Can't Trust a Girl in Blue

Chapter 12 - Heavy lies the crown

The younger brother stares at the ceiling, restless as his thoughts on his brother in the room. It’s nothing. But what if it isn’t?

Knowing he won’t be able to sleep until he finds out if his brother is hiding something. He gets out of bed in a hurry. Walking swiftly and in a hurry to the eighth grade hallway, making absolutely no noise as he goes.

He approaches the hallway entrance, remembering exactly what door it was. Walking silently and lightly, reaching as he approaches the door. Grasping hold of the lock and pulling it open, making no noise still. He then dims the light enough to peek into half-darkness, hearing a small gasp as he did. He shakes as he shuts the door behind him, walking forward trying to gain sight of the rooms contents and trying to gain confidence. He sees in the center of the room, a table, with what looks like a person with a black sheet over them.

He walks with caution towards it, he hears another gasp to the left of his direction of motion. He looks over and sees a girl chained by her arms and legs, she was very thin, almost starved, and shaken with lack of sleep and fear. Changing his expression of confidence to a more guilt look, he turns back to the table, lifts up the black cloth covering the body form.

Peering up was an almost lifeless body, beaten in the face. He shakes with sorrow as her sad blue eyes stare up at him. What has his brother done? They don’t murder the sick, they help them change.

He touches her arm and she looks down at his hand. His cold touch consumes her skin with goose bumps. He opens his mouth, unable to think of words to say. Then a few come to mind, “Don’t fear, for your abuser is not me, but rather my brother.” He explains softly, but loud enough so the other girl on the wall can hear him too. “I will protect you. What are your names? Ages?”

The girl on the wall says weakly, “I am Kat, 16, and that’s my sister, Echo. She is 14. She cannot speak, and soon neither can…” She moves her lips but no words are to be heard. The youngest brother nods at Kat, leaves, then returns quickly with two cups filled with black sludge liquid.

“Drink,” he explains, “you will regain your voices. But do not scream for my brother will come searching.” The boy looks at them both with full seriousness as he hands them their glasses. He unties Echo, helping her sit up.

They drink. Relief flows through the girls as they look at each other. Echo looks up at the boy, her blue eyes sparkle as he looks down at her.

“I will protect you both from my brother. Trust me.” The boy says without loosing eye contact with Echo. Echo stares back, “What is your name?” she asks almost in a trance.

“My name is Alek.”

Notes

First name yay :D You can finally tell the boys apart. The younger brother is Alek and he is now in short, Autumns caretaker and also the more loving twin.
