I just wanted her. She broke us apart, breathing hard.
“Let’s go, Gerard, or we’ll be late.”
“You’re right. Come on.”
I grabbed her hand and led her to the car, but I really just wanted to kiss her instead. We drove in silence. As we arrived and parked, I sighed. Irina slipped her hand into mine and gave an encouraging squeeze.
“You can do this.”
“I know, but I don’t want to say goodbye.”
“This isn’t goodbye; it’s just a reminder of all her beautiful memories. We’ll never forget her. She’s never really gone; her spirit is with you.”
“I love you, Irina. Thank you. Let’s go.” We got out, enlaced hands, and walked to what was the worst day of my life.
