Desolation Row

I Can't Forget

“I’m aware of the situation Gerard, but we need to talk.” Patrick said into the receiver, holding the cold plastic of the phone closely to his ear as he listened intently to Gerard’s reply. He said nothing, simply sighing at the other end. Patrick closed his eyes, rubbing his temples impatiently as he tried to figure out a way around this. He understood why Gerard didn’t want to come back. After narrowly escaping an attack on his life and watching the life get squeezed from his brother’s throat, it was a surprise to Patrick that he had even stayed on the phone for this long without hanging up. “I know, Gerard I get that, I wouldn’t want to come back either, but we need to talk. I wouldn’t have called unless it was an emergency, you know as well as I do that I’m not fucking about” He replied, his voice raising as he began to lose patience. The dial tone rang out in his ear; he had hung up. Patrick slammed the phone down, running a hand through his hair as he bit his lip. “Now what” He thought irritably to himself.

He turned and saw Pete leaning against the doorframe, his dark hair a matted mess as his old grey pyjamas hung loose from his body. He rubbed his eyes, stretching his arms as he tried to wake himself up. “Patrick its 10AM who were you on the phone to?” Pete asked half sleepily. He said nothing, pushing past him as he quickly headed for the stairs. He listened as Pete called after him, the worry in his voice tugged at Patrick heart but he refused to turn back. He needed to get out of here, this whole house, his boyfriend; it was all too much for him to deal with at the moment. He couldn’t bear to be around any of it; it was suffocating. He grabbed his leather jacket and ran for the front door. Pete quickly ran after him standing at the front door and watched, a lump quickly rising in his throat, as Patrick ran down the street before disappearing from view. He stood there for a while, his mouth gaping open as he struggled to find the right words, the right feeling to react to what had just happened. His lips trembled slightly as a stab of guilt suddenly washed over him; this was all his fault.

He had driven him away.

******
The sun shone down from the clear blue skies as a gentle breeze blew through the city of London; rustling the trees which stood rather grandly in the nearby park. Patrick quickly walked through Camden High Street, shoving his hands deep into his pockets as he forced his way through the oncoming crowds. As he moved his way down the street, he accidently knocked into a pretty young blonde girl. “Hey watch it!” She yelled. For a moment, he felt his blood run cold. A chill ran down his spine as, for a brief second, he thought she had found him. She had, somehow, come back from the dead to get her revenge on him. As he stared at the girls face, he found her to be just any other girl. He sighed with relief, nervously running a hand through his hair as he quickly apologised to her. She groaned, turning on her heel and walked in the opposite direction. He stood there for a moment, his heart pounding as he watched her walk away. He knew it wasn’t her, the girl looked completely different her and yet he had never felt so afraid in all his life.

The phone in his pocket began to ring. Without thinking, he slid it out of his pocket and answered it, his eyes fixated on road ahead. The girl was now out of sight but he found himself unable to tear his eyes away from the spot in which she once stood. “We can see you; you wanna tell me what the hell that was?” A voice said on the other end of the line. He immediately snapped out of the trance and turned around, wildly looking around, trying to find who was watching him. “Who...who is this?” He stammered, his hands shaking.

“Patrick it’s us, me and Gerard?” Frank replied, sounding confused. Patrick placed a hand on his chest, trying to calm himself down before gave himself a heart attack. “Jesus Christ... sorry, I thought you were someone else” He breathed, rolling his eyes. He heard muffled talking on the other end of the line; a frustrated voice echoed in the background. He tried to listen to what they were saying but his mind was elsewhere. “Gee told you not to come here Pat...” Frank said softly. “No you don’t understand, I need to see you two. Please, I don’t know where you are but please I...” He stopped, closing his eyes. He couldn’t tell them what he knew. Firstly, it was impossible. She had been dead for almost 3 years; he went to the funeral for fuck sake. Secondly, even by some mad possibility that she was still alive, that somehow the hospital made a mistake... how could explain to his friends why she would want such a sickening revenge on them. He ran his fingers through his hair, resting his forehead in the palm of his hand, sighing to himself. But if he knew who this was, if he knew why she was doing this, he would have no choice but to tell them everything. The truth. The whole truth and nothing but the whole goddamn truth.

“I know who’s doing this Frank” He whispered into the receiver. There was noise at the other end, suddenly he found Gerard speaking into his ear; his voice was low and somehow threatening in his ear. “Flat 22, Apartment Block C, right on the corner of the street your on now. You better have a fucking good reason why you didn’t say anything earlier” Gerard growled before handing up the phone. Patrick slid the phone back into the pocket of his jeans and turned back to the direction he had been walking in, as he did, he saw the block of flats towering over the street. He looked up, a shaken grin ghosting the corners of his mouth as he saw Gerard and Frank watching him from the window.

******

The front door to flat 22 opened and Patrick found himself looking into the eyes of Frank Iero. He had changed since they had last met. His hair was now short and he had removed all of his piercings. “The new looks a bit normal for you isn’t it?” Patrick joked; a small grin perched upon his face. Frank smiled the cheesy smile which Patrick had almost missed. “It’s to keep a low profile” he explained, inviting Patrick inside. They walked through a corridor and into a white lounge. Frank sat down on the brown leather sofa, offering Patrick a quick smile before glancing over at Gerard. Gerard was stood at the window, looking down at the world below him. The sunlight shining through touched his poison red hair, almost igniting it with a warm glow. “I see you decided to stay the same then” Patrick said flatly. Gerard turned on his heel, an angry expression on his face as faced him. “We’re not here to talk about me are we” he sneered.

He started towards but Frank quickly stood up, grabbing hold of him and pushing him back. “I told you not to start” Frank said, his voice rising steadily. Gerard struggled in his grip, his eyes wild as he swung at Patrick; narrowly missing him. “He’s a fucking moron! You have any idea of the danger you’re putting us in just by being here? No I bet you don’t because it’s always about you!” Gerard shouted, taking another swing at him. Patrick backed away slightly. Maybe this was a bad idea. Gerard was right; him being here was endangering them as well as him and Pete. “I know, he wasn’t thinking Gee but we have to hear him ok. Ok?” Frank said sternly, grabbing Gerard by the face and forcing him to look him in the eye. He quickly began to calm down, his body relaxing in Frank’s grip. He took a deep breath, Frank smile and turned back to face Patrick. “Take a seat and tell us what the fuck is going on” He said, his voice had grown calm. Patrick nodded, sitting down in the closest chair he could find before facing the couple, who had now sat on the leather sofa.

There was a moment of silence. It was hard to imagine that they had all once been friends; once like a family. But it had been twisted and ripped apart at the seams, leaving everything else to fray and fall apart. Gerard shrugged “Well, who is it then?” He asked, still clearly agitated. Patrick took a deep breath “no going back now” he thought dully. “Its Jane” He replied coldly. His reply was greeted by another moment of silence. Frank’s eyes had grown wide with shock, almost unable to comprehend what he had just heard. Gerard, however, face had twisted into an ugly sneer. “Quit ballshitting Pat, I haven’t got time for it” He threatened, his hand curling into a tight fist. “Think about it, everyone keeps seeing the blonde girl who sounds a lot like her and she’s the only one who has anything against us” He insisted. Gerard opened his mouth to speak but was quickly interrupted by Frank, his pale fingers entwining with his boyfriends. “How? She died years ago?” Frank said, glancing back at Gerard for confirmation. They both stared at Patrick as he cleared his throat. “Pete remembered seeing Mikey in your house Gerard weeks after he died, if he was somehow alive then maybe she is too” He replied. The colour drained from Gerard face, terror filled his eyes as he slowly shook his head. “That’s... that’s impossible” He stammered as Frank wrapped an arm around him, squeezing his hand for support. “You know we wouldn’t lie to you Gee” Patrick sighed. Gerard remained silent, his eyes fixed on the hallway, almost expecting someone to walk in any moment. “Say she is still alive, why would she come after us? We didn’t do anything to her” Frank said, refusing to take his eyes off Gerard.

Patrick shifted uncomfortably in his seat, running a shaking hand through his hair as he cleared his throat. “I’ll tell you everything, but first I think we all need a drink, this is going to take a while” He replied, his voice strained as the memories all came flooding back.
