Make a wish when a Blackbird flies

Chapter 29

“Are you sure he's in there?” Matt asked from the passenger seat.
“I'm sure; he practically saw him, the locations coincide, it must be him.” I told him while driving to the carnival. We were on our way to make an arrest on Nate, the man Frank helped me figure out was the killer.

Matt had been a little hesitant, he wanted to be completely sure we got the right guy; making a mistake would cause more murders and then we'd have to start everything from the beginning. Mostly I think he was just slightly nervous about meeting Frank again; the last time they saw each other wasn't exactly conventional.

We parked just outside the entrance.
“Try to find this Nate guy, ask around or something, just find him.” I told Matt as we walked through, the ticket vendor knew me well by now so, as always, he let us pass free of charge.
“What are you gonna do?” He asked.
“I have to find Frank.” Was all I said before walking off.

I was worried about him, I just let him leave as if there wasn't a serial killer on the loose who had a weird habit of making my life hell for some reason. Every time we separated, every time I left him, it was like at that place, it would change him a little bit more.

Now I know what they were doing to him, but back then all I knew was that I was losing him more and more every day.

“Right this way, Mr. Way.” Giggled the nurse who was leading me around the place. After he was taken away I was never allowed to see him, and it was only after the trial that his parents finally told me where they had sent him.

I had been to see him a few times; at the beginning he seemed fine, I mean he was miserable being away from home, alone in this place, but he was alright. When I came back a few weeks later he didn't seem to have slept at all. The following months his mind seemed to deteriorate even more.

He kept forgetting things he just said, losing the trail of the conversation and just not focusing at all. His conception of time was all wrong; when he thought a week had passed it was actually a couple of months. I tried to visit him as much as I could, bringing him news from back home.

Matt waking up – which he actually already knew about – and joining me on some sort of crusade to rescue him, Mikey finally gaining the guts to ask out Alicia, my graduation, Mikey's graduation, Matt and me finally joining the police force, Mikey getting into college an wanting to start a new life with Alicia. He missed everything.

They weren't treating him right in that place, he would be scared of the people around him and the medication they gave him seemed to be the main cause of his mind alteration. Every time I came to see him it would take him longer to recognize me, he kept asking about his parents, wandering when they were coming to visit, because he had forgotten that they had left him here in the first place.

I kept promising that I was going to get him out soon, and every time came back empty handed; it was difficult to bring something up for investigation without proof. And so five years passed much in the same fashion, after a while I would visit him less and less; I started drinking just to cope with his absence and pretty soon found that I couldn't stop.

I managed to hide it from people, especially work. It was because of that that I had to stay away for a long time, my work had become a priority and his visits a sort of chore. Just before I saw him for the last time it seemed to finally dawn on me that he was waiting for me, and counting on me to get him out; I was the only one who still remembered him, I couldn't leave him, he was everything to me.

“We had to confine him to his room, he's been acting out lately. He hasn't been responding well to the medication so we had to increase the dosage. He might look a little different from the last time you saw him.” As I followed the nurse – briefly noticing she was different from the usual one – I noticed other patients in the halls having to be controlled by nurses and security staff, shoving pills or needles in them to calm them down, it just seemed to make them worse.

I had never been in this part of the hospital before. We finally reached a door, like all the others in this place, I wondered how they knew which patient lived where.
“He's in restraints so it should be perfectly safe for you.” She said unlocking the heavy iron door and swinging it open, revealing a small room with nothing but a mattress on a metal frame, no sheets or covers.

“Frank, there's someone here to see you.” Said the nurse who was now looking down at her clipboard.
“I'm coming mommy.” He said from inside. I stepped in and saw him, I almost ran out. He was sitting on the bed cross-legged staring at a part on the wall where he had obviously peeled the grey paint away to reveal a nice blue colour underneath.

He was in a straight jacket, but he had ripped the sleeves apart so that his arms were free. As for the rest of him...he had definitely seen better days. His hair that had grown out over the years was now matted and stuck in the wrong angles, his skin was a sickly pale colour like he hadn't seen the sun in forever; he didn't even look like he'd had a good wash for ages.

His eyes were the worst, the light they once held was gone, taken away, leaving behind a dull empty shell of what he once was. I was almost afraid to get close to him.
“Frank?” My voice barely above a whisper, almost afraid to be too loud. He didn't seem to notice my presence. As I got closer I could see how skinny he had gotten, even through the over sized vest.

I sat on the bed next to him; there were dark rings under his eyes.
“Frank...” I whispered again, moving one of my hands to touch his cheek, using the other to turn his head towards me. His skin was icy cold and his eyes looked right through me. “Frankie...it's me, it's Gerard...it's me baby.” I whispered and for a moment I saw recognition flash in his eyes.

“It's you.” He whispered back a small smile on his lips, then just as quickly as it had arrived it was gone. His blank stare-at-the-wall face came back. I sighed, defeated, and rested my head against his, my arms circling his thin frame.

“I'm sorry, I never should of left you here, I should have taken you away as soon as I could...I should have never let them take you.” I was so busy relishing in the fact that he was in my arms that I barely noticed him pressing himself closer to me, I did however notice when he started rubbing my crotch.

I pulled back just before he started undoing my pants, at which point I jumped back from the bed and onto my feet.
“Wait-What are you doing?” I exclaimed.
“Don't you want to feel good? Isn't that why you came in here?” He asked sounding like a child. “That's the only reason why anyone ever comes in here...I have a lot of doctors...” He trailed off.

“What?” I spluttered.
“You seem tense; let me put you in my mouth.” He said and slithered to the ground on his knees right in front of me where he once again tried to undo my pants.
“No, Frank, stop!” I almost yelled, grabbing his hands and pushing him back.

His sticky hair fell away from his face, and that's when I saw them. Big ugly, red burn marks on his temples; electroshock therapy, this definitely wasn't legal. When he saw what I was staring at he suddenly looked guilty. I dropped to my knees with him.

“Oh god...what have they done to you?”
“I'm not supposed to tell...I'm not supposed to tell...” He whispered and started rocking back and forth. I had to get him out of here, they were surely going to kill him if he stayed. I stood up and held my hand out to him.

“Come on.” I urged him, I was going to get him out of here even if I had to sneak him under my jacket. Unfortunately he found something else to grab onto. My gun – that the security hadn't even bothered to take from me – was suddenly ripped from it's holster by my hip and pointed at his own head.

“NO!” I screamed and grabbed his hand. We fought over it, he was surprisingly strong; at one point he managed to twist it around so that it was pointing to his forehead.
“Please, please, set me free, I can't take it!” He sobbed.
“Stop it!” I yelled again and finally got a proper hold of the gun, throwing it across the room.

He screamed and cried harder.
“I can't take it! I'm in hell, this is hell!” He yelled and started hyperventilating. I didn't know what to do, all I could do was watch him crumble; the sight of him broke my heart. This was my fault.

“Frank!” Came a sharp cry from the door, the nurse stormed in, at the sight and sound of her Frank immediately stopped crying and stood up. “I leave you alone here for five minutes- and you've torn your vest. What would Paige say?” She said pointing at the tattered remains he was wearing.

Nurse Paige is dead; she's too busy sucking cock in hell.” The sound of a slap echoed around the whole room.
“Hey.” I exclaimed. The nurse took my outburst to be against him.
“Sir, I apologize for the way he is acting-” She started.
“There's no need for that. I will be needing some release papers, I'm taking him away.”

“You can't take him away-”
“Yes I can. He's not supposed to be here, you are torturing him.”
“I'm sorry if you think that sir, but the only way he can be released is if his parents consent to it, when he gets better.” She said slowly.

“This is bullshit! There's nothing wrong with him.” I shouted.
“Oh? And I suppose that is normal behavior?” She pointed to where he was against the wall, arms stretched out, as if he was hugging it. “Now I must ask you to leave, before I call security.” She said.

There was nothing I could do at that moment. I walked up to Frank.
“Hey, I'm gonna come back for you, I promise.” I said, and in a whisper, so that only he could hear I added “I love you, I love you.” There was no sign that he had heard me; that was the very last time I saw him in that place.

It was only later on, when I was driving away a good distance from the hospital, that I noticed my gun was still missing.

His tent was empty so I asked around and pretty soon found his caravan. I saw Cameo outside; she was just lying there whining a little.
“Hey girl.” I said leaning down to pat her, but when I took my hand away it was covered in blood, her blood, she was hurt, there was a huge gash in her side.

I quickly stood up and ran inside his caravan, the door was open but nobody was inside. I walked further in, on his bed I saw our picture, I knew he would have the other half. It was us, in a time when everything seemed perfect.

“Frank?” Came a voice by the door. It was Nancy, in these last few weeks she had been helping me to get Frank back.
“He's not here.” I told her, stuffing the two photo pieces in my pocket. “Do me a favour, the dog is hurt, you can do something to help her, right?” I said; She looked back outside and seemed to spot her.

“What happened?” She asked as she picked her up. I didn't answer and a few second later she walked off with the pup in her arms. I looked around the tiny space, a box on the floor caught my attention, more like what was inside of it. My old gun, the one I had lost years ago, I guess he had kept it with him.

I grabbed it and stuffed it in the back of my pants under my shirt. Better to have a spare, just in case.
“Gerard, I couldn't find this Nate guy, nobody's seen him today at all.” Came Matt's voice from the door.
“I guessed as much. Come on.” I said exiting the caravan and walking back to the carnival entrance.

“Do you know where he is?” Matt asked right beside me.
“No, but I think I know how to find him.”
“How?”
“Something Frank said to me once.” Was all I said.
