Make a wish when a Blackbird flies
Chapter 9
Septon hospital for the mentally insane; that's where they were taking him.
The news had spread all over town, that crazy Frank Iero had killed an innocent young man. Everyone always knew that he was crazy, nothing was ever done about it though since he seemed harmless; he was always just sitting in a corner speaking to himself. But now that the death of a student was involved he suddenly became the most terrifying criminal out there; he risked life in jail just for an unfortunate accident.
The only reason he saved himself from that fate was because his lawyer pleaded for insanity in front of a judge and jury; the case closed quickly sending a 16 year old away to a mental hospital, to remain there until he was deemed fit to re-enter society. So to Septon hospital it was.
The imposing building was once titled as Septon Hall, owned by some rich Dutchman who after moving to 'the new world' wanted to build himself a large mansion to live with his many wives and children, near the end of the 19th century. It was closed and put up for sale after the big family had died under mysterious circumstances, to be bought, re-constructed and re-opened in 1942 as a hospital for the victims of World War II.
At the end of the war it was once again re-opened as a hospital for the mentally insane, which now housed over 300 patients. Frank wasn't quite sure in what state or town it was in, bu it was a good 28 hours by train and two more by cab to get to it; all he knew was that it was somewhere in the countryside. A long journey, spent completely in silence as his parents, who were traveling with him, refused to speak to him.
They arrived at the gate, which was the only entrance through the ten foot high brick wall that surrounded at least a hundred acres of green land, followed by a road that lead up to the large Victorian stile building. The wall extended in a sort of semicircle closing just behind the building; behind that was vast amounts of woodland.
Frank watched through the window of the cab as they drove along, this was going to be where he lived for however long they decided he was crazy. The main building itself was very large, and during the time it had been reconstructed, three separate buildings had been added close together, connected by underground tunnels for the staff to use; there was also a single chimney poking out from behind the buildings, and at the time Frank thought it was probably where the kitchen was.
The cab stopped in front of the main door where a woman seemed to be waiting for them.
"You must be the Ieros. Welcome." She said once they got out of the car and Frank had retrieved his luggage. She seemed to be a nurse, as she was wearing a simple white uniform. "I'm nurse Paige." She spoke, confirming Frank's first thought about her. "If you'll follow me I'll give you a quick tour of the place." She said, without bothering to shake anyone's hand first, with a smile that didn't quite suit her face.
Nevertheless Frank and his parents followed nurse Paige into the building. They entered a reception area where they saw another nurse sitting at a desk and various seats around the spacious room, a staircase on the side of it.
"This is the reception area, where visitors can be comfortable as they wait. Oh... you won't be needing that for your stay here." She said gesturing to Frank's luggage, reaching for it.
He was a little hesitant to let her take it, he had somehow managed to pack whatever was left of his life inside it and he didn't want that taken away from him.
"Don't worry, you can have it back, when you leave. We'll keep it safe for you." She said, it sounded as if she meant to say 'if' and he didn't trust them enough to keep his stuff safe. But when his father, standing behind him, let out a "Frank" in a warning tone, he forfeited his luggage to the receptionist who just walked away with it.
So for the next hour the three of them followed nurse Paige around the main building, which was referred to as the north wing, which was where he would be staying. The other three buildings around were built in the same fashion as the first, so that all four had the same number of bedrooms, dining halls, recreation rooms, offices, kitchens and infirmaries. All of these were found on three different floors and by crossing countless white hallways which Frank was sure to get lost in.
During the tour the nurse talked mostly about the various rules to follow, like at what time the meals would be served and that it wasn't allowed for a patient to be out of their room after a certain time ecc. Along the way they saw other nurses and doctors but no other patients, the place seemed to be empty of them.
"And this will be your room Frank." She said stopping in front of a room with a thick heavy door with a large lock o it. "Are there any questions you'd like to ask?" She asked, mostly to his parents. For the whole time they had remained silent, bar a few greetings to the various people that they met along the way.
"Um...where are the other patients? I haven't seen anyone except the staff." Said Frank after noticing that his parents didn't care for more information.
"Oh, everyone is off at lunch; as soon as you say goodbye to your parents and change you can join them." She smiled, which seemed wrong because Frank was probably never going to see his parents for a very long time, or so he thought. "I'll give you a few minutes." The nurse added and walked off.
Frank turned to face his parents. For a few seconds they stayed in an awkward silence, until his mother sighed loudly and forced herself to give her son a hug, which was much too short and cold, then stepped back. His father squeezed his shoulder until it hurt.
"Don't screw this up." He said with a clenched jaw. "Or that really will be the end of you." He then let go just as nurse Paige came back, she then proceeded to escort his parents back to the main entrance leaving Frank alone to change in the clothes left in his room.
He stared at his parents as they left; it was no secret to him what they thought about him, but it hurt that they couldn't even pretend in front of strangers to care enough to say a proper goodbye. He sighed and walked into the room which he would be calling his for longer than he would ever imagine; he found one set of clothes folded neatly on the bed. A pale blue jumpsuit with his name stitched into the left side of the front.
All that was in the room was a bed with thin sheets on a metal frame and a window on the back wall, covered with a metal grate. And that was it, he had nothing else.
Once he had changed he sighed and walked out of his cell, that's all it was to him, leaving his normal clothes in a heap on the bed; a man was waiting outside for him, it looked like another nurse by the completely white uniform he was wearing. He looked completely un-interested, he didn't exchange any greeting, just said a quick "I'm here to take you to the dining hall."
Then without even waiting for a response, grabbed Frank by the shoulder and walked him down the hall. As he was practically being dragged about, Frank tried to memorize all the turns they were taking, but after going down a flight of stairs he discovered it was almost impossible, the place seemed like a giant maze. Finally they arrived at a pair of swinging doors and pushed through them.
It was a large room, completely bare; large windows were on one side covered in the same grate as the one in his cell, it let in the sunlight that illuminated the white walls, but it was divided by a checkered shadow. At the very end of the room, straight ahead from the door was a long counter, behind which stood two middle aged men who were obviously there to serve the food.
The tables in the middle of the room were arranged so that they were divided into two groups. On the side closest to the windows were about three tables which seated some of the doctors and other nurses; on the other side were about 20 tables, most of the seats taken up by at least 50 other patients, men in pale blue jumpsuits, the women in pale pink ones.
As soon as Frank entered the whole room went quiet and everyone looked up to stare at him; it felt a lot like his first day of high school, and he didn't think he would fit in well here either. The nurse still had a tight grip on his shoulder and pushed him towards the counter where one of the men handed him a bowl and spoon and the other filled it with a thick green coloured soup; he was then moved towards the only empty table and left alone, as the nurse went and sat across the room.
All of this was done in complete silence, but pretty soon, as Frank ignored the stares, everyone once again started murmuring and talking to each other, or alone, and the only person left in silence was Frank.
