Don't Stand So Close To Me

Chapter Thirty Three

“Mom- No, that’s not the case I swear.” I pinched the bridge of my nose in a stressful manner.

“You expect me to believe, you’ve done something illegal, and now you have to go on the run with your boyfriend? You are sooo grounded.” She scoffed.

“Mom… I can’t tell you what we did I really can’t. They were accidents, but I can’t tell you. And we have to go, now.”

“Did you even think once while you were doing this, that this is Laura’s son? Did you have any consideration for the both of us? What if you got him in trouble?” She shook her head.

“Scuse’ me?” Frank furrowed his eyebrows.

“Yeah that’s right Laura is your Mother, and my little deceiving daughter knew the entire time.” She grimaced.

“Mom! This isn’t the time for this!” I screamed.

“Frank, go wait in the car, please.” I said to him.

“Uh… yeah, hurry up.” He shook his head in confusion and walked towards the door, bags in hand.

Before leaving he tossed my Mom his house keys.

“You can stay here for as long as you want.” Then he was out.

“Don’t you do this Lana, you’re going to regret it for the rest of your life.” Her jaw clenched, looking back to me.

“Mom, I need to show you something.” I took a deep breath and lifted my shirt, revealing the ugly pink scar on my side from the bullet wound months back.

“I was shot. We are in trouble Mom. And I’ll get shot again if you don’t let me leave right now. We need to go into hiding until it’s safe.”

“Wh-“ Her jaw dropped, fear filling her eyes.

“I love you Mom, now please, don’t involve the law or you’ll be endangering us gravely.” I kissed her on the cheek and ran towards the door. She screamed my name and my head shot back.

“Every week. I want an email every week. Full in detail. I cant stop you but I can protect you. The cops will know nothing.” She looked to the floor in anguish.

“Thank you,” I mouthed to her, tears filling my eyes as I sprinted out the door.

-

The second I got into the car Frank pulled out of the driveway and sped down the street.

He was silent, and my hands were trembling.

“Frank-“ I started.

“No. I don’t want to hear about it. I don’t care. Now is not the time.” He stared straight on.

I shut up, that was reason enough for me to shut up. I couldn’t say anything. My lies caught up with me in one grand finale of shit hitting the fan.

I thought for a minute, trying to clear my head enough to say something reasonable.

“Did you talk to Gerard?” I said quietly.

“Yeah.” He replied.

“Is everything alright?”

“He’s waiting for us at Richmond park, bags packed. When he heard about your Mom he picked up and left.”

“Okay.”

“Where are we going?” I added.

“I don’t know. Far.”

-

Maryland.

That’s where we ended up. We drove all day and all night, well Frank and Gerard drove, and we were in Maryland. It was all good until the sun rose again and no one could keep their eyes open.

We stopped at a small cheap motel, dragging our bags across the parking lot when a man approached us.

“Drop your shit. Give me your money.” He pulled a knife out of his back pocket.

I sighed in frustration, sleep coaxing me to not care about a single thing but getting inside and laying on a bed.

Gerard rolled his eyes and pulled out a gun from his messenger bag, pointing it directly at the man’s forehead.

“Get the fuck out of here.”

The man’s eyes nearly popped out of his head and he scrammed before Gerard could even put the gun back.

“Why do you have that?” My voice was barely above a whisper.

“Desperate times call for desperate measures.” He sighed.

“Do you just… carry those things on you all the time?” I squinted my tired eyes at him.

“Kind of.”

“Remind me again why I’m supposed to believe you’re just an art teacher in a small vacant city like Harvey Cedars?”

Gerard stared at the ground in a daze.

“Les just go sleerp.” His words slurred.

“Yah. Fuck this.” I yawned and picked my bags back up.

-

We slept for what seemed like an eternity, a whole week at the very least.

Frank and I had our own room but we were too tired to even look at each other. Plus things were still awkward.

Well at least that was what I thought.

When I woke up his head was resting on my chest, his arms wrapped around my back.

I raised a hand and combed my fingers through his hair, pulling him closer.

“Lana,” He sighed into my neck.

“Yes love?” I said softly.

“Will you marry me?”
