The Only Exception (Lindsey and Gerard Way fan-fiction)

Chapter 3: I Got Your Back

Lindsey P.O.V.

Gerard and I walked to Sister Kate's class.

"Sister Kate can be nice, but when it comes to math she is a different person." I explain to Gerard.

"In a good way or in a bad way?" Gerard sort of raises his voice up a little bit.

"Depending on what type of person you are. If you do your best in the class then you're on her good side. But be that one kid who slacks off in her class she will not take your shit." I said.

"I'm going to stay on her good side." Gerard says.

"Yeah. By the way, when we have finals , students with good grades get two passes to skip whatever final test they don't want to do. And if you have an A plus in a class then you don't take the finals." I said.

"Really? That seems like a good deal." Gerard said.

"Yeah-" Just as I was about to say something, Frank had tackled me to the floor again. I've grown used to the tackles that Frank gives me. He's been tackling me every since freshman year.

"Frank..." I whined. "Why?"

"Just because we're juniors does not means I will stop tackling you!" Frank said as he sat on top of me. I was laying stomach down so it doesn't look weird.

"Frank, get off of me." I said. He got off of me and helps me up. We don't have to think of doing it, it's like a reflex now.

"Are you okay?" Gerard asked.

"Yeah! He does this every single day to me and our friends." I said.

"Yep! And you need a hug!" Frank said to Gerard and pulled him in for a big bear hug.

Gerard looks like he wasn't used to people giving him a hug. It hurts me a little bit how scared he was about the hug. I hate to see him so scared. He was like a little kid who had lost his mother in a supermarket and I just really want to give him a hug.

"Well, gotta go! I have algebra 2 next! Have fun at pre-calculus!" Frank said and ran to Mr. Jones class, which was next to Sister Kate's.

"Algebra 2?" Gerard asked.

"He failed it last year." I said.

"Really? Is he a slow learner?" Gerard whispered.

"No. Last year the teacher that taught the other half of the sophomores was a horrible teacher. Everybody ended up failing her class by the end of the semester and the school fired her." I said.

"What did they do for half of the school year?" Gerard stuttered and took his time to say his sentence.

"Mr. Jones and Mr. Rockwell, the senior math teacher, started to teach algebra 2 to the ones who failed." I said.

"So now...?"

"Now they have to finish algebra 2 and next semester they'll have pre-calculus." I said.

We both walked into Sister Kate's class. Sister Kate's class is really colorful. She had drawings up that her nephews and nieces had done, had little posters about math and then about God and Jesus.

There were about twenty desk for the students. Sister Kate was by her desk which was at the back corner.

"Hey Sister Kate." I greeted to her.

"Hello Lindsey and Gerard." Sister Kate smiled. "Gerard you may sit next to Lindsey if you want."

I showed Gerard where I sat and he took the seat next to me.

"So, you and your brother are in the same grade, right?" I asked.

"Yeah." He said.

"Twins?"

"No, we're just nine months apart. He's older though." Gerard said.

"Oh, Irish twin just like my older brothers." I smiled.

"You have brothers?" Gerard asked.

"Yeah. They're seniors. I have a younger sister and a younger brother." I told him.

"You have a bigger family than mine. My family is just my mom, Mikey, and me." He said. His eyes looked as if the sparkle in them had faded away.

I didn't ask any questions about his family. Especially ones that involve the word 'dad' in them.

"Lindsey!!!" A cheerful shout came from the door. I knew who this was, Gerard was a little startle by the sudden voice.

I turned around and stood up to see my other best friend, Big Tommy.

"Big Tommy!" I said as Big Tommy pulled me in for a massive bear hug.

Big Tommy's real name is Thomas Hernandez. He's a senior like my brothers and plays in the football team. He's really tall and is very buff, which is why he got the name Big Tommy. You may think he is one of those though guys just by looking on the outside, but he is the sweetest giant you'll ever meet. Plus, he likes to give out hugs a lot.

"Where were you Friday? I missed you at the football game." Big Tommy said sadly as he let me go.

"I went to go see Green Day in New York." I said.

"Did you have fun?" Big Tommy asked cheerfully. He knew I was a big fan of Green Day and knew that I wanted to see them since forever.

"Amazing!" I smiled.

Big Tommy smiled. "Aw. Who did you went with? I know your mother and father would never let you go to a concert alone." He said.

"Turtle. Vlad was busy." I said.

"Glad you had fun." He said.

"I want to introduce you to someone." I said as I pulled Big Tommy over to where my seat was and where Gerard sat.

"Big Tommy this is Gerard Way. Gerard this is Big Tommy." I smiled.

"Hi, Big Tommy." Gerard began and started to stutter.

"Hello Gerard Way! I am Thomas Hernandez but call me Big Tommy!" Big Tommy said with a smile on his face. He still has his baby face.

"Nice to meet you." Gerard gave a shy smile.

"Don't need to be shy, Gerard. I'm nice... am I nice Lindsey?" Big Tommy asked. Big Tommy was just as shy as Gerard, but Big Tommy had a different way of showing it. Instead of having a quiet voice and playing with fingers, he would actually be excited instead.

"He's the nicest giant ever!" I smiled.

Gerard seemed to be less shy around Big Tommy, probably because he took my word that Big Tommy is nice (which is true).

"Yay! But yeah, I'm a nice giant." Big Tommy smiled.

The bell rang and Big Tommy frowned. "Aw man. Nice to meet you Gerard! I hope I see you in another one of my classes." Big Tommy said and walked to his desk, which was on the other side of the room.

"How do you like it so far, Gerard?" I asked him at lunch time.

"Everyone seems nice. Is the whole school like that?" Gerard asked.

"Not the whole school. Like Rena, the girl in Foundation, said, we do have your typical assholes, but if you don't talk to them they won't talk to you. Simple as that." I said.

"Okay." Gerard said. He was looking around the room.

"Who are you looking for?" I asked.

"Mikey. He said we have lunch together." Gerard said.

"Found him." I said as I saw Mikey walking by the microwaves, looking around. I waved for him to come over. I saw Frank walk by his side and pointed to us.

"Hello Gerard, hello my bitch."

"Frank!"

"Sorry, Lindsey." He sheepishly smiled.

"Whatever, hoe." I smiled.

"Psh. Me a hoe?" He laughed.

"Yes, man-whore." I playfully said.

"Hey guys!" Simon Lopez smiled and sat next to Mikey. "Hello. You guys must be new. I'm Simon Lopez. Nice to meet you." She said as she first shoot Mikey's hand, then Gerard who was sitting across from Mikey and next to me.

Simon was a junior. She came to the United State when she was in fifth grade. Also, Simon is kind of like the peace maker between Frank and I when we have our stupid arguments.

"I-I'm Mikey a-and this is my brother, Gerard." Mikey stuttered. Simon smiled and nodded.

"What are you guys arguing about?" Simon asked Frank and I.

"She called me a man-whore!" Frank played innocent.

"Don't act innocent, Frank. You called me a bitch when I told you not to." I pointed out.

"Frank, when Lindsey says not to call her a bitch, don't call her that." Simon sighed and said in monotone.

"But she called me a man-whore!" Frank clapped his hands at every syllable in the sentence.

"You are one." Simon copied Frank.

"Hurtful." Frank said. "But at least I'm not in the single-since-birth club." Frank smirked.

"Frank, kissing a girl because you were dared does not count." I rolled my eyes.

"How do you know I haven't went out with anybody." Frank smirked.

I opened my mouth to say something but ended up not saying anything at all. A couple of seconds later I muttered a 'whatever' to Frank.

"Is this how is like everyday?" Mikey asked Simon.

"Sadly. Welcome to my high school life." Simon said and looked at Mikey. I saw Mikey give a small blush and gave a small smile.

"Pts." Frank whispered to me. "I think someone likes Simon."

"Aw. I think it's cute." I whispered to Frank.

"Hey, does Jennifer and Steve have second lunch today?" Simon asked.

"No. They have third lunch. Remember, it's not a block day until Wednesday." I said.

"I've been going to this school since freshman and I still forget about block days." Simon muttered. "So Mikey and Gerard, what grade are you in?" Simon asked.

"We're both juniors." Mikey said.

"Twins like the Spangler's," Simon asked.

"No, we're nine months apart from each other." Mikey said.

"Oh. So you guys are born the same year?" Simon asked.

"Yeah." Mikey said and Gerard nodded.

"You don't talk much, do you." Simon said to Gerard. He just nodded.

"Okay. Hey, I heard you went to go see Green Day." Simon began.

The rest of lunch we talked about Green Day and somehow ended up talking about vegetables we disliked the most. Simon said she only liked broccoli when salt and lime was added. I don't blame her, I tried it before because she once made some for me and it was good. Frank said he hated anything green and not Green Day. Of course this is the same guy who ate all of his Halloween candy in the morning because he goes out to trick-or-treat with his younger cousins, so I wasn't surprise with his answer.

Mikey and Gerard stayed quiet. Every time we changed subject I would try to include them in the conversation. They'll say a few words and then will remain quiet.

Theology was next after lunch. It was our second to last hour. I was kind of upset when I saw that on my schedule because I was used to having theology before lunch or in the morning when I never have the 2:30 feeling.

Mikey had theology with us. I hope it made Gerard a little safer now that he had a class with his brother. I honestly wondered what was going on in his mind, and what made him believe that this world was ugly.

Ray Ray had this class with me, even though he was a senior. But I guess the seniors and juniors were basically learning the same thing in theology. We already studied the Old Testament during freshman year and studied the New Testament during sophomore year. I guess what we really do is just sum up the whole Bible.

"Do you boys want to introduce yourselves?" Sister Mary asked the brothers.

"I don't want to... do you Gerard?" Mikey asked Gerard and he shook his head.

"That's alright." Sister Mary smiled at them. "Lindsey, you sit in the back corner, right?" She asked me.

"Yeah."

"You guys can sit next to her." Sister Mary said. In this period there was only seven of us, including Mikey and Gerard.

The bell rang and Sister Mary walked up to the smart board. Ray helped Sister Mary put on the Abraham movie on the laptop.

"Okay, while Ray is putting on the movie, get out your worksheet for the questions. Mikey, Gerard, I need to give you one." Sister Mary said as she walked to her desk and started looking for the papers.

"It's up, Sister Mary. All you have to do is press play." Ray said.

"Thank you Ray." Sister Mary said and then turned around to us. "I don't think I have anymore copies. I'll print them out for you tomorrow. For now just enjoy the movie." Sister Mary said.

I showed them where I sat. Gerard took the seat next to mine and Mikey took the seat next to Gerard. Ray walked to his seat, which happens to be in front of mine. He turns around.

"Hey Z. How was the concert?" Ray asked me.

I smiled and laughed. "You know. You were there too!" I said. Ray just chuckled.

"Hey, you're Gerard." Ray said to Gerard.

"Yeah."

"Glad you decided to come." Ray smiled. "And you must be Mikey. I'm Ray." Ray introduced himself to Mikey.

"I'm Mikey." He said.

"Okay. Where did we stop?" Sister Mary asked.

"The part where Sarai asks Hagar to lay with Abram." Sarah Monroe said. Sarah is my neighbor and also my fellow teammate in volleyball. We're best friends but theology is the only class we have together, until next semester that is.

While Sister Mary looked for the scene, Sarah walked over to my desk.

"I'm hungry, peasant. Go get me food." Sarah said.

"Don't be a princess, Sarah." I smiled.

Sarah chuckled. "No but really, I'm hungry." Sarah said.

"We just came back from lunch, Sarah." I said.

"I have first lunch. It doesn't count." Sarah cried.

"Yes it does. Now go sit down before I make you." I smiled.

"Whatever you wish, Bass Princess." Sarah said and bowed before walking to her desk.

"Says Sarah." I said, causing Ray to laugh.

"You play the bass guitar?" Mikey asked.

"Yeah. I was going to pick the guitar but it was hard for me since I do have small fingers. So I chose the bass guitar." I said.

"Mikey knows how to play the bass." Gerard said.

"Really. We should jam out some time." I said.

Sister Mary manage to play the movie. Five minutes into the movie, I fell asleep. All I remembered in the movie was the drama between Sarai and Hagar.

I woke up five minutes before the bell rang because Gerard had shaken me awake.

"We have five minutes left." He whispered to me. I noticed I was using my sweater as a pillow, but there was another sweater wrapped around me like a blanket.

"Oh, thanks." I said quietly and sat up. Gerard took the sweater off and started to put it on. I also put on my sweater since I was cold. The bell rang and we walked to our next period, which was drama.

I got my stuff ready to leave to go home. Volleyball practice was canceled today, which meant I was going home early. Sadly, Vlad had soccer practice after school and Turtle had to stay to do extra credit for Spanish, so I was on my own with my bike.

I grabbed my backpack and headed to the office, where they had my bike.

"How was school, Lindsey?" Mrs. Romero asked when I walked into the office.

"It was fine. The brothers are nice." I said.

Mrs. Romero stood up and walked over to a closet where my bike was. "They seem quiet, but I guess it's because it's their first day." Mrs. Romero said as she unlocked the closet door and opened it.

"Yeah. How's the baby?" I asked looking at her big belly.

"She's kicking a lot. The doctors say she might come out some time this week, so Vicente has everything prepared." Mrs. Romero said.

I got my bike. "Nerves?" I asked.

"Yeah. A lot. But hey, there's a first for everything." Mrs. Romero smiled.

"Good luck if she decides to be born at night." I said.

"If Rosaline decides to be born at midnight I will use that as an excuse for whenever she doesn't want to do anything I send her to do." Mrs. Romero smiled.

I laughed. "See you tomorrow. I called dad and told him I would be coming home early." I said as I started to walk out of the office.

"See you tomorrow, Lindsey." Mrs. Romero waved.

The traffic cleared up a little bit, but I had to be quick when I rode my bike across the busy Central Ave. I had to use Central Ave. in order to get to Orville to get to home. I had to be cautious as I rode down here, but that was when I crossed the streets.

I was first going to head over to my dad's restaurant. It was a Mexican grill restaurant and a lot of people go there to eat on Fridays and Saturdays. Dad's restaurant was on the corner of Central and Orville, so it was close to home.

As I was in front of the restaurant and was about to head in, I saw a couple of kids from the Washington High School, that was four blocks away from Bishop Peter, walk by on the other side of the street.

Usually I wouldn't pay any attention to them. All those guys, who call themselves the Traps, liked to whistle at me when I rode by here. I don't like them at all, they're rude and they think they're smart. I bet they don't even know they named themselves after a muscle.

This time I did pay attention to them. They were saying rude things to someone. I turned around and saw they had someone cornered.

"Why'd you move schools, faggot?" A guy with blonde hair said. He seemed to be the leader of this group.

"Answer Troy! Are you stupid or retarded?" Another guy said.

I couldn't stand there and watch. I quickly ran inside the restaurant. I looked around and saw Maria, the waiter who worked here after school, standing next to the door.

"Hey Lind-"

"No time. Hold my stuff." I handed her my bike and my bag and ran out the door.

By now the guys had started beating up someone. I desperately press the stop light's button to walk. I heard the poor guy scream. The voice sounded so familiar to me.

"Shit, shit, shit, shit." I muttered as I figured out who's voice it was. I might of heard it just today and only for a little bit, but I knew it was Gerard.

"Lindsey, what's wrong?" Dad asked as he had ran out by my side.

"Dad, Gerard is getting hurt." I said. I saw the light turn red, now we can walk.

I ran as I crossed the street. "Lindsey, wait!" Dad called as he ran behind me.

"Leave him alone!" I yelled as I tackled the blonde leader. The other guys backed off of Gerard and looked at us on the ground.

"What the fuck?" The blonde guy said. I got up to my feet as dad ran up here.

"Dude, you just got tackle by a girl." One of the guys said, causing all of them to laugh.

"Catholic school girl suddenly feels brave, huh." The guy said as he started to walk towards Gerard, who was now trying to stand up. He was bleeding from his nose and had a few cuts on his face.

"Shut up and get away from him." I said and stood in front of Gerard.

"Make me, little bitch." He said.

"Hey! Don't call my girl that. And I recommend you leaving him alone before I call the cops on you." Dad said.

The guys looked at dad and then at me. "We'll be back for you, faggot." The leader said and they started walking away.

When they had turned a corner, I turned around and faced Gerard. "Are you okay?" I asked him. He just shook his head.

"Dad, lets take him inside," I told him. Both Dad and I carried him inside the restaurant.
"What happened." Maria asked as we walked in.

"Get me some paper towels." Dad ordered her. Maria ran to the restrooms.

"Gerard, does anything hurt. Should we take you to the hospital?" I asked him. He shrugged. Maria came back with the paper towels. I wiped away the blood from his face.

"Where's Mikey?" I asked Gerard.

"A-at the g-gas station." Gerard stuttered.

"Gerard. I'm going to get him. Maria and Dad will help you get clean okay?" I said. Gerard nodded and Maria took my seat while I began to run out the door.

I ran across the street again. The gas station was a couple of doors away from my dad's restaurant. By the time I got to the gas station I had ran out of breath, but I kept running until I found Mikey.

"Lindsey?"

"Mikey... Gerard... help." I said while trying to catch my breath.

"Get in the car. Where can I find him." Mikey said as he started the car.

I told him where the restaurant was and he drove over there. We both rushed in.

"Gerard are you okay?" Mikey asked.

"I-I'm fine." Gerard said.

"He just has minor cuts and bruises." Dad said.

"Oh thank God." Mikey muttered before hugging Gerard. "Was it Troy and the Traps?" He asked.

"Yeah. Lindsey tackled Troy." Gerard gave a small chuckle.

Mikey turned around to me and gave me a surprise look. "You did what?"

"Tackled him." I said.

"Oh man that must've been funny... I'm going to call mom," Mikey said. Mikey walked outside of the restaurant. I sat next to Gerard.

"You sure you're okay?" I asked.

"I'm fine. Thanks for defending me... back there." Gerard whispered.

"Hey, remember what I told you today at school?" I asked him.

"Yeah."

"Well, remember I got your back, no matter what." I said.
