The Ghost of You

Five

Michael James Way.

He was in a medically induced coma. I could’ve woke him, but I wasn’t allowed.

I tried to ignore it, but he was in the corner of the room, haunting me. Was I imagining it? Was I hallucinating? Was I crazy?

I spent almost the whole day tending to and feeding the other patients. Everyone was resting now, their stomachs filled and their pains subsided.

I went back to Michael’s side when I finally had a break. He was still frozen, the IV dripping into his veins.

I asked the doctor when he would come to and they said they would try to bring him back tomorrow, see how much he remembered.

I was getting ready to close up when I heard arguing from down the hall. I peaked my head outside of the door, there was someone causing a ruckus.

“Sir, visiting hours are over! You need to leave before I call security!” I heard one of the nurses shout very clearly.

I heard him coming down the hall, his feet stomping and the nurse shouting after him. I backed up into the room, closing the door behind me, my heart racing. I solemnly hope the room he’s looking for isn’t mine.

Within a few seconds I heard the banging from behind me.

Great.

I gently slid the door open and he bursted through, causing me to fall on my behind.

“Asshole!” I snapped.

He didn’t turn to look at me and instead ran to the side of a bed, Michael’s bed.

“Mikey!” He cried, holding his limp hand.

“Nurse, nurse!” He looked around the room, his lips quivering.

“Down here.” I groaned, raising a hand.

He rushed to my side, helping me up. His hands darted to my shoulders and he shook me, “Is he okay?! Will he wake up?! Will he remember me?!” he blurted.

“Calm down sir, shhh.” I removed his shaking hands from my shoulders.
My jaw nearly fell off my face. It was the singer from my first dream, the actual brother, slicked black hair.

“DON’T TELL ME TO CALM DOW-“

“I need you to, okay? If you don’t, security will come and take you away. There are other patients here that need their rest.” I frowned. He was going to yell again but I smacked his forehead.

“Okay. Please, just tell me something.” He lowered his voice.

I looked around the room to see if anyone was awake before grabbing his hand and leading him back to Michael’s bed. I drew out the bed curtain, giving us some privacy.

“He was shot, in the head. Barely fractured his skull, he’s going to make it though. If you come a little bit later tomorrow he should be awake, but I can’t tell you how much he will remember. It’s unpredictable at this point.” I told the man.

“Can’t I stay with him tonight?” He pleaded.

“No sir, I’m sorry. You’ll have to come back tomorrow.”

“Where will I go?! I just flew here from the states!” He cried.

“How did you get on base?”

“I’m in the navy. A fleet admiral, and I have permission to bring him back, but when I got here no one would let me even see him.” He sighed.

“You can stay in the barracks tonight.” I suggested.

“What barracks? I know no one here!” He dragged a hand down his face.

“Stay with me, it’s fine.”

“Why are you so nice, nurse? Do you know Mikey?” He squinted his eyes at me.

“I don’t know. That’s what I’m trying to find out.” I mumbled.

“Huh?”

“I don’t know. Do you think we know each other?” I tilted my head in confusion.

“How the fuck am I supposed to know lady?” He gave me an exasperated look.

“I mean, I know him but I’ve never met him before. It’s complicated. Have I met you before?” I turned to him.

“No. I’ve never seen you before in my life.” He shook his head.

“Whatever, what’s your name anyways?” I scratched my forehead.

“Gerard.” He replied.

“Alright, Gerard. Have you had dinner yet?”

“No.”

“Well, head down to the mess hall and I’ll meet you there in a little bit. Mikey will be fine, I promise.” I put a hand on his shoulder.

“Thanks… and your name?” He blinked.

“Adele.”

“Really?” He squinted his eyes.

“Yeah.”

“It’s funny, your face and that name, they match up. Feels like deja vu, weird.” He shrugged.

“Right… I’ll see you later Gerard.” I nodded.
