Make a wish when a Blackbird flies
Chapter 31
I woke up from some kind of noise, like a tin can being kicked over. I slowly opened my eyes then closed them again, shielding them from the blinking light bulb that was hanging right above me. I tried twisting my head away from it but stopped when I felt searing pain in the back of it from where Nate must have knocked me out. I tried lifting my arm but found that I couldn't move.
Ignoring the pain in my head I tried looking down at myself only to see that my arms, legs, and torso were held down by leather restraints. I panicked and looked around the room I was in; grey stone peeling walls, and a menacing looking machine were all I could see.
Everything was covered in a thick layer of dust and cobwebs; the light bulb though seemed like the only thing that was new, it's thick black cord stapled to the ceiling and wall and whatever was giving it power wasn't even in the room. Footsteps sounded in the hallway, echoing around the whole silent building.
“Winds in the east, mist coming in, like something is brewing, about to begin; can't put my finger on what lies in store, I fear what's to happen, happened before.” Someone loudly sang as they came closer to the room I was in; by what I could see I figured that the door must have been behind me, so I was marginally prepared when a face suddenly appeared upside down above me.
It wasn't Nate, but he had wide eyes and a manic grin.
“I knew you'd be awake now.” He cheered and moved so that he was standing beside me. I should know by now, what they say goes.” As I stared at him properly, I couldn't, for the life of me, figure out who the hell he was, I had never seen him before.
He looked old, like at least twenty years older than me. He moved again to stand by my feet; he was staring at me knowingly, his smile had fallen a little, so he looked like he was about to tell a funny story.
“Ready to have some fun?” He asked after a few seconds.
“Who the hell are you?” I snapped. He turned completely serious, it's not surprising that he looked scarier than when he was manically happy.
“You don't remember?” He asked in a low voice, he came closer. “You must, they said you would.” He grabbed my face in a vice grip. “You already remember everything else!” He yelled, making me shut my eyes and try to twist my head away from him.
“Aw, leave the poor kid alone.” Came another voice from behind me. “It's not his fault he can't see past the end of his nose.” Once the man let go of my face I twisted my head up so that I could sort of see who it was. It was Nate. I knew he was behind all this.
He was leaning on the door frame – which no longer had a door in it – and when he saw me stare at him he came closer, the light flickering as he did. He looked different now, like I had seen him in my vision, his dark eyes seemed to sink into anything he looked at.
“Surprised Frankie?” He asked. “But you knew all along, you saw it coming, like you see everything.”
“What's going on? Why are you doing this?” I whimpered out. The two men looked at each other in exaggerated disbelief.
“Don't you know where we are?” Asked the old man. “This should feel like a second home to you, after all the years you've been locked away in here.” I knew where I was, it would be difficult not to recognize it, I just didn't understand what kind of sick game they wanted to lead us into.
“What do you want from me?” I asked.
“Oh, we'll be doing something terrible to you.” Said Nate while the other man just laughed.
“No less than what the people here did to you, actually.” He continued while I just stared at them in horror and fear.
They stared at each other again, like twin brothers up to no good.
“Shall we then?” Nate asked him and the other nodded once. Immediately they both sprung into action and bounced over to the machine on the side and started tinkering with it.
“What is that?” I asked, knowing very well what it was.
They ignored me and brought over a familiar looking curved piece of metal.
“Wait, wait!” I exclaimed not wanting my haunted past to repeat itself.
“This is going to hurt Frankie.” Was the only warning I got from Nate before he pressed the cold metal to my temples.
“NO!” I screamed and my whole body jumped.
I felt nothing, just heard booming laughter. I didn't realize my eyes were closed until I opened them and saw those two bent double laughing like it was the funniest thing in the world.
“His face...” Nate wheezed out. After a few minutes they seemed to calm down enough to speak.
“There hasn't been any power in this place for almost five years.” The unknown man chortled out. I felt myself shaking in fear, I wanted Gerard, I just wanted to be with him anywhere away from here; I had no idea what was going on or what these two men wanted.
“Well, that was fun.” Nate said breathing hard and wiping his eyes. “What now?” He asked.
“Gerard is gonna kill you.” I said. “He's coming to get me.” I could almost feel him now, the energy he was consuming left a small vibration in the air around me, like a buzzing. He was coming, and he was pissed.
The two men looked at each other for a moment.
“We know he's coming.” The older man said like it was so obvious. “We're actually just waiting for him now.”
“The fun can't really begin without him.” Nate went on.
“What do you mean? What do you want from me?” I asked again.
“Oh, we don't want anything from you.” The man said. He came closer and started undoing the straps keeping me trapped. “It's Gerard we want. That little rot has been getting in my way since before he was born.” He hissed. I sat up on the bed and swung my legs over the side – away from them – and just sat there listening to the ramblings of that crazy man.
“Since you don't seem to remember much of anything I guess I just have to spell everything out for you.” The man said bitterly. “This place, I know it well, it used to be my home too. About the same time you came around actually. I saw him, whenever he came to see you, and I thought that if I killed him in that moment, everything would be over.
“And it would be so easy, I wouldn't even get blamed for it. But then they made me see sense; my purpose is not to kill Gerard Way, no, my purpose is to make him suffer more that anyone could.” I was slowly beginning to understand what all of this could be about. Though I was still confused as to why I was here.
What's the worst way you can make someone suffer? I used to work with children and for them you would just need to take away the thing they love most. I thought I'd do the same with him.” He suddenly grabbed my shoulders and spoke in my ear. “I was going to kill you Frank. Slowly and so painfully, so that the next time he came for you, he would see that I can do anything, and he couldn't stop me.”
I gasped and he let me go laughing loudly, and then stopping suddenly.
“But then you had to go and run away -to be honest I never though anyone could do it – so what was I supposed to do then? I just waited and when he came again to free us all he looked right at me, without knowing it was me.”
He laughed again; I thought fast, seeing that Nate was leaning against the wall behind me with a smirk on his face, just watching. I only had one chance to do this.
“But it was a good thing, it gave me more time to plan all of this perfectly. As soon as he walks in he'll have a great surprise-” As he was speaking I suddenly jumped off the bed and pushed backwards.
The bed was on wheels, so it easily rolled back from the force of my push and crashed into the two men giving me a small head start that was just enough to allow me a quick sprint out the door. I ran down the corridor, soon hearing them yelling after me. I couldn't see where I was going, it was so dark; this place really had been abandoned.
After a few minutes of running in a straight line I suddenly tripped over something on the floor and crashed down to my hands and knees. I could hear who I assumed to be Nate behind me, he was so close. I got up and turned to my left, there was a window in what seemed to be a large bathroom; by what little light coming in I could barely see it was full of old bath tubs.
Barely thinking I crawled into one and laid myself flat on the bottom, I noticed it was covered in some dark residue. I heard someone run passed the room, then a second pair of slower footsteps.
“Now old mister Johnson had trouble of his own, he had a yellow cat who wouldn't leave his home.” They sand loudly, by the voice it sounded like that man, I was now about 95% sure he was the man Gerard was looking for, Phil something.
So what did Nate have to do with all of this?
“He tried and he tried, to give the cat away, he gave it to a man going far far away.” He sang as he stopped by the entrance to the bathroom. I covered my mouth to stifle any noises I might make.
“Well the man around the corner swore he'd kill the cat on sight, so he loaded up his shotgun with nails and dynamite.”
He kept singing as he slowly walked in, my heart was beating so loudly I was sure he would hear it and find me. “Then he waited...and he waited...for the at to come around...” He came closer still, he was surely going to find me soon. “Ninety-seven pieces of the man were all they ever found...” Everything went deadly silent, until I finally heard his footsteps leave the room.
I breathed heavily out of my nose in relief and sat up in the tub. All I had to do now was wait for Gerard and somehow get to him before they found him. My small victory was short lived of course.
“But the cat came back!” Someone shouted from behind me and grabbed me, making me yell out.
He pulled me out of the tub and dragged me out of the room where I could faintly see Nate's silhouette waiting for us. He grabbed my legs and I was carried around the hospital as I struggled, just like I had been when I was back in this place. I wondered how they knew where we were going, this place was so dark without artificial light.
They suddenly stopped and I was dropped down what felt like a flight of stairs, rolling down and falling to the floor painfully with a groan.
“You idiot, you dropped him.” Scolded someone.
“I didn't drop him, it was you, you old fart.” Said the other and then they both burst out laughing.
We were in the main entrance, where the reception area was, but that large desk was now gone. I tried crawling towards the door, one last attempt at escape, but I was grabbed by my hair and pulled onto my knees.
“You can't leave now.” Nate said through his teeth. “Gerard's not even here yet.”
Notes
So what's gonna happen next?? Can anyone guess??
