Oh How Wrong We Were To Think That Immortality Meant Never Dying

Chapter 4

When Frank got back to his room, he turned off the lights and started his mini movie marathon of horror films; he’d been saving up all of the movies involving blood and missing ligaments, so that when he had enough energy, he could stay up late and watch one after the other. Halfway through the second movie, a nurse brought his food and his doctor came in, forcing him to pause the movie when a girl was getting her hand detached by a psycho ex-surgeon.

After his doctor left, he pressed play and continued to watch the movie that was playing, enveloping himself in the death of the dumb blonde that opened the closet door. Frank never did anything interesting and he was determined to watch every movie that his mother had brought, even if that meant getting absolutely no sleep. Around nine his doctor appeared in his doorway; at first Frank worried that something was wrong; why else would his doctor approach him at such an unruly hour. His suspicions were decline when he noticed Gerard standing despondently behind him.

"Sorry to bother you Frank. I know that it's late and all, but would you mind if Gerard watched some movies with you, it's his first day, and he's not coping to well." Gerard stood quietly to the side and was staring intently at the floor, searching for something more interesting than the other man. Frank knew that the first few days in the hospital could be frightening, therefore making refusing Gerard impossible unless he wanted to be labeled as a jackass in his mind.

"Sure," Frank replied. The doctor practically had to drag Gerard into the room and force him into the only chair, as Gerard tried to stay as still as possible, too afraid to get near anyone not in his comfort zone (anyone who wasn’t Mikey). "Hi." Gerard didn't respond, but Frank didn't mind, after all, he didn't talk. "Hope you like horror movies." He sounded as though he would watch it even if Gerard disapproved, but waited for confirmation from Gerard before pressing play; he really didn’t want to scare the guy away, especially since he seemed timid already.

About halfway through, Frank saw Gerard shifting uncomfortably in the cold metal chair. Frank had never understood how his mother could endure sitting on it for an hour while she visited with her son. "Hey, you want to sit up here." Gerard hesitated before staying put, not wanting to over step any boundaries he had unconsciously set. "I don't bite... much." A small smile spread across Gerard's lips at the classic joke; the smile even spread to his eyes, showing that he was justly pleased by the attempt to lighten the mood. "Seriously, there's plenty of room," Frank said while he scooted over to the edge of the bed, leaving enough room, for Gerard’s frail body to join his own. He turned his attention back to the movie, after having given up on Gerard. He soon felt the bed slowly dip as another body joined his and he wore an accomplished expression as he was no longer the only occupant of the bed, and the chair remained empty. A symbolization that they had gotten past the initial awkwardness. Gerard handed a bit of himself over to Frank, earning enough trust to be centimeters apart.

He noticed Gerard getting sleepy and his eyes begin to drop, his head lolled onto the pillow near where Frank’s shoulder resided. He didn't mind if he fell asleep, but he didn't want Gerard to wake up in an unfamiliar bed next to an unfamiliar person, that was a frightening experience. "You sleeping in here?" Gerard seemed a bit frazzled by Frank's question, but Frank quickly added more, so that Gerard didn't think that he was kicking him out. "It's fine with me if you do." Gerard looked relieved and after an hour he relaxed enough to doze off again; this was record time for him to calm down, which just proved that he was beginning to get accustomed to Frank, a complete stranger.

It was oddly comfortable having Gerard next to him, he'd gotten quite lonely after being in the hospital for two years with only nurses and fellow patients (mainly the ones that were too weak to do anything) for company. Frank didn't mind Gerard's silence, it just sparked his curiosity more, motivating him to discover more about the mystery boy that didn’t talk. There were plenty of people that didn't talk, but they usually communicated in some way, but Gerard did nothing to express his thoughts. Frank wondered what Gerard's voice sounded like, and what he thought about, inside that funky, clearly misleading head of his.

Seeing as Gerard was asleep, Frank decided to shut off the TV and did the same, curling into Gerard’s side, and letting his warmth envelope him.

Gerard woke up the next morning to realize that he was in Frank’s bed, which sadly meant that he was still in the hospital. It was still early, only around four, but Gerard didn’t plan on trying to go back to sleep, he already felt wide awake. He didn’t want to sit in Frank’s bed for another five hours waiting for him to wake up; he’d feel too much like a stalker, so he decided to retire to his room.

When he was safely inside the confines of the four walls, he took old of the sketchpad Mikey had brought him and set to work mapping out Frank’s eyes on the paper. He kind of wished that Mikey had bought him a whole set of colored pencil, so that he could incorporate the spark in Frank’s eyes, and how they shone through like the sun.

Mikey notified Gerard that he would not be able to visit due to a school project, so he would be forced to suffer through the whole day alone. He debated whether or not to go to Frank’s room; he decided not to, because he didn’t want to annoy the younger boy so much that he didn’t want to talk to him anymore.

His psychiatrist visited at the same time as the day prior, and he began to wish that he had gone to see Frank, so that he didn’t have to force himself through the session. About halfway through, the door opened and Frank squeezed his way through the small opening that he had left himself after seeing that Gerard wasn’t alone in the room, not wanting to disrupt.

The psychiatrist was the first to notice the younger man’s presence, automatically questioning his company. “Who are you?” He asked Frank, not necessarily upset by his random appearance, but curious as to why he was there.

“Oh, I just came to check on Gerard. I can just come back later.” Frank reached for the handle, but the other man’s words stopped him.

“No, it’s fine. Maybe it’ll help to make Gerard more comfortable.” Gerard wasn’t disappointed when Frank agreed to stay and sat next to Gerard on his bed, but embarrassed that he had to witness Gerard at his weakest moment. “Now Gerard, the nurse notified me that you’ve started eating.” Silence followed, and Gerard laughed inwardly at his comment; he was in fact eating, but he was contradicting his improvements by throwing up afterwards. “That’s a big improvement, you’re already making a big step towards recovery.”

Frank saw a look of hurt pass over Gerard, and could tell that he was not comfortable in front of the psychiatrist. His session didn’t prove to help him, only worry him more; there was nothing Frank could do, so he tried to give Gerard a reassuring smile. “Well, looks like we’re done for today, I’ll see you tomorrow Gerard.” A few more notes than usual were scribbled onto the yellow pad, which probably contributed to Frank’s sudden appearance.

Frank invited Gerard to his room after the psychiatrist had left the room, and Gerard didn’t decline. Gerard joined Frank in his room for more movie watching, and a meal that he allowed to settle in his stomach, because he had no choice with Frank constantly glancing over, and knowing that if he went to the bathroom, Frank would know exactly what he was doing only because the information was so fresh in his mind.

Gerard fell asleep in Frank’s room again, and Frank took Gerard’s early retirement to try to calm himself. He didn’t want to bother Gerard with the pain in his abdomen, and the fact that having Gerard so close made it hotter than usual and almost unbearable. Gerard hadn’t seemed to notice his constant coughing or shortness of breath. And he hoped that it was all just part of his normal symptoms.

Beep-Beep-Beep

Gerard was awoken by an unfamiliar beeping, it sounded nothing like his alarm at home, at first he thought that he was possibly in Mikey's room, but he was sleeping in a bed, and no matter how amazing he was, Gerard always slept on the floor. Then it all began flooding back; he was in the hospital, and he was in Frank's room. At first he assumed that Frank set some sort of alarm to wake him up, or possibly that everyone was woken up by the retched alarm, but that hadn’t been the case the previous day, and from the amount of nurses that crowded the room, he decided that his precious assumptions were, as he thought, incorrect. Gerard was forced from his spot next to Frank, and saw that through all of the commotion, Frank was still in bed asleep; at least he hoped that he was sleeping.

"Sorry Gerard, but you're going to have to go back to your room," he wanted to ask what was going on, but he couldn't. He found himself unable to find words in his throat and remained silent, of course the one time he wishes to speak, he is unable to. A nurse led him back to his room, she notified him that Frank's heartbeat was slowing, but that he would be fine, and he had to go into surgery. She also told him that he was welcome to visit Frank when he was out of surgery.

It all sounded quite frightening to him, but everyone else seemed so calm about it; after all, this was a hospital, and everyone was most likely used to the chaos. He just hoped that Frank would get out of surgery so that he could see him.

When his door opened, he expected to see the same man that had looked after him the previous day, instead he was confronted by an older, balding man. "Hello Gerard, sorry that I couldn't introduce myself yesterday. I'm Dr. Stein. Now, your parents said that you're anorexic, and according to your medical records, you are low on all of your vitamins," this meant nothing to Gerard, if lack of vitamins was a bad thing, then it was all the better to him. "The most sufficient way that we will be able to up your vitamin levels quickly is by injecting zinc into your system." The doctor kept talking, but Gerard's mind had gone blank. Injection meant needles, and he couldn't stand the sight of them, let alone one puncturing his skin; last time he had to be held down, and then fainted when he realized that the needle was a millimeter from coming in contact with his skin. "Gerard?" The doctor questioned him, and Gerard realized that he needed to puke.

He rushed to the bathroom and spilled his guts into the toilet. When he got back, the doctor had the needle in hand and motioned Gerard forward. He shook his furiously and felt tears stain his face as he took a cautious step back. "Come on Gerard, sit down, it'll be better this way." Gerard still refused to move and the doctor had to force him to sit on his bed. He felt himself trembling under the other man’s touch, which only caused the doctor to grip his arm tighter. "It'll hurt less if you don't move." Before waiting for Gerard to calm down, he slid the needle into his arm. Gerard wanted to scream at the force of the fluids being pushed into his blood stream, by now he was bursting with tears, and he squeezed his eyes shut, and kept them closed even after the needle was removed.

"I'll have a nurse bring in some food in a bit." Gerard laid on his bed and wrapped himself in a tight ball. He really didn't like the Dr. Stein, he was too aggressive, but his other patients were probably in worse conditions then Gerard, who needed the aggression.

He didn't even pretend to eat when the food was brought to him, and stayed curled up in his tight ball. It was still untouched by the time Mikey got there.

"Hey Gee," he greeted. When he saw the state that his brother was in, all curled up in a little ball, not even acknowledging his brother, he knew that something was wrong. "What's wrong Gee?" When he got closer, he saw the band aid on his left arm, where the needle had prodded at his once clear skin. "Hey, you're going to be okay." Gerard turned around and Mikey automatically pulled him into his arms, his eyes were dry by now, but they were still red from his previous tears.

"Y-you p-pro-mised that-t you'd nev-er l-let them h-hurt m-me," Gerard stuttered out. It upset Mikey that the doctors had scared Gee so much that he couldn't even talk to him properly. He knew how much Gerard hated needles, and he couldn’t stand the thought of his fearful brother being forced to deal with the fear, because of his lack of talking.

"I know, I won't let it happen again, I promise." Gerard didn't know how he was planning on doing it, but he had promised, and Mikey never broke his promises.

At six the other doctor came in with another needle, and despite the needle in hand, he was relieved that it wasn't Dr. Stein again. When Mikey saw the needle, he automatically stood in front of his brother as protection. "Is there any other way to fix this problem, Gerard doesn't like needles."

"Oh, yes, no problem," he seemed quite understanding about the matter and Mikey was relieved not to have to put up a fight, he'd stood up for his older brother too many times to count. "I'll just have them add some zinc supplements to his normal array of pills, is that okay?" He asked Gerard, which caught him off guard, since usually people only talk to Mikey, and instead, he seemed content on getting Gerard's permission, so he nodded his head. "Okay then, I'll notify your doctor and make the changes. Do you have any more questions?"

Gerard remembered that he had wanted to see Frank, but he didn't know if he'd be able to communicate the thoughts that processed in his mind. "F-frank?" The word was all he was able to get out, and he felt his face flush with embarrassment as soon as the words left his mouth, leaving in the open the only thing that he had managed to keep to himself; the only thing that people couldn’t make fun of him for. He thought he'd that he would regret speaking, but he really wanted to see Frank, and revealing the sound of his voice was worth it, if it meant getting to see if Frank was okay.

"Oh yes, he's in his room if you'd like to see him." He notified and left the room with a soft smile.

"Who's Frank?" Mikey asked.

"He's the guy that showed us back to my room," and of course this was of no significance to Mikey, so he had to explain exactly why he wanted to visit. "I kind of freaked out the other night, and I was brought to his room. We watched a bunch of horror movies. He had to go into surgery this morning, I don't know what happened, but I figured that I'd make sure that he was okay," Mikey was a quite surprised that Gerard had been communicating with the kid, even if no words had been spoken. Gerard must really like this guy, was Mikey's only thought.

"So, are we going to sit here, or are we going to visit Frank?" Mikey spoke up after a few minutes of silence. Gerard seemed shocked that Mikey was willing to check on Frank with him, but took up the offer, because he was not going to be denied the opportunity to make sure that he was safe. He really had no information on what had happened that landed Frank in surgery, and he was curious as to the reason.

"Oh, yeah!"

Notes

Wow that took a while. It's like 6 pages now, compared to the 3 pages it was before. I think the last section of it could've been better, but over all, I'm pretty proud of this chapter. Now to work on chapter 5! Hopefully it'll be up sometime next week.
