Make a wish when a Blackbird flies

Chapter 7

I ended up spending the whole day with detective Way, surprisingly it wasn't so bad, he was actually quite pleasant, he was certainly alt better than yesterday; he wasn't ever rude and he never insulted anything I did or said, he was a whole different person. At first we stayed sat at the table talking for about an hour, nothing of great importance really; after that he wanted a tour of the whole carnival so I had to get up and show him the place and all the while he was talking about music and bands I had never heard of.

But the strange thing was that I felt I had known him for all my life, not because of my powers but for some other reason I couldn't quite explain. Another thing I noticed was how everyone who worked here seemed to stare at us with mild curiosity but also some kind of knowing look. Right now though the detective - AN Is it just me, or are we all sick of calling him just "detective"? like the twilight zone of doctor who - was prattling on about his brother, and he insisted on buying a stick of cotton candy that we should share.

"Everyone thought that he was going to be a girl before he was born, the doctor made some kind of mistake, so imagine our surprise when he came out, we had to re-decorate his room though all we did was paint the walls blue, big mistake, he's obsessed with unicorns now."

One thing I liked most about him was that he talked, like a lot and very quickly, I could hardly keep up, not that I wasn't listening, I hung onto every word he said; I don't talk much in general so there wasn't any opportunity to have awkward silences, it was perfect.

I giggled at what he said, this was the most interaction I had had with anyone, I always thought I would hate it, but he made i enjoyable.
"Are you going to finish that?" He asked pointing to the barely touched cotton candy, I passed it to him and he started stuffing his face with it, dropping us into silence.

"Um, you know, I could have gotten that for free, you didn't need to pay for it." I told him.
"But I wanted to pay for it." He smiled.
"That doesn't make sense, why would you want to lose money when it's not necessary?"
"The money isn't the point." He chuckled
"Then what is the point?"

He was silent for a few seconds just staring at me, not knowing what to say, well he knew what to say he just didn't think he could. He glanced at his watch and chose to change the subject.
"Wow it's late, time really flies huh?" I rolled my eyes at his pathetic attempt.
"Shall I then escort you to the exit?" I joked.
"Oh what a gentleman" He laughed and we started walking back.

It was already dark and despite the carnival being almost empty and ready to close, various lights had been turned on; they were basically just Christmas lights, but by the way they were placed, above shops and game booths and on wires above our heads, it made the place seem magical, in a terribly cliche way. As I was staring at the lights detective Way stared at me, this was another thing he had done all day, just stared at me as if he was looking for something.

We arrived at the entrance, which of course was also the exit, I stopped at the gates and the detective turned to look at me.
"Well, this was an interesting day, we should do it again sometime." He smiled, I rolled my eyes at his comment.
"I hope I don't-" I cut my sentence short as I felt something wet on my face; at first I thought it was the rain but it had been sunny all day and the stars were clearly visible now.
I wiped my face and realized it was a teardrop, my teardrop.

"Are you alright?" Asked detective Way, seeing what happened.
"I...don't know" I mumbled. "I'm sorry this has never happened before." I stuttered, laughing at myself and wiping at my eyes, just in case. "Get it together." I whispered to myself.
"It's alright, maybe you're just tired."
"Yeah, maybe."
I felt a strange sinking feeling in my chest, like a large weight had been tied to my heart.

"Anyway, I um...I should just..." He awkwardly said, starting to turn around, about to leave.
"Hey, you never told me your name." I said. He stopped for a moment, looking surprised.
"I didn't?" I shook my head. He thought for a moment. "Okay, I'll tell you my name, if you tell me what freaked you out in those cards yesterday."
"What?"
"Yesterday, you kicked me out of your tent after you saw something. Tell me what and I'll tell you my name."

This was nothing new, people always asked what I saw; I didn't often tell them because I thought they had no right to know what was in my head, but then again I saw what was in their heads, so I suppose it was only fair. Also I really wanted to know his name, for some reason it just seemed important. So I sighed and gave in.

"Alright. I actually saw my own death. It happens, sometimes, but always in different ways; I'm sort of used to it but it's still scary when it happens."
"How did you die this time?" He seemed curious, I didn't really want to tell him this part but I was afraid he wouldn't tell me his name.
"Well, I was hanging by a rope, from I think The top of some stairs."

Immediately his face seemed to change colour and he seemed distressed.
"Are you sure?" He asked urgently.
"Yes, but don't worry, I'll probably see myself getting hit by a train next week." He cleared his throat and tried to compose himself, but I could see it in his eyes, he was scared of something.

"So what's your name?" I asked when he stayed silent.
"It's Gerard."
"Gerard?"
"...Yes?"
"That's a peculiar name, you don't hear it very often." He chuckled.
"That's what you said when we first met." He said smiling.
"I didn't know your name when we first met, and I'm pretty sure I practically told you to piss off."
"Oh...right."

Once again his expression changed, this time to sad and hopeless. I didn't know what to do, I didn't want to just ask if he was alright because I would feel like that was an invasion of his privacy; basically I don't know what to do if people are sad, I'm so socially awkward that I did the first thing that came to mind and that was to punch him in the arm, guys do that right?

"Ow, what was that for?" He asked, he wasn't sad anymore though.
"I don't know...Well I guess I'll see you sometime?" Why did I say that?
"Yeah, I'll be back tomorrow if I can; take this." He fished through his pocket and pulled out a card. It had his name, his profession and a number on it, one I recognized from the hidden piece of paper he gave me yesterday.

"Give me a call sometime." He continued.
"You already gave me your number."
"No I didn't, I would remember if I did."
"You did. It was rolled up in the money you gave me." He thought for a moment, he really did spend too much time thinking, and then something dawned o him.

"Oh! That one wasn't meant for you, it was for...someone else."
"who was it for?" He looked guilty now.
"Well, I was trying to hookup with this guy a couple days ago..."
"You pay guys to hookup?"
"No, he was the bartender, I kind of had to pay him; this answers a lot of questions actually - you know what, this doesn't even matter. I should be going, good night, call me." He rushed out and quickly turned and left.

I just snorted in amusement at his leaving form. I turned around too, when I did I once again felt that same sinking feeling as before, along with disappointment; I didn't know why but I suddenly couldn't wait for tomorrow to come.
