I'll Be Your Savior If You'll Be Mine
Chapter 3
I dashed through the hallways. They were empty, which is how I knew I was late, yet again. My backpack was loudly hitting against my side with each step I took. In Queen of Peace we had alternating schedules depending on the day. Today was "B" day, which was my least favorite day. I started out the day with gym. It really didn't matter what three classes came after gym, it would still be the inferior day, because it started with that awful class.
I finally reached the locker room, there were a few girls still changing, which signaled I wasn't too late, and I should probably still hurry while dressing to see if I can arrive to roll call on time. I quickly spun the dial for my gym locker and pulled out my baggy white t-shirt and dark blue gym shorts. I kicked my shoes off and quickly changed. I tucked the hair behind my ear and jogged to the gymnasium that was across the hall from the girls locker room.
"Hey," I heard someone call. I looked over to see Frank. He was wearing almost the same outfit as me, he was removing the earbuds from his ears.
"Oh, hi." I said, not really wanting to linger in the hall. He sensed this and ran to meet up with me. We started walking to class together.
"Did you hear back from Pathway?" He asked, quizzing me about my job hunt.
"No, not yet. It's only been a day though, so I'm not too worried."
"Yeah, I guess. I told my boss that he should hire you. I don't know if he trusts my opinion, but I have done all I can." He gave me a smile.
"Thanks, I appreciate it." I pushed open the heavy door leading into the gym.
"God, I hate this class." Frank mumbled. I just nodded my head in agreement. The other students were lined up against a wall. They were probably already picking teams for the flag football game we were playing today.
"Iero, Isles!" Coach Porter yelled. "You're both late! 2 laps around the gym!" I scrunched my nose and Frank groaned. He shoved his earbuds back into his ears and started to jog. I followed Frank's example, I ran significantly slower than him which was embarrassing, but I tried not to think about it.
When we finished our laps we were thrown into the game. I strapped on a yellow belt with two flags hanging down from them, Frank got a red belt. I lingered in the back, mostly trying to avoid any chance of me getting hit by the ball. It was working well. I couldn't help but notice Frank doing the same. We both kept glancing at each other. Part of me wanted to smile, but I stopped myself.
"Hey, girlie!" Someone yelled at me, I looked around, only to see the football flying towards me. I didn't have much time to react, but luckily I reacted correctly. I caught the football, I stood still for a second. What do I do now? Players from the other team dashed towards me. I ran quickly, not really sure how to even hold the football correctly. I actually made it down the field pretty far until I felt someone tug on my side. I stopped running and turned to see a smirking Frank holding my flag in his hand.
"Hey, that was my moment." I said, trying to catch my breath. "I was going to score a touchdown."
"Sorry, maybe next time." He smiled as I threw the ball to Coach Porter.
"I was going to be offered a spot on the football team. You ruined that shot, thanks." I said sarcastically, he laughed. I blushed and smiled, we both turned and returned to our normal spots in the back, trying to be ignored.
I tucked in my shirt and zipped up my skirt. I always hated putting my uniform back on, I didn't really like wearing skirts. I quickly knotted the tie around my neck and left for the gymnasium for the second roll call, to make sure we didn't ditch class early. I stood next to Frank as we waited for Coach Porter to come and take roll. Frank let out a laugh, I glanced over to him, he was looking at me. I immediately felt self conscious.
"What?" I asked.
"You never tie your ties right." I looked down at the jumbled mess around my neck. I just looked back up at him.
"Here," he said as he untied it quickly. My heart was pounding loudly and I could feel myself blushing. He put the tie around his neck and tied it, making it loose so it could fit over my head. He tightened it for me and smiled.
"There you go." He said with a smile.
"Thank you," I mumbled, smiling back.
