Maybe They'll Leave You Alone But Not Me
So Long and Goodnight
Irina left Mikey and I sitting on the couch to shower. Mikey turned and looked at me as she left the room.
“Bro, did you really just bring her here? She could be a serial killer!”
“Mikey relax. Irina is not a serial killer. She would’ve killed me by now. What did you want me to do? Leave her unconscious and vunerable?”
“No. She seems pretty cool.”
“Good, because she will be staying with me for awhile.”
“Oh, well be careful bro. How are you holding up?”
“I miss her, Mikey. I can’t believe she’s really gone.”
“I know. It’s hitting me pretty hard too. The funeral is Saturday.”
“I know.. I’m gonna bring Irina with me. She lost her parents in a car crash. She needs a place to stay because she is running away from her foster home.”
“You can’t hide her from the law!”
“Mikey, she was really upset when she talked about it. I don’t know what happened, but I know it’s not good.”
“Gerard. Please tell me you aren’t falling for her; you just met her!”
“I know, I know! But Mikey, she is so beautiful.”
“Gerard…”
“Hey guys!” Irina walked back into the living room, a bit more relaxed and perky. She sported black skinny jeans and a red t-shirt underneath the hoodie I found her in last night. She looked from my face to Mikey’s and all of the light went from her face. “Did I interrupt something?”
“No.” we said in unison.
“Okay….So, um,..”
I got up and looked at Mikey. “We’re going grocery shopping now. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Yeah, see you tomorrow. Bye Irina. Nice to meet you.” He walked past us both and out the front door. I turned and faced Irina.
“Shall we?”
“Um, okay.” I went to the garage and started up my car and backed out my driveway. Irina sat in silence and looked out the window as we drove to the supermarket. She constantly looked behind us and around us as we parked and got out.
“Irina?” Her head swung to look at me in alarm.
“Are you looking for someone?”
“Just making sure we’re not being followed.” That was odd but I shook it off and grabbed a buggy. As we went up and down the aisles, I grabbed the usual and made sure Irina got whatever she needed. Soon, the cart was full of junk food, stuff to make dinner for the week, and other items we needed. Irina pulled out a wad of cash from her backpack but I waved it away.
“But, I’m already staying with you and taking up space. I need to pay.”
“Irina, I’m not letting you pay. You can cook tonight.”
“Okay.” I finished paying and pushed our buggy out to our car. Together, we filled the backseat with groceries and drove home.
After arriving home and unloading/putting away the groceries, Irina set out to take a nap and I went to my music room. It was my favorite place to be. My favorite guitar was one Helena had given me. It sat on the stand, wanting to be played. I picked it up and strummed a few notes. I pulled out my lyrics book and began to write Helena a song.
Long ago
Just like the hearse, you die to get in again
We are so far from you
Burning on just like a match you slide to incinerate
The lives of everyone you know
And what's the worst to take
From every heart you break
And like the blade you stain
Well, I've been holding on tonight
What's the worst thing I can say?
Things are better if I stay
So long and goodnight
So long not goodnight
Came a time
When every star fall brought you to tears again
We are the very hurt you sold
And what's the worst to take
From every heart you break
And like the blade you stain
Well, I've been holding on tonight
What's the worst thing I can say?
Things are better if I stay
So long and goodnight
So long not goodnight
And if you carry on this way
Things are better if I stay
So long and goodnight
So long and goodnight
Can you hear me?
Are you near me?
Can we pretend
To leave? And then
We'll meet again
When both our cars collide.
What's the worst thing I can say?
Things are better if I stay
So long and goodnight
So long not goodnight
And if you carry on this way
Things are better if I stay
So long and goodnight
So long and goodnight
When I’d had finished, a clapping came from the doorway. I swiveled around and sure enough, Irina was there. God she’s beautiful. Her hair was framed around her face in silver curls. I must’ve been staring because she coughed.
“Sorry. Has anyone told you that you’re beautiful?”
“Erm, no. Thank you. Anyways, where do I find the pots and pans?”
“Oh, in the cabinets by the stove. Come on, I’ll help.” Together, we went to the kitchen and
began to cook and talk. She liked all the bands on my shelf and was actually very smart. It was nice to have a comfortable conversation; it gave me the opportunity to study her. The way her eyes lit up was adorable and her laugh was musical. God, she really is beautiful. I wonder what she could possibly be hiding behind those eyes. And right then and there, I decided to find out.
“Irina, why did you run away, like the real reason?”
