Life isn't fair
Chapter 12
Night has fallen at the castle. The humans are fast asleep for the most part. Some find they are restless here as there is nothing left for them but to lurk about the castle desperately searching for the coveted freedom.
Mike is off on his own. He has always been quiet and reserved. He has ventured far beyond where the others do not dare to go though. He has made his way down to the dungeon of sorts. The lowest level of the building hides untold secrets. Mike lays his tired eyes upon the dust that lay all over the walls and floors of the small inhabited area. He is trying to see through the blanket of darkness around him. He is watching cautiously as he sees a gleaming light a few feet ahead of him. On instinct alone he knows that he must go to it. He wonders as to what must be his fate. He softly touches the light awaiting his unseen future. As the light surrounds him the scene changes very little. The darkness is back but the dust has not settled in this basement. A room he recalls so well. A torture that he should not forget. He sees his worst fear lying before him on the floor. He sees billions of children he was unable to save. They took their own lives venturing between slit wrist and small bullet holes in their temples. His heart weeps with the ache this scene of mass murder has scared him with. He whispers,
"I know I can't save everyone, but I will always try." The scene fades before his very eyes like a movies scene. The torture is gone. He sees no dead children but his own home. He is laying in his bed beside his beloved wife. He smiles kisses her head and turns to the night stand. He finds a piece of paper and a pen. He scribbles onto the paper, 'never give up. someone might need you more than you think.'
The castle is silent now. No one wanders here or there, but the sun does begin to stir which shall soon wake sleeping occupants. Brendon has risen early this morning though. He plans to get out today if he can. He knows that Ryan needs him, but he longs for Sarah as well. He begins to venture. As he enters the hall he sees a door on the opposite side that would not normally be there. He opens it hoping to find his rapture of sorts. Inside the door he sees the rain falling. A downpour is in front of him. He steps in despite the high levels of water. He sees something farther up, but his eyesight is blurred. He presses on. He reaches the figure which seems to be a huddled mass. In a puddle on the floor lay a thin body sobbing in the rain. Brendon lays his hand on the shoulder of the mass. He whispered,
"How can I help you poor soul." The mass said nothing. It rolled over to look up at him. Brendon whispered, "Ryan?"
Ryan's eyes were darker than normal. There was no glimmer of hope like typically Brendon had found. Even in the darkest of times Ryan still had a bit of hope for the future. This Ryan had long sense lost hope and the black eyes made it clear as day.
"Brendon, is this the end? The real end?" Ryan sobbed.
"What do you mean the end?" Brendon whispered almost inaudible.
"I don't want to die Brendon. I don't want to die with the band." Brendon finally understood something. Ryan had been here twice before he had said. Once as a child and as a young adult. He could never remember because he was never fully healed, but here lay one of the many methods for helping Ryan that had somehow turned to helping Brendon's. He was not happy to see this sad depressed Ryan and it broke his heart.
"Ryan no matter what know that I was always your friend, and I always loved you." Brendon sighed. He was expecting something to happen now like the others. The door did not change though. Had he not fulfilled the requirement? He wished he had the real Ryan here. Real Ryan walked into the open door groggy and confused. He whispered,
"Bren, why are you in here?"
"Ryan, why didn't you tell me you felt unloved, forgotten, and worst of all dead?" Brendon felt the prick of tears.
"Because you had Sarah you didn't care. No one did. I was alone, for the last time in my life. I vowed to never sink like that again, but of course I did. I got into hard drugs and here I am. Trust me I knew why I was here, but why leave when I will always just come back because I am such a monumental failure." Ryan sobbed in the rain that just did not cease.
"Ryan I love you and I would never believe that. You aren't a failure, don't ever say that again." Brendon hugged Ryan tightly. He whispered, "I will always love you."
The boys saw a change. They were no longer in the rain but dry in a bright park. The sun was shinning down and this looked like the beginning of something wonderful for both the guys.
Frank stirred as the sun came over the horizon. He woke Gerard who looked angry. Gerard sighed once again. He stood up with out a word uttered to his companion. They are growing restless with each other. Ray watched as Gerard walked out of the room. He caught up to him,
"He Gerard, how are you?"
"As good as one can be in this prison." Gerard huffed.
"Yeah, I just wanted to make sure you were alright and not going insane." Ray was sympathetic.
"Yeah Ray, thanks for worrying about me."
"What are friends for?"
Humans are strange creatures. Each has their own story to write everyday, yet they waste so much time on meaningless things. They strive for perfection when everything they need is destined to be found easily. Humans over complicate and miss what amazingly beautiful things lie within and in front of them. "Life is frittered away by detail. Simplify, simplify, simplify."- Henry David Theuro.
