Make a wish when a Blackbird flies

Chapter 18

The first few seconds of when you wake up are always the best; because your brain isn't fully awake yet, you're left with a blissful oblivion of what is going on around you. That's how Frank felt as soon as he opened his eyes, blissfully oblivious. Until everything came back; all his life up to that moment flashed before his eyes in less than a millisecond and he was overcome with such despondency that it would make any stronger man break down in misery.

He slowly lifted his head from his pillow and sat up. As he moved a sudden stab of pain made him cry out and press his hands to his head which only made it worse; his sight went fuzzy and all his limbs felt tingly and numb; he sat there moaning in pain for a few minutes until it finally subsided to a dull throb.

He waited a few more seconds then moved again so that his legs were hanging off the edge of the bed; as soon as his legs touched the cold floor, more pain traveled up his feet and legs making him cringe and bite back a scream. He stood up and immediately had to lean on the wall to support himself; his perception of reality had become distorted and warped, making everything around him seem closer or further away.

He managed to make his way to the door, which he discovered was locked, and started to weakly knock on it.
"Hello? I want to get out now." He said in barely a whisper; he couldn't get anymore out.
He didn't know what time it was - he didn't even know why he wanted to get out - but by what little light was coming in from his window it seemed to be well past morning.

He looked through the little opening on the door, having to stand on his toes to do so,and seeing no one outside he started knocking again. After a few minutes he was ready to give up when he saw a shadow quickly pass in front of his door, before he could do anything there was a loud metallic 'click' and the door swung open a little.

Frank hesitated for a moment then slowly opened the door wider, looking down each hallway, and seeing nobody, came out. He tiptoed along, one hand on the wall, when he suddenly realized he didn't know where he was going and even if he did he didn't know how to get there.

He stopped and looked around, once again he was ready to just give up and go back to his room, but at that moment he heard laughter coming from up ahead; it was a child's laughter and as he looked up he saw a little girl peeking from behind the corner. she had long black hair and dark eyes, and as Frank stared she laughed again and disappeared, so he followed her and as he turned he saw her in the middle of the hall; she ran away again and like before he followed her.

He continued following the girl until after he turned the last corner he found himself in front of the large doors of the recreation room. The girl was gone now so he pushed the doors open and walked through; as soon as he did everyone stopped what they were doing to turn and stare at him.

The first thing that Frank noticed was that there was music playing, someone had put a record in the old player, some kind of french song sung by children. The next thing he noticed was that half of the patients were standing in line to receive their pills from the two nurses, so he had missed breakfast and lunch.

His legs ached already from just standing and walking around, so he made his way to the closest free armchair and curled up on it, ignoring everyone who was staring. He heard someone whispering, someone leaving the room then one of the nurses was by his side.

"Your pills, Frank." She said holding the little plastic cup to him. He didn't look up as he spoke - from where he sat in front of the window he had a somewhat view of the world outside.
"I don't need them, they said they weren't working, so I don't need them." He mumbled.

"You should take them Frank." She insisted.
"I don't want them." He forced out, and suddenly there were hands on his shoulders and someone else was holding his face, shoving the pills in his open mouth. Their hands hurt the burns on the sides of his head; when they let go he spat the pills out, in the nurses face.

She gasped and the men that were holding him started spewing out threats, when suddenly another voice broke out, overlapping everyone else's.
"That's enough." It was doctor Makenzie. "Leave the poor boy alone, he's had enough happen to him."

Frank was slightly surprised that Makenzie was defending him; he waited as the nurses left and just as he was expecting, Makenzie came and sat in front of him.
"Frank? Frank, how do you feel?" He went right to the point.
"It's like there's a party in my head, and everyone is invited...but nobody actually came..." Frank mumbled out.

Makenzie scribbled something down on his notepad. "And the voices?"
"They're gone, but don't flatter yourself, they were gone long before you fried my brain."
"Frank, you must know I gave no consent to what happened last night, people just acted in the moment. I won't happen again." He said, but unfortunately non of what he said was true.

"Can I tell you something?" Frank asked. The doctor nodded his head, hoping to get some kind of confession of guilt. Frank turned his head to the window, and once again spoke not looking at the doctor. "One day, just before I leave this place, I will find you, and I will kill you."
"What?"

"I am going to kill you, and it will be so surprising, your face will be so priceless." He started laughing manically at the image of his vision. Doctor Makenzie, horrified by what he was hearing, got up from his seat and walked off.

"Just wait for it, it'll come out of nowhere and BOOM! YOU'LL BE GONE!" Frank yelled after him, still laughing. Once he had calmed down he went back to staring out the window. He saw a blackbird fly outside; he closed his eyes and made a wish.

Hours later, after he'd had some dinner of half frozen fish sticks, Frank was sitting on the floor in is room rolling a ball back and forth with the little girl he had seen earlier; turns out she was born in the hospital and had died suffocated after being trapped in one of the secret crawl spaces in the basement, and now she just wanted someone to play with.

at that moment someone opened and came through his door. Two male nurses walked in, closing and locking the door behind them, one was holding a bundle in his arms.
"Hey." One said as they both stared at Frank, and he recognized them, the two nurses who always walked him from place to place, the ones he didn't like being near for the things they would think about him.

"What are you doin' up?" Frank didn't answer, just rolled the ball forward to the opposite wall, where the little girl had been but who wasn't there anymore.
"What are you doing?" Asked the other man. Again Frank didn't say anything, he didn't want these men to be in his room.

They came closer.
"Lets put you into bed then." The first one said and pulled him off the ground. They were standing too close to him, one in front of him and the other behind him.
"How long have you been wearing this? You need to change." Said the one behind him.

They were speaking to him as if he were a child, trying to sound calm and soothing, but Frank was anything but calm, he was more scared than ever. When the man behind him tried to take off his jumpsuit he tried to get away only to be grabbed again by both men who were now laughing.

"Hey, where are you going?" With much effort and struggling from Frank they managed to slip his clothing off until he was in just a plain t-shirt and underwear. He tried to make them stop, screamed and begged, but it was no use, they just kept laughing and grabbing him with their rough hands.
They put his arms in something that was then locked at the back, a straight jacket which one of the two had brought in.

At that point they dragged him to the bed, roughly yanked his underwear down and . . . The rest you can probably imagine. They took it in turns, laughing at the way Frank was crying and struggling against them and the pain. Once they were finished they just left him as he was, used, broken and bleeding o bed, they didn't even bother to cover him up.

He rolled over and curled up in the fetal position and just cried endlessly. It felt like he had been crying all night when he felt the locks of the jacket undo themselves; he tore it off of himself and as quickly as he could put his jumpsuit on again. There was blood all over the bed but he didn't care as he sat there staring blankly at nothing.

He looked to the side where the little girl was standing.
"I can't find my mommy." She said in a little voice.
"We'll find your mummy." He told her.
