Maybe They'll Leave You Alone But Not Me
We are so far from you
After Saturday’s events, Irina and I spent Sunday at the house. I could feel old habits coming around, like the urge to drink and smoke cigarettes. But I wasn’t going to let my father’s words get to me. I had to stay strong for Irina. She could tell I was thinking about yesterday’s conversation, so she tried to distract me all day. And it worked. When I woke up, I was alone in my bed. I could hear Irina moving about in the kitchen and Smashing Pumpkins coming from my speakers. I rolled out of bed and slipped into my sweats. I watched from the kitchen doorway as Irina jammed out to her music and made pancakes. She still had her hair in tangles but her shorts and tank top made her look like a morning goddess. I snuck up behind her and wrapped my arms around her waist. She tensed up but relaxed as she heard me laugh.
“I love seeing you jam out in my kitchen. It smells wonderful.”
“Well, thank you.” She wriggled around and folded her arms around my neck as she kissed the tip of my nose. I kissed her back, feeling her lips form a smile beneath mine.
“You’re burning my pancakes.” I stepped back from the counter, dragging her with me. I kissed her forehead before letting her go. She quickly flipped her pancake. I made me a cup of coffee and leaned against the counter with it in my hand. I quietly sipped my coffee, letting my mind wander. Events of yesterday began to cross my mind, but Irina was tugging my arm gently.
“Gerard, breakfast is ready.”
“Okay.” We sat down at the table, a plate of pancake between us. We quietly ate; Irina glanced worriedly at me throughout the meal.
“So, what do you want to do today?” she asked, drawing my mind from somber memories.
“I don’t know. I need to do household stuff and do some paperwork for the diner.”
“Okay, I can help with that. What do we have to do?” “Irina, that’s okay; I can handle it all.”
“Gerard, I basically live here now. I can help with the chores.” We laughed and finished eating.
“Okay, well the kitchen could use a good scrub. It still looks a little white to me.” I chuckled. Irina giggled and poked me.
“No thanks to you!” She laughed as she washed off her dishes. I brought her mine and fixed my second cup of coffee.
“That was so not my fault. I’ll be in the laundry room if you need me.”
“Okay.” She started up her music and was back in her own little world. I watched her for a few moments before moving down the hall. I took the clean clothes from the dryer and put them on the living room couch. I folded everything and put Irina’s clothes in the basket while I put mine up. As I moved through my room, I started to feel that hurt in losing Helena again. Tears welled up in my eyes and blurred my vision. I sat on my bed and stared at my floor. Irina walked by and saw me. She came in and wiped the wetness off my face.
“Gerard, shh it’s okay. I’m here.” I looked at her. Ice blue eyes met mine and a sad smile was on her face. I shook my head and kissed her. She kissed me back passionately. We parted too soon. Irina got up and reached for my hand. I gave it to her and she pulled me into a much needed hug. We let go and I smiled at her.
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome” she said.
“Your laundry is in the basket on the couch. I didn’t want to erm put up your erm lady things.” I could feel the heat rushing to my face. She laughed loudly and left the room, her laughter echoing down the halls.
“COME ON, GERARD. I NEED HELP WITH THE LIVING ROOM.”
“COMING!” I yelled back. I walked to the living room and found Irina standing over pizza boxes and empty soda cans.
“Wow, it got really messy in here.” I said, taking in the scene.
“Yeah, so can you take out the garbage? It’s starting to smell.”
“Sure.” I got a trash bag and gathered all of it from the house while Irina opened windows. I walked outside and to the end of my driveway with both hands sporting garbage bags. I threw open the half full can and stuck both bags in. Just as I turned around to go inside a white suburban slowly drove by, as if taking in the scene. I looked curiously, but blew it off. A lot of houses are on sale Gerard. Stop staring creepily, I thought. I turned back around and headed inside, just as the suburban drove by again.
