I'm Not Okay!
Uniforms and Neck Ties
Gerard Way:
A loud sound woke me up, and it wasn’t my alarm clock, it was my annoying ass mother. She always tried to get me up in the mornings because at night I’d always unplug my alarm clock. She gets annoyed easily so, today I'm trying to ignore her loud yelling.
“Gerard Arthur Way! Get your butt in here!” She yelled.
“Nah! I'm just going to stay here, but thanks anyway!” I yelled to her. Sarcasm is one of my specialties.
She came into my room. I looked up at her. “Hello, how are you?” I smiled and looked up at her.
She perched her lips. “Gerard, today is a special day, and you are not going to ruin it.”
What was so special about it? Soon enough, she pulled off my covers and started yanking me out of bed. Not again, I thought to myself.
“Gosh mother, have you gotten stronger?” I asked sarcastically. “Or I'd just gotten weaker. Hope not, I’m weak enough.”
She grunted and got me out of bed. She was dragging me into the bathroom, and shoved me in there.
“Now, since we got the getting you out of the bed situation done with, get your ass in that shower or I'll kick some ass!” She yelled.
Oh brother, here we go again with this I’m all big and bad thing. I could feel the blank expression on my face. This was getting old. Every morning, too! I wish that she’d just get over herself already. I was standing in the bathroom holding the door open until I'd finally had enough. I slammed the door in her face.
“Gerard Way! Look what you did! You spoiled my whole day!” She went on through the door like I was actually listening.
I just turned the shower on, mostly to drown her out, stripped off my clothes and got in.
Mikey Way:
Beep, beep, beep! The alarm clock went off, but I was already awake. Being woken up by my brother and mom was a pretty good wake up call, you know, with all of the yelling and screaming, so yeah…
I ‘overheard’ my mom tell Gerard it was a special day, but what was so important about it? It’s just the first day of school. Right now, I’m feeling a bit suspicious about things and what my mother could possibly be up to. What was my mom hiding?
Who knows, I thought to myself. I got up to get dressed. I didn’t feel like taking a shower today, and I know Gerard would be taking forever. As I was getting dressed, I looked out of my bedroom window from above my bed.
It was pretty bright. The light shinned in my eyes. I never understood what people got out of going outside. All it was to me was just some weird atmosphere, where animals roamed and had green grass and blue sky. The only thing I liked about it was the fresh air. I got tired of the smoke aroma from my friends, brother and parents. I’m starting to choke here! I wanted to scream.
As soon as I was finished, I combed my hair the way I wanted it to look. Well, at least I tried. I need to put hair gel in it, and to do that, I needed to get into the bathroom. Great…Gerard was still in there.
I usually put my hair into a Mohawk, but I didn’t have the rest of my head shaved. I just wouldn’t be able to stand that. No, my hair would rather be in my Mohawk or just shagging straight down.
I knocked on the bathroom door. “Ya decent?” I asked Gerard, making sure so I could get in there and quickly grab the gel.
“Come in!” He told me.
I walked in, keeping my eyes down at my feet just in case.
“What the hell are you looking at?” He asked me.
I looked up, wishing I hadn’t. Gerard was butt naked. Gerard Way:
“Ah, dude, get some clothes on!” Mikey yelled.
“I had my towel on, but it slipped!” I yelled back.
It did, really, I mean, come on. What towel would just fall when someone had just walked in? Apparently mine, I guess.
“And why are you in here anyway?” I asked.
“Uh, you said I could.” He said as he looked away.
I grabbed my towel and wrapped it around myself. Damn towel. “No, no, I mean, what do ya need?”
“Gel,” He grabbed it and left in a hurry.
“Fucking idiot,” I mumbled.
That’s when I looked and noticed my clothes were gone from off the countertop. I walked out of the bathroom to the living room, with my towel held tight to myself. “Mom!” I yelled. “Where did you put my clothes?” Man she gets on my nerves!
“Linda, give the boy his clothes.” My dad told her.
“No, I have a surprise for you boys.” She smiled.
Mikey just got to my side, keeping a little distance between us because of what just happened in the bathroom.
“What now?” I grunted.
What is she trying to do this time?
“I can’t tell you now, that would ruin the surprise silly.” I rolled my eyes. I hate when she uses baby words on us.
“Mom, what did you do with my clothes?” I asked again, getting more frustrated now.
“Gerard, Mikey, your new clothes are on the dining table.” She smiled.
What was that all about? I found out when Mikey and I both looked at the table in the middle of the dining room. There were two uniforms, neatly pressed lying on top.
“Our school is making us wear uniforms this year?” Mikey asked.
“Nope,” She flashed a smile again.
Something’s not coming together right, that is, until the horrible thought finally popped into my head.
“We’re going to an academy?” I yelled. “How could you do that to us? We don’t want to go to an academy!” I continued.
“An academy?” Mikey began to yell back. “Mom, that’s not fair! Why…but…”
Mikey Way:
I stopped there. I couldn’t say anything else. What was she thinking?
“Now boys look, it isn’t that bad-”
“Not that bad? It’s horrible!” Gerard cut her off.
Dad just rolled his eyes and left.
“Mom, why are you making us do this?” I asked.
“Because, I think it’s best if you two went to a better school. Your last one was a little…” She stopped there.
I don’t know why, but…wait, I do know why. Our school was pretty awesome! They let us do whatever we wanted, but an academy, really? Apparently our mother doesn’t like us having any fun. I know, I just know that this academy is going to ruin our lives!
“What about the guys? We can’t go to a separate school from them! That would ruin everything!” He yelled at her.
She just rolled her eyes at him too. I know she just hopes that we, no she just hopes that she will never have to see or hear from them ever again. She does not like the guys. I kinda see why, but they’re not…that bad, I guess, but me and Gerard just can't like without them, their a part of our lives, kinda…and without them, having a band with just me and Gerard would be pretty hard. I mean, come on, a band with only a bass player and a singer? Nah, I’d rather have the rest of the puzzle than just two of the pieces.
“What about Bert? Now you know that’s gonna be hard on me!” Gerard continued.
Bert and Gerard were best friends. They did everything together, and I mean everything. They smoked together, they got their clothes together, they put on their eyeliner together, and they even got their hair dyed black together! They seem like a few girls to me. I think Gerard’s just obsessed with Bert.
“Boys, we’re not moving! You’re just going to switch schools.”
Gerard Way:
“Oh, thank god!” I bowed my head down with my hand on my chest.
“Yes, yes, now stop arguing and get your uniforms on!” She pushed.
“Fine,” Mikey sighed, pacing over to the table and grabbed his uniform.
“What’s your problem?” I asked sarcastically. He just glared at me as he passed by. “Well then,” I said as if I were mad.
I looked over at the table with the uniform on it. “Great,” I grumbled to myself. I walked over to my mom. “Do I have to wear it?” I asked her, hoping for the right answer.
“Yes, now get dressed.” Nope, not the correct answer.
“Fine!” I grabbed the uniform and left. “Bitch,” I whispered as I left.
I got to my door, but then I heard rustling sounds from inside my room. I went in to see what it was, and that’s when I saw a person lying on my bed, looking up at me.
“What's up?” Frank Iero asked, smiling as he lay with his hands underneath his head.
Frank was one of my best friends, next to Bert of course.
“Nothin’ and uh…” I paused. “You do know you could have just gone through the front door, instead of going through the window, right?” I asked.
I think that he just wanted to feel rebellious again. He has phases with these kinds of things. Like one year he was so damn bored that he broke into a convenient store, just to satisfy the need for an adrenaline rush. All he really got (or should I say stole) was some porn and candy. I like candy.
Bert was his accomplice, but I think it was actually more like the other way around. Bert was the one out of all six of us to actually be the master mind and come up with all of those awesome plans to do stuff like that. They were cool, pretty fun too, even if it did result in sending me and Bert both to jail until my parents came and picked us up.
“Yeah, I know, but I didn’t feel like it, so I just…went through the window.” He smiled. “That and I know your mom doesn’t like me, and I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t have let me in if I came knocking on your front door.”
We laughed together, but then soon he grew serious. “Ger’?”
“Yeah?” I asked.
Ger’ was my nickname, obviously. I know it’s spelled G-E-R, but it’s pronounced with a J, okay? So get it through your damn head people and don’t call me grr as if you were growling at me! I got that all the time from the kids who picked on me last year at school, mocking me.
“I have some bad news.” He went on, sighing as he sat up.
“Yeah, what is it?” I asked.
“This year, I won’t be going to our school, I’ll be going to an academy.” He frowned at his words.
Hmm…I can make a big deal out of this, make a total scene and freak him out. This will be fun…and I couldn’t believe he was going too!
“What?” I shouted. “How could you do this Frank? We were supposed to be a part of a band! You just can’t leave!” I threw up my free hand that wasn’t clinging onto my towel dramatically. “How will we survive without you?” I paused for a second, but then kept up the act.
“Oh no, I…I think I’m gonna faint!” I put my hand on my head and started to pretend to lose my balance, and then fell to the floor.
Frank Iero:
“Gerard, are you okay?” I asked, quickly getting off the bed and ran over to him, putting my hand on his chest.
He was lying down on the floor with his eyes wide open as if he’d just seen a ghost, or as if he was surprised by the fact that he had just fainted.
Suddenly, without warning, he just burst into an uncontrollable laughter. “Ah, man, that’s so funny. You actually believed that I fainted, especially for the fact that you’re going to an academy?” He continued to laugh, mocking me.
“That’s not funny Gerard.” I scowled him. “I actually believed that you cared for once.” I got up to leave, but he grabbed my arm to stop me.
“Wait, what do you mean by that?” He asked as he got up too.
“Nothing,” I said as I shoved his arm off my shoulder.
“No, it was not nothing.” He said as he grabbed my arm this time. “Now tell me what you meant by that.”
“No, there’s no point.” I turned away, but remained wher I stood in his room.
“Well, at least just stay, I have to tell you something too.” He smiled as I looked over my shoulder at him.
Now what? What did he have to tell me that was possibly important enough to make me want to stay?
“Okay, you know how you said that you were going to an academy, right?” He asked, trying to hold back an obvious grin.
“Yeah, so?” I rolled my eyes. I knew he was just going to try to make the situation even worse for me.
It’s not like I actually wanted to switch schools and leave my friends behind. I wanted to stay with them more than anything, but still, there was nothing I could do to change the problem, he didn’t have to make me feel bad about it.
“Well guess what,” He got wide eyed again.
I finally grew tired of waiting. “Tell me already!”
“Okay, okay, don’t get your panties in a knot, I’ll tell ya.” He paused for more dramatic affect but then continued when he saw how impatient I was getting. “Me and Mikey are both going to the academy too!” He yelled, throwing his hands up to symbolize his excitement.
“Really?” I got excited too. Maybe he and I-I mean, maybe me, Gerard, Mikey, and the rest of the guys won’t be separated after all!
“Dude, that’s awesome!” I raised my hand to give him a high five, which I knew was kind of childish, but I was too excited to care, and Gerard was already childish, so it didn’t really matter with him.
He laughed and raised his hand to high five me back, but as soon as he did, his towel fell off. All I could do was just stare at his face, blinking my eyes, thinking, ‘Well now look what you did, now pick up your damn towel!’
“Uh…you kind of dropped something there. Are you gonna to get that?” I asked as he stared back at me, just standing there awkwardly.
He shrugged. “Whoops,” He bent down and quickly grabbed the towel from the floor, locked it around himself tightly and looked back up at me before starting to push me out. I guess he was going to get dressed now…
Mikey Way:
I was staring at myself into my bedroom mirror. I had put on my uniform already, and did not like what I saw. Me…in a uniform? Doesn’t go to well, at all. I felt like I was choking from this tie around my neck. This is so not going to be a good year. Right then, in the middle of my thoughts, a door slammed, followed soon by a knock at my door.
“Can I come in?” I heard, recognizing Frank’s voice. What was he doing here?
“Yeah, I guess.” I answered him.
He opened the door, seeing me in my uniform. “Wo-ow,” He paused, his eyes studying me. “You look-”
“Don’t say it! Whatever you have to say, just don’t say it.” I raised my hand up to stop him. I didn’t want to hear his ridicule.
“Oh come on, all I was going to say is that you look nice. That’s all,” He stopped, but then added “And you’re probably going to look better in that thing than Gerard would anyway.” He joked.
“Yeah, I’m sure.” I said sarcastically.
He laughed. “Well guess what,”
I gave him a look. I hated guessing games. Gerard tried to play them with me all of the time, and they always resulted in some incredibly stupid and pointless joke. “What?”
“I’m going to the same academy as you are.” He said, not really seeming to care to tell me. Gerard, I’m sure he had something to do with it. I blame him for almost everything.
“Really? That’s awesome.” I said back in the same bland tone. I didn’t want him to feel like I was making too much of a big deal out of it, like I know Gerard would.
He shrugged as he sighed. “Yeah, I guess, but I'm not too excited about it.”
“Well I understand, neither am I. Come on, I mean, look at me!” I said, holding out my arms. I looked ridiculous!
He took me literally and started eyeing me again, circling me with his hand on his chin as if he were thinking hard about something I couldn’t read. “Hmm,” He hummed, tapping his chin.
“What?” I asked, lowering my arms.
“Oh, nothing.” He continued looking at me weirdly.
“What is it?” I shouted, wanting to know what he could possibly be thinking.
He chuckled. “Well, it’s just that, I know I’m gonna have to wear that damn thing, along with Bob and Ray of course,” He mumbled that last part as if he were speaking to himself. “So I wonder how Bob’s going to take it when he finds out how ugly that thing is. I don’t think he’ll be able to stand to wear it.”
“Wait, what do you mean by along with Bob and Ray?” I asked. “Why would they be wearing it, too?”
“Oh yeah, I knew I forgot to tell something to Gerard!” He said as he waved his finger at me. “Bob and Ray’s parents decided to make them go to the academy too!” He continued. “What a weird coincidence, huh?” He laughed.
I rolled my eyes at him, even though I was pretty happy by this news. I was really glad that we would all be together again and not have to go to different schools.
Gerard Way:
I didn’t want to look at myself, I wasn’t going to look at myself. There is no way I was going to wear this to some damn prep school.
“Oh no,” I whispered to myself as I stood in front of my bedroom mirror. What if…it’s an all boy’s school? No! No, I would die if I had to go to a place like that! There is no way I would even consider going to a school with no girls.
I ran out of my room, not caring if anyone saw me in this damn thing anymore. “Mom!” I shouted. “Please, tell me, are there going to be girls at this academy? There is, isn’t there?” I yelled, even though she was like, right in front of my face in the living room.
“You’ll find out.” She smiled, making me very nervous. My jaw dropped. Why wouldn’t she tell me? “Boys…and Frank?” She stopped as soon as she saw Mikey coming out of his room, followed by Frank.
Apparently, and obviously, she didn’t care for him being here. I could so tell by her expression as soon as she saw him. It was kind of funny, because one second she was all smile, but it quickly disappeared and turned into an unhappy frown, especially after he greeted her.
He grinned. “What up, Linda?” He knew she hated it when we called her by her first name. She preferred to go by Mrs. Way for some reason.
“Yeah…anyway, as I was saying. Are you two boys ready to go?” She asked us.
“Three boys, Linda, three. Learn to count.” He gleamed at her as if he were proud of himself for his sarcastic remark.
“Uh, yeah, just a sec.” I said, hoping to cut their bickering short. “Hold on, I got to get my eyeliner!” I said as I quickly ran to my room, but as I went in, I stopped shortly.
“Wait, where is it?” I asked myself as I saw that it was missing from my nightstand. There was a knock on my open door.
It was Frank again, and in his raised hand, was my eyeliner.
“Ugh, you ass! You stole my eyeliner!” I scowled at him.
“Yup,” He laughed as he tossed it to me.
I almost, scratch that, I mean, he almost missed my hand…so I…technically almost didn’t catch it. Man, he had horrible aim…Yeah, let’s go with that.
“Let’s go already,” He said, looking irritated.
“Fine, fine,” I said as I grabbed a few things off my nightstand.
“Hurry Gerard!” Mikey shouted from the living room.
“I’m comin’!” I yelled back.
Mikey Way:
“Well hurry up then!” I yelled at him again.
He ran out to the living room and right out the door.
“Finally,” I rolled my eyes.
I don’t know why he insisted on wearing eyeliner to school. I guess I understood when it came to adding a special look for our band, but I still wouldn’t have worn it like an everyday kind of thing.
“Um, Frank?” Linda, I mean, my mom asked and continued to give Frank a weird look. “What are you doing here, anyway?”
“Oh, well I’m going to the same academy, too now.” He told her, grinning from ear to ear.
“Well then, why aren’t you in uniform?” She asked him.
“Well, Linda,” He said her name again to piss her off, putting his hand on her shoulder. I just rolled my eyes, wanting to get out of this house already, but they were blocking the doorway.
“The reason is I think that uniform just won’t look too good on me, so that means no chicks will love me like they usually do. No sexiness, no beautiful, hot, gorgeous girls, understood now, Linda?” He asked as he got in her face.
She just backed up a little with a glare on her face so he wouldn’t be too close.
“Frank, leave her alone. God, why do you always try to start a fight with her?” I asked, trying not to smile.
Frank would always pick one little thing from what anything my mom had said and try to make an argument out of it with her. Though, what I was really laughing about was the ‘sexiness’ and the ‘hot chicks’ that just could never resist him.
Come on, do you honestly believe him about the whole ‘chicks love me’ thing, do you? It was all just an act that he loved to put on.
He laughed again. “Fine, whatever.” He said after she refused to give in to his little game.
“Get in the car Mikey.” She sighed, grabbing her keys.
“Yes Linda, I mean, oops. That uh, slipped out, I guess. Ugh, sorry mom.” I said as I quickly walked out the door to avoid her glare. Damn it, Frank said her name so much that I accidently began to say it.
Every time I accidently said her name instead of mom, there were major consequences. So, I ran for the car until I couldn’t see her anymore. Wait…oh my god…I’m scared of my own mother! Now that’s just fucking crazy. I can’t believe I'm a…mama’s boy.
Oh God…
I’m screwed.
Gerard Way:
“Why the hell did you just run from mom?” I asked Mikey, concerned for him at the moment. I mean, wouldn’t you be?
I thought so…
“I wasn’t running…away from her, stupid.” He choked on his words, not even believing them himself as he said it.
“Yeah, obviously.” I said sarcastically, rolling my eyes.
“Alright boys, get into the car.” Mom said as she unlocked the doors for us, but not before throwing a quick scowl at Mikey.
He did it again, he must have said her first name again. I looked at him as I opened my door, along with Frank as he got in. Mikey was already sitting in the back seat before Frank could slide in next to him. He was looking down trying to avoid anyone from looking at him in the eyes. We all got in and headed off.
I needed to put on my eyeliner before we got there. I’m just glad I didn’t forget to crab my pack of cigarettes before we left or otherwise, it was going to be a very long day.
I grabbed that and my other eyeliner off my nightstand, while Frank had still had my other one. Well, not now at least.
Bastard stole my eyeliner. I’m still upset about that right now. I think I’m going to cry. Sob, sob…
Frank Iero:
Okay, so…what was everybody’s problem? I mean, come on. Linda looked pissed at something, most likely me, Mikey looked as if he ad just saw his fatal future, and Gerard…well, I don’t know what the hell he was doing, but he looked as if he was crying?
“What the fuck?” I chuckled to myself. I could tell they weren’t genuine tears, so I don’t know what was going on with him.
He looked back and stuck his tongue out at me. I did the same back and looked away, even though I know we were just goofing around.
Mikey Way:
I had finally lifted my head back up, but I was not going to look at anyone, especially my mother. I still don’t know why I get scared of her so easily, but there’s something about her that’s terrifying. I don’t know what though.
I was staring out of my window, watching the trees quickly pass by, as if they were trying to get out of the way so they wouldn’t get hit by the oncoming cars. Even though there were some with their branches broken, hanging lifelessly on the ground to where they were sticking out, the cars kept running over them as if they weren’t even there.
I felt like one of those branches, constantly run over, feeling invisible and unimportant. While everyone else is having fun jumping out of the way of life, I was feeling forgotten and left alone.
Gerard Way:
There, all done with my eyeliner. Now I was staring at myself through the mirror. Oh man, I looked good. I just wanna kiss myself cause I look so damn sexy. Then I realized my long black hair looked to neat and preppy, because I had just combed it, so I started to run my fingers through it wildly until it looked like sex hair.
Frank Iero:
It was about 20 minutes after being in the car, but it felt like an hour, and everyone was tired of being in the car, but not me. I was so damn glad that we weren’t there yet, but everyone else just looked like they couldn’t wait to get out.
“You guys are crazy,” I muttered, not thinking before I spoke.
Mikey must have heard me because he turned his head and gave me a half-hearted smile. I flashed a brief smile before looking away.
Mikey Way:
When Frank turned away because of his embarrassment, I found it kind of funny. It was funny seeing him unconfident for once. I liked it. He’s not being his “I’m so damn sexy, you know you can’t resist” self.
The trees were beginning to clear awhile ago and now we were back into a more populated part of the city, which meant we were getting close. I was and wasn’t thankful for that. I’m glad to be getting away from my mother, and out of this damn car, but I didn’t want to be going to this new school. It was already too late. We had just arrived.
