The only Hope

Chapter 35

Hope’s pov:

I woke up, my head was pounding. It took some time before my eyes were used to the overly lit room I was in.

Oh God, I was in a room like this again… Shit.

I tried to move but I felt my arm getting yanked down again. Great, handcuffs…

The sound triggered Korse to get up from his chair in the corner of the room. “Aah Hope, admit it. Doesn’t this feel nostalgic? Hmm? Like old times?”

Old times my ass, they were bad times. I kept my mouth shut.

“Oh come on, doesn’t it feel good to be back? To be…” He came closer to the bed I was in and leaned over me. “…Together again? Just the two of us?”

I nearly puked at the sight of his wide grin and moved my face away from his.

“You should try a little gratitude Hope, because this is the only home you’re going to have after I destroy the diner.” He whispered.

My eyes widened and I turned to him again. Shit, I forgot. He’s going to kill them! They have no idea he is coming for them! Had they noticed I was gone anyway?

The fear in my eyes told him everything. He grinned. “Don’t tell me you actually became friends with them? That you trust them?”

I held my breath.

He moved away now. “That desert is mine and I intend to keep it clean.” His voice went low. “No vermin allowed…”

“You’re wasting your time! There’s no-one there!” I tried to break the handcuffs by yanking them, but Korse grabbed my wrists.

“Then how do you explain the gun, huh? Besides, if there was no-one there you wouldn’t lose yourself like this.” His smirk made me nauseous. I felt tears coming down my face and stopped moving.

“You poor girl. Lying to protect your friends.” He hissed. “But you know what? They are not. I bet you don’t even know what they have done to you in the past. You were too young to remember anyway.”

I lifted my head to see his expression. The grin was gone. Wait, was he serious?

He noticed my curiosity. “Curious, dear?” I moved my head away from him again.

He walked over to the other side of the room. “Oh come on, don’t you want to know what happened to your mother?”

I shivered. I was in doubt, yes, but never had it crossed my mind that the Killjoys had something to do with my mother’s death.

No, Hope, you’re better than this. Don’t believe a word he says!

“Just a couple of years after you were born you were brought to our attention. Now, BLI’s law says that every newborn must be registered and be raised within these walls, which was not the case with you.”

He turned to me again. “We decided to pay your parents a visit and oh, they knew I was coming for you. So, your father had asked Dr. D. for help. He thought Dr. D. would send his people, little did he know we had slaughtered most of them.” Korse smiled.

I clenched my jaw. What was he implying?

“As a result: sadly enough, nobody showed up. Your father put up quite a fight though. You both got away, but there you were: over 14 years later and ready to get delivered to Dr. D… To my advantage.”

I didn’t get shit of it. What did the Killjoys have to do with this?

He continued as if he had read my mind. “He could’ve asked the sons of the spies he was in contact with, you know? Or the spies themselves. Shit, he could’ve prepared an entire army. But he didn’t do anything, because he thought the lives of his Killjoys-to-be were worth more than your mother’s life! They abandoned you before you ever met them, Hope! They cannot be trusted!”

I started shaking and breathing beyond my control. What the fuck does he know!? None of this is true! The handcuffs softly rattled, Korse noticed.

“It was a shame though.” He walked towards the bed. “She tried to protect you.”

I pressed my lips together. Don’t react. He’s messing with you, Hope. He is messing with your head…

“Such a beauty as well.” He got closer. “Too bad she had a hole in her chest and was covered in blood…”

“You ASSHOLE! SHUT THE FUCK UP!” Korse took a step back as I sat up in one rapid movement. He grinned. This was exactly the reaction he wanted.

“You have NO right to talk about my mother like that! You fucking piece of shit! You’re LYING!”

“You wish.”

I was panting and crying now. You wish. That was all he said. With that fucked up grin on his face!

Suddenly I felt a sharp pain. A needle was thrust into my neck. A Drac lowered my body onto the bed.

Korse came closer again. Shit, my vision was getting blurry.

“They cannot be trusted, Hope. They’re vermin. Stop protecting people that hurt you, you foolish girl.” He stroked my cheek. Fuck, I started to feel faint.

“Especially that Poison. He’s supposed to be the great mind behind it all… And when I get him…”

“No, P… Poison…” I mumbled.

Suddenly all sound faded. The last thing I saw was an angry look from Korse, before he stormed off.

Gerard, please be careful.
