Mental Breakdowns
Lulu's pov.
My first Friday at Belleville High had just ended. School had gotten out, so the boys and I were on our way to Gee and Mikey's house.
Bob had almost all of his classes with me, Gee and Frankie. There had been no more incidents since Monday, and all of the preppy girls got the hint to leave me alone. As I got to know the guys better, I noticed that Frank and Gee were TOTALLY crushing on each other. I had finally decided that something had to be done to change the crushing into dating.
We got to the Way house hold. We threw our stuff into Gee's room and got comfy. I volunteered to go with Gee to get some snacks while the other boys set up.
"So Gee, what's with you and Frankie?"
"Uh, what are you talking about?" His face went red as he rummaged through the fridge.
“Oh, come on! You know exactly what I’m talking about! Someone has a crush!” I laughed as I leaned against the counter.
“No I don’t! Even if I did, it’s not like I could do anything about it.”
“You’re kidding, right? Have you seen the way he looks at you? He so has a crush on you. You have to ask him out.”
Gee whipped around and stared at me in shock. “Are you kidding me? I can’t just ask out my best friend. I’d kill our friendship FOR-EV-ER!”
“So you do like him!” I felt triumphant when Gee realized he let his feelings slip.
“Okay, fine! I like him. But I can’t. I’m scared.” He whispered the last part.
I walked forward and let Gee rest his head on my shoulder, even though he had lean down to do so. “What are you scared of, hun?”
“I’m scared of getting rejected. I’m scared he’ll hate me.”
“Now why would he hate you? Even if he didn’t want to date you, he would never hate you.”
He started to sob. “What should I do? I’ve never been in a relationship before.”
I rubbed small circles on his back and pulled him close to me. “I’ve never been in one either, but I think you should go with your heart. Ask him out. It’s better if you ask him and maybe get rejected than to have never asked him at all.”
“I guess. You’re right. I’ll ask him right now.” Gee’s breathing calmed. I hugged him tightly.
“I’m so proud of you, Gee. Come on, let’s go back down.” We loaded our arms with snacks and drinks and we went down stairs.
The guys looked up as Gee and I entered the room.We passed around the stuff, but they noticed that Gee’s eyes were red. Mikey was the first to bring it up.
“Gee, why are your eyes red? Are you alright?”
“Mikey, I’m fine. Don’t worry about me. Frank, can I talk to you upstairs?”
Frank looked confused but stood up. “Sure.”
Gee and Frank walked upstairs, closing the door behind them. I sat down on Gee’s bed, but I could feel Bob, Mikey and Ray’s eyes on me. “I’ll tell you right now, I know what’s going on, but I’m not saying.” The boys looked away as a silence filled the room. But soon, we heard feet on the stairs. Gee kicked open the door and walked in while carrying Frank bridal style. Gee put him down and kissed Frank lightly on his lips. Frank smiled and kissed back.
“OHMYGODYOUTWOAREADORABLETOGETHER!!!!” I jumped off the bed and pulled both of them into a hug.
“Thank you so much for telling me to do this, Lulu.” Gee placed a kiss on the top of my head.
“What’s going on?” Ray asked from the couch.
Gee interlocked his and Frankie’s fingers and looked at Frank when he responded. “Frankie is official my boyfriend.”
Mikey squealed and jumped up to give them a hug. “Finally! I’m so glad you two are together. I thought this would never happen.”
We were all sitting around, watching some horror movie when my phone buzzed. I looked at the caller i.d. It was my dad. “F**k.” I whispered. Unfortunately, Bob heard me.
“Whoa, Lulu, when did you start swearing?”
“My whole life. I’ll be right back.” I walked up the stairs and answered my cell.
“What’s up Dad?”
“Lulu, where are you?” Shit. He sounded angry.
“I’m at my friends’ house. Mom said for me to be back by 6:00. Why do you care?”
“Because I’m your father. Now who are these people anyways?”
“Uhg! They’re just some guys from school!” As soon as I said ‘guys’, I knew I was dead.
“What?!” His voice shook with rage. “You’re hanging out with a group of boys? They could do anything to you!”
“Will you calm down? Their mom is here. It’s not like they’re gonna attack me. They’re really nice.”
“That’s what you think! You better get your ass back home right now!” He hung up without letting me respond.
I knew that it would happen eventually. My new life was going a little too smoothly and now it all was about to come crashing down. I leaned back against the wall and slid down it. I took deep breaths to keep the sobs within, but a few tears fell anyways. I got up and walked back down to Gee’s room. The guys looked at me as I walked. Mikey and Bob got up and walked to me. They both pulled me into one big hug, as if they knew something was wrong. “Thank you, but I have to go. I’ll talk to later.” Gee came over with my bag. He gave me hug. “Leave your phone on. I might need to call you.”
“Of course hun. I’ll be here for you.” Gee grabbed my hand and pulled me up the stairs behind him. At the front door he gave me a kiss on the forehead. I ran down his stairs and down the block.
When I got home, my dad was waiting. “What the hell were thinking, hanging out with a bunch of crazy boys? Were you trying to become a slut?”
“You know I would never even think of becoming that. Don’t put me any lower than you already do!”
“You can never hang out with those boys again.” My dad was talking in a low voice, right in my face. I turned to walk to my room.
“You can’t tell me what to do. I only respond to Mom, and you know that already.” He grabbed my arm and spun me around so I was facing him.
“Well I think it’s time that changes.” My dad pulled back his arm and hit me across the face. I kicked him the stomach and ran to my room.
I locked the door and ran upstairs. I curled up on my bed and finally allowed myself to cry. I pulled out my phone. My mom was on a trip with work, but I hoped she would answer. I dialed her number and crossed my fingers.
“Hello? Lulu, what wrong?”
“Um, Mom, I think Dad’s drunk. He got all mad that I was hanging out with my friends. He said I shouldn’t hang out with boys!”
“Calm down sweetie. I let you go over there, don’t blame yourself.”
“But I’m scared, Mom. Can I stay over at my friend’s house for the weekend? Dad’s going crazy.”
“Of course. I’m sorry I’m not there with you. As soon as he leaves you can go.”
“Okay. Thanks Mom. I’ll see you soon.”
“I’m so sorry honey. Call me if you need anything. I love you.”
“I love you too Mom.” I hung up.
I could still hear my dad down stairs. I shoved my head under my pillow and screamed. I screamed as loud as possible. I felt done with everything. I have a weird way with coping. Some cut, I bite. I pulled my arm in front of my mouth and bit down, hard. I looked at the bite makes but saw blood. I promised myself I would never draw blood. I panicked. I’ve had panic attacks before, but I never told anyone about them.
I didn’t know what else to do, so I pulled out my phone and dialed Gerard’s number.
“Lulu, is there something wrong?”
“Yeah, Gee. I need to come over. Can I stay the weekend?” My voice cracked so many times, I was surprised he understood me.
“Of course. But can you tell me what’s happening?”
“Not right now. I just need to get out. Are the rest of the guys over still?” I was rushing around my room filling a duffel bag.
“Yeah. Do you want them here?”
“Yes, please. I need you guys, and you all need to know more about me.”
“Calm down, Lu. When are you coming?”
“Right now. See you soon.” I hung up and pulled out a pad of sticky notes. I wrote a note to my dad on one and quickly stuck it on the outside of my door. I opened my window and jumped down. I took off towards Gee’s.
