Make a wish when a Blackbird flies

Chapter 2

"You're crazy" Detective Way told me bluntly. I absolutely despised that word, all my life it seemed to follow me around like a bad cold.
"I'm not crazy" I spat, then quickly composed myself.
"You asked for my help, and when I give you the answer you at like a spoiled child, well that's really mature of you." And with that I stood up and left;

I quickly made my way back to my small tent and sat at the classic round table on the inside. hadn't sat down for more than three minutes when the detective came in looking a little lost, as in he didn't know where to begin with his apology; yes, I already knew he was going to apologize.
"Um..." He stuttered.
"Oh, for god's sake, have you never apologized in your entire life?" I cut in.
"First of all, I never apologize for something I didn't do, and how do you know what I'm going to say?" He snapped back.
"You think you didn't do anything? So you coming in here acting like you own the place, expecting me to do your job for you, then insulting me just 'cause your spoiled ass didn't get what it wants is something you didn't do? And I know what you were gonna say because for my whole life I have seen things happen before they actually happen, and I cannot tell you just how frustrating it is to be treated like a freak of nature!" I yelled.

I had never lost my temper like this before, I had no idea who this guy was - other than a detective - but I don't think I could hate anyone more than hi m right now. He was silent for a full minute before he spoke.
"Well...I see now that I may have been a little insensitive," A little? "So I apologize for the trouble I caused, and thank you for your help." He said a lot more kindly.

After that he left but two seconds later he came back.
"What's your name?" He asked.
"You already know my name."
"I mean your full name, what's your last name?" I paused for a second.
"I don't have one" I answered quietly.He scoffed.
"Come on, everyone has a last name." He pressed.
"Why do you want to know so much?" I asked, I felt as if I had come up to a wall, I couldn't read him now, his intentions - If he had any - were completely to me, and for some reason I found this refreshing.

He shrugged and looked around.
"So what is it you do here?" He asked.
"You know what I do, why are you asking questions you already know the answers to?"
"No reason...What do you do when you're finished working?" It sounded like he was trying to ask me out.
"I go to my caravan and go to sleep." He just stared at me. "Sometimes I have dinner..."
"You mean you live in the carnival?" He asked bewildered.
"Well yes, ever since I joined, where else would I stay?"
"I don't know, have you ever left this place?" He asked but I didn't answer.

I glanced at my watch to see my brake was long over.
"I'm sorry but you'll have to excuse me, I have to work and you're holding up the line" There was no line, I just wanted him to leave. "So if you don't want to hear more 'crazy' talk spew out from me-" I didn't finish my sentence because he suddenly sat down on the chair opposite mine. "What are you doing? Don't you have a murderer to catch and a little girl to find?" I asked him.
"If what you said earlier is true, she's not going anywhere, and neither is he by his profile. So how does this work?"
"Um, well, I can predict your future or read your palm- are you sure you want to do this?" He seemed rather interested now but he could be pretending just to make me feel worse.

"I'm sure" he said smirking, and ladies contain your orgasms because it was to die for. "What's the difference between the two?"
"Well, palm reading is just about you and maybe things you don't know yet; whereas if I read your future it can be about almost anything; it's not a set thing, your future, but what I say might happen can affect your decisions and life in general..." I explained, it was a speech I said every time.

He thought for a moment then asked "Why don't you have a crystal ball?"
"Because those are for pussies and old ladies, now what do you want me to do?" Once again he smirked as he thought of something.
I guess I'll get both" He said and extended his hand towards me. I took it and looked carefully at the lines that crossed his palm; in truth I didn't need to look at his hands, but as I said before it was like his mind was blocked or empty, unlike everyone else who seemed to be a goldmine of personal information, he would only let out a few scraps here and there, like ashes floating away; never the less I forced myself to find something, anything. The sooner I told him what he wanted, the sooner he would leave.

"Ok, so...you have a younger brother?" I tried.
"I do" He replied intrigued.
"You're not married, obviously" He snorted "You're a raging alcoholic" He didn't make a sound "Also gay" Still he remained silent "And you didn't seem to have much fun in high-school" I looked up at him and noticed that he was already looking at me, our eyes met. "All in all you didn't have a very pleasant childhood." At that he took his hand back and placed it in his lap, out of my sight, but i didn't need to see it.

We stayed in a bit of an awkward silence until I decided to open my big mouth.
"I'm sorry about your mother." Something happened to her, but I don't know what, all I could gather is that she left and it conditioned his life immensely. He didn't say anything to that, but seemed to want to change the subject.
"Do that other thing, do you use the cards?"
"Oh, right, yes let me just..." I pulled my cards out, seeing as I would need them, shuffled them and laid the deck face down on the table. I did all this in a practiced manner since I had done it more than a few hundred times, while detective Way Watched me with curiosity.

I piked the first card and flipped it over on the table. The image showed six swords with a simple landscape as a background; one of the swords was plunged into the earth, while a second was pointing to the sky and the other four were in the middle, standing in a row.
"Six of swords, interesting." I said and the detective stared t me, obviously waiting for me to explain. "Six is a number associated with luck, weather it's good or bad depends on one's perspective. The swords just mean rational and scientific type of work. Though I said he luck was based on perspective, the fact that the card is pointing to you basically means you will have good fortune at work." I finished and picked up another card.

This one was of a man waving a around and various flying objects floating around him.
"The magician, someone new has stumbled into your life, unfortunately the mystery of this person may get you into some trouble." He kept quiet as I spoke, I didn't think he really believed anything I said. Nonetheless I picked the next card.

A woman holding a golden scale.
"Justice, seeing as you're a detective I'm not surprised, though you will soon meet an old enemy, but don't worry justice always prevails. " I joked at the last part but detective Way didn't the slightest bit amused. I carried on and picked one more card but this one made me stop everything. A skeleton in a robe, stood holding a long scythe, behind him were dead bodies floating in a black river. Death.

Though it wasn't the card that made me freeze, it was the images that appeared in my head that really scared me. It only lasted a second but it felt like hours; like when you dream, it feels like you're running through those white halls all night, but when you finally wake with a start you realize it was really no time at all, just a memory passing through your sub-conscious.

"Frank?" Detective way broke me out of my thoughts, I immediately stood up and picked up my cards.
"This reading is over" I hurriedly said. "Please you need to leave."
"What? Why, What did you see?" Detective Way asked.
"Get out, now!" I shouted and pushed him out of the tent and puled the flaps closed.
"What's going on?" He asked from outside.
"Listen to me, leave and don't come back here, I don't want you here." I said.
"What happened? Did I do something?" He was so confused I could here it.

"Just go." I insisted.
"Alright, just...let me give you something for your trouble." He said. I opened a flap of the tent just enough to see him pull out a folded up bill from his pocket.
"You don't need to pay me, it's all included in the entrance ticket" I told him.
"I didn't pay for the ticket, they let me in because of police business,so just take it.I won't leave until you do." He was holding it so I would have to stretch out and take it; I decided to just take the money,it probably wasn't much anyway, but if it would make him leave then so be it, so I quickly grabbed it and hid back in the tent.
"Thanks again" He said, then I finally heard him walk away. I breathed a sigh of relief and collapsed back in my chair.

The reason I sent him away, was because of the disturbing premonition I had from that last card. It was horrible to think about again, but the death I had seen, like many times before, was my own.
