Twisted Souls
Prologue
Mikey Way twisted awkwardly, attempting to see his back in the mirror. It was really hard to do while holding up his shirt and sitting precariously on the edge of the sink. He sighed. He’d have to ask Gerard how bad it was, and that would mean Gerard would freak and think he had leukemia or something again. Last time Gerard had even taken Mikey to the hospital, but there had been absolutely nothing wrong with him except his usual asthma. Even though Gerard had ranted worriedly about mysterious bruises, the doctors had laughed it off. Mikey was pretty sure they thought he was getting into fights and just not telling his brother. One of them had even winked at him and had airily told him he had done much worse than Mikey as a kid. Mikey didn’t really like people like that.
So with a heavy heart Mikey peeked out of the shared bathroom into Gerards room. Gerard was there, drawing of course. But he turned round when the door creaked a little.
“Watcha need, Mikeyway?”
Mikey thought Gerard’s cheerfulness was slightly disconcerting. It probably meant he and Frank had gone on a date. That had been cute when they were at the holding hands stage. But now, well, not so cute. He really rather not think about it actually, it was kind of gross. He had walked in on them once, and finding Frank with a hand down Gerard’s pants had scarred him for life.
“I got more of them, Gee.”
Gerard’s face changed to one of concern. Mikey liked that his brother was so protective of him.
“Shit Mikey, where?”
“M’back. Can’t see them.”
Mikey didn’t really like talking very much. Most of english was only there to make the rest of it sound better. Plus talking was exhausting and distracted him from his music. But Gee was okay. Even if annoying as he practically tore Mikey’s good Dawn of the Dead t-shirt off.
Mikey waited patiently as his brothers hands explored his back. Most people would’ve thought it weird, but Mikey didn’t mind being intimate with his brother.
“Mikey, these look really bad. Like you got run over by a bike or something.”
Gerard knew that the bruises just appeared, and were not the result of fighting. He knew because Mikey never lied to him. At least, not about something like this. He would happily lie about whether or not he had the latest Doom Patrol comic.
Gerard didn’t know what to do. Bruises just showing up randomly really wasn’t normal, he was pretty sure. Mikey would sometimes go into class fine and then come out limping, a barrage of bruises having mysteriously appeared on his legs. Mikey didn’t complain, but Gerard could tell he was weirded out too. And Mikey didn’t get weirded out by anything. Gerard thought through his mental list of probable causes.
- Leukemia. He’d read about it in some heartbreaking book about this little girl who’s sister had had it. Damn he’d cried so hard at the end of that.
- Weird drugs. He’d asked Mikey and had been given a very offended look. So that was a no.
- Mikey was getting beaten up. That was also a no. One of the times Mikey had gotten the bruises was while sleeping in Gerard’s bed. Gerard wasn’t that bad.
- Mikey was a Princess. This one was legible. You know, Princess and the Pea and all that shit? He was just like super delicate or something.
- Mikey shared a soul with someone. On a website there had been this thing about people who shared souls. If one of them got hurt the other could at least feel it, and if they were close they would get bruises too. That would mean someone at school had Mikey’s soul and was getting beaten up. Not good.
They had already checked off 1, 2 and 3 as no, and the princess one would probably make Mikey angry at him. Gerard didn’t quite understand why; Mikey was plenty fine with ballerinas, fairies and unicorns, but he turned and ran at the first mention of princesses. Anyway, Mikey seemed a little doubtful of the sharing-a-soul idea, but he didn’t totally blow Gerard off so that was OK he guessed. Gerard sighed and went back to drawing, hoping Mikey got no new bruises.
Notes
I've tried to write it like I imagine Mikey kind of would think at the point in his life, slightly disconnected and deadpan expression wise. Tell me what you think?
Thanku!
