Make a wish when a Blackbird flies

Chapter 23

I remember waking up slowly and, considering the last couple of weeks, it had been something new. If I woke up slowly, I didn't wake up with a start, and if I didn't wake up with a start, I didn't have any nightmares and if I didn't have any nightmares I slept soundly throughout the night for the first time in weeks.

I smiled to myself, my eyes still closed, and stretched out on the small bed. I had a strange dream where Gerard and I were teenagers, we were getting lunch at the school cafeteria when suddenly a large black hole opened up under his feet and swallowed him up. Weird right?

And speaking of Gerard, when I rolled over on the bed I couldn't find him; in fact there were a lot of things I couldn't find in the room. Like the closet, the coffee table, Gerard's luggage and my clothes, even the window; everything had suddenly changed, the pasty white walls and stained floor carpet suddenly turned into grey concrete, the air changed, it was suddenly colder and stuffy.

I was stuck in my worst nightmare again, I was back in that horrible place, the place where all of your bad dreams live. I was sitting up on the bed and suddenly felt a warmth spreading underneath me; I looked down and my breath caught in my throat as I saw red, it started from below my pelvic area, which was covered by the sheet and was quickly spreading everywhere.

It was blood, my blood. Nothing was changing back, had everything been a dream? The carnival, Gerard, last night? This seemed too real to be the dream, and everything that had happened up to now was just too good, I knew it.

My attention was diverted by the large metal door clanging open and swinging with a high squeal on its rusty hinges; I was convinced that whoever was on the other side was surely coming to kill me, or worse. Their shadow loomed in first and just as I was about to scream in pure terror, in walked...Gerard?

Before I could think I launched myself out of bed and literally threw myself at him, my arms latching around his neck and my eyes shut tight.
“Whoa, hey, what's going on?” He asked surprised. He sounded sleepy and slowly circled his arms around me.

“I woke up and you weren't there.” I said sounding pitifully close to tears.
“I'm sorry, I was just in the bathroom.” He said tightening his hold on me. I opened my eyes just a crack, and sure enough the door he had just walked through led to a bathroom, white tiles and everything; everything else must be back to normal then, I thought with relief.

“What happened?” He asked sounding more awake and worried.
“I just...couldn't tell what was real anymore.” I said finally releasing him and giving him a reassuring smile, which I think failed.

“Did you have some kind of nightmare?” He asked in the same tone of concern.
“I don't know.” He was still holding onto me
“Hey you're shivering.” He said running his hands up and down my arms.
“I'm just cold.” I said which was pretty true as I remembered I wasn't wearing anything.

I turned completely red and looked down at my feet, briefly noticing that Gerard was wearing a pair of boxers. I heard him laugh lightly, then he led me back to the bed.
“Come on.” He softly encouraged.

We climbed back into bed and snuggled close together. The warmth of his body and the way he started running his hands through my hair was making me sleepy again.
“Hmm, what time is it?” I asked slowly closing my eyes and savouring the feeling of being so close to him.
“Almost nine.” He said after a brief pause. “When are you gonna go back?” He then asked.

“Back? Back where?” I asked, half asleep now.
“Back to the carnival. Don't you need to work?”
“You want to get rid of me already?” I joked.
“No, I just want to know how much time we have.”

“Oh...I don't want to go back.” I said and sighed as his hand moved from my hair to my back.
“Why not?” He asked. His voice was so soothing, like an old lullaby, it wasn't making it easy for me to stay awake and answer his questions.
“Hmm, I want to stay here with you. I feel safe. I think someone there wants to kill me.” I said and he suddenly froze his movements making me frown a little.

“What? Who?” He asked in a loud voice, too loud for me to completely fall asleep, I whined a little. Suddenly Gerard pulled me up into a sitting position waking me up again. “Frank this is important. Who wants to kill you?!” He asked again urgently.

I was a little startled but answered him anyway.
“Um, Nate, did I tell you about him? He doesn't seem to like you much. He grabbed me before I left and I saw...”
“What? What did you see?”
“It was probably nothing, just his over-active imagination-”
“Tell me what you saw Frank.”He said firmly, shaking me a little.

The way he was staring so intently into my eyes scared me a little.
“I saw- I saw him...hang me up...” I stuttered and suddenly I was gripped by fear; I felt so stupid for not feeling it before, the first time I saw it, but now it felt as if gravity had doubled in power and was pulling everything down.

I suddenly remembered a few weeks ago when I picked up that death card, the first time I met Gerard, I had seen the exact same thing, just from a different perspective and there was no sign of Nate, but it was the same. I had seen my death the exact way twice, which meant that the improbabilities in my future were aligning to create a possibility, and in this situation it was never a good thing.

“Who is this guy?” Gerard asked me.
“Um, he's the magician. But I don't know anything about him, nobody does, which is why I don't trust him at all.” I said. He looked confused for a moment.
“What about your powers? You said you can know people in a second, like when you watch them for a while.”

“It's not that simple; it's like he's hiding behind a wall, I only know a couple of things from him and they're useless, it's from when he was a child.”
“No piece of information is ever useless Frank, tell me all that you know.” I sighed, but closed my eyes and concentrated on Nate.

“He was never right. I mean other people didn't think he was right in the head; he was the kind of kid who didn't know the difference between throwing a stone at a cat and setting it on fire. He would sometimes force little kids to eat worms or maggots. He would steal dolls, look up their dresses and then cut all their hair off. And sometimes he would rip wings off of birds and just keep them in his pockets- I'm sorry, I don't want to go on anymore.” I said opening my eyes and forcing the images to disappear.

“Okay, it's okay.” Gerard said pulling me into a hug.
“I don't want to go back.” I mumbled into his shoulder.
“Okay.”
“He scares me he always has.” I said. He held me tighter.
“Please Gee, keep me safe.”

Notes

I used to keep small dead animals in my pockets. But they were already dead when I found them. I'm not crazy, my mother had me tested.

Anyway, hope you like the chapter, please comment, I love reading what you guys think :)
