Love and Other Stupid Things

The Boys and Girls in the Clique

Gerard POV
Frank helped me off the ground and I was still sort of laughing. It was just like him. I looked up at him and caught him staring at me. Frankie blushed and looked away. We both started making our way to the prison we call school. I bet us teenagers scare the living shit out of teachers. I chuckled silently. We were quite for the rest of the short walk and I caught Frank looking at me a few more times but I didn’t say anything. As Belleville High came into view, I saw some of our friends scattered around the entrance…Including Mikey. The traitor must have gotten a ride from Ray earlier.
“Hey Gee. Midget,” Ray greeted us, making Frank scowl at the ground. Ray walked over and pet Frankie on the head.
“It’s okay. You might grow someday…” We were some of the only people who could make fun of Frank’s shortness. Anyone else wouldn’t be able to walk away without some sort of injury. I thought it was cute… Cute? I mentally shrugged it off and glanced at the now crowded walkway.
“Dudes, we should better get going,” I said, noticing that everybody was holding identical neon green sheets of paper, except me.
“What’s that?” I asked, vaguely pointing to the papers.
“You didn’t think you could just walk into any class you wanted did you? They’re the schedules. Go to the office,” Mikey said to me as he started to walk away.
“Thanks for the help,” I said sarcastically. I sighed and said bye to Ray and Frank which they both returned as we went our separate directions. I hoped that this year won’t be anything like the last one. Our group always got picked on just because we were different. And in high school, apparently being unique was a reason to get bullied. Luckily they had Bob, who everybody seemed to be afraid of. Where is Bob? The inside of the school was just like I remembered; over-crowded, smelly, and dull. The fluorescent lights were almost painful since I hadn’t been around them all summer. Everything was stuffy and I was already being pushed in every direction on my way to the office.
I was able to get into the even smaller room. Thankfully there wasn’t a crowd behind the desk. I walked up to where the secretary was and cleared my throat. The school must have employed a new one since last school year. This one was much younger- probably 22- and pretty.
“Yes?” She said in a bored voice, but as she looked up, her eyes sparked with interest. She stood up from behind the counter and leaned over.
“Um,” I cleared my throat again, “I need a schedule. My name is uh Gerard Way.”
“Sure honey. One moment,” She smiled and walked back to the desk. *Click, type, click, click.* The ancient printer beside me groaned to life and printed out my schedule a little bit slower than a snail. I glanced nervously at the clock which said 8:05. I normally wouldn’t be bothered showing up on time for class but I could see the pretty secretary staring at me out of the corner of my eye. Any other day I probably would have flirted with her but for some reason, I really wanted to see if Frank was going to be in any of my classes. Every year, Ray, Frank, and I picked the same courses so we could end up in each other’s classes. Mikey and Bob were in a year under us so they couldn’t do the same thing.
As soon as it was done printing I snatched it up saying a quick thanks to the girl, who seemed disappointed. As I was walking out of the office, I bumped into someone who was like almost a foot taller than me. The giant suddenly picked me up into a… hug? My feet were dangling off the ground. It could only be one person.
“Bob?” I gasped out.
“Gee! I haven’t seen you all summer!” He exclaimed.
“Yeah and you won’t be able to see me all school year if you don’t set me down. Can’t breathe!” He put me back down on the floor and I swayed a little bit. Bob started laughing.
“Damn, Gee. School hasn’t even started and you’re already in the office?!” He joked, grinning.
“Yeah, I’m going for a new record,” Just as I said that, the bell rang. “Well, we both have to get to class. I’ll see you after school, okay?”
“Yeah, man. I need to go find your brother,” He said and stalked off to the lower floor. Belleville was set up strangely but the faculty tried- and failed- to keep it organized. The 9th grade was on the top floor. On the second was 11th along with the library and connection classes. 12th grade was on the main level with the cafeteria, gym, and the arts classes. And finally, 10th grade was on the bottom level which was really cool because of the 3 level parking decks that connected to the 3 floors.
I glanced at my schedule once I got to my locker on the second floor.
Course TeacherDay/BlockRoom #
European Literature Ms. Russell 1/1 B302
World History Mr. Cosby 1/2 B316
Visual Art Adv. Mrs. Dennis 2/3 A234
Spanish 1A Ms. Grammont 1/3 B111
Physical Education Coach Jones 2/4 A200
Algebra 2 Gen. Mr. Baptiste 2/5 B309
AP Chemistry Mr. Williams 1/6 B327

And my first thought upon reading this: … Huh? I didn’t even try to understand this one. But I remember Frankie saying something about Ms. Russell first period and I felt a lot better walking to class. Lucky for me, none of the regular jerks came by trying to start something with me. The first week was pretty much like that, and then it all started.
Sure enough, as I walked into Literature I saw Frank sitting in the very back of the classroom, but no Ray.I joined Frank at the empty desk next to him stealing his schedule. They were almost identical except for art, Spanish, and P.E. This practically made my year. I looked up to him with a huge smile. I don’t know why I was so happy about this.
“Four classes Frankie,” I said as he took his paper back.
“Great. And by the way, I’m coming over after school. My mom has, uh, another…” He trailed off. I knew all about this and I knew that it sucked for Frank even though he tried to play it off like he didn’t care. The last man that Ms. Iero brought home was a total douche and they broke up after he became abusive to her and Frank.
“Sorry dude. Yea Bob and Ray are probably going to come over too. We can watch movies and play Halo,” I said and Frank’s face lit up. The teacher came walking in and started the usual monologue about school rules and introducing herself, handing out a whole bunch of meaningless shit about not bullying. This was going to be a long day. Frank and I sighed at the same time and then started laughing. I look at his face and the beautiful smile one doesn’t see a lot during the school year. Well, maybe the day won’t be that long…
