Make a wish when a Blackbird flies

Chapter 11

Just as I was afraid, the week had flown by and today was our last day which we would be spending by packing everything away in various cars and trucks. I still hadn't seen Gerard today, I guess he wasn't coming. For the past week he had been coming every day and we hung out during my brakes and at the end of the day; while I worked he spent his time at the dining area working on a laptop, I guess he was working on his case.

I was also told he spent a good time chatting up the ladies that worked at the counter so he also got free food and drinks; I think even if he hadn't spoken to them they would have given him free stuff, everyone seemed to like him. everyone except Nate. He still got angry when he saw me with Gerard, I don't know why, as far as I knew they had never met or spoken, but every time Gerard left he would lecture me on getting too close to him.

I guess I was getting close to Gerard despite Nate's protests and my own fear; maybe I just wanted to rub it in his face that I could make friends despite being adamant about people and strangers; I don't think I had much of a choice anyway, Gerard just kept coming back, like some sort of faithful puppy; I love puppies.

I also haven't had a seizure since that night, I haven't had any strange dreams or even my usual nightmares either; I didn't know what it all meant, I guess I should be happy.

Right now I was un-hitching my tent and folding it with the help of two other people; no matter how small it seemed while it was standing, the whole thing was fucking huge when it needed putting away. I was just going to fold it up an stuff it away into my caravan along with the poles and pikes; my caravan was then going to be tied to the back of a truck, where it would be pulled along to our next destination, wherever that may be.

I never bothered to learn the name of the places we were going to, I didn't see the point, to me it was all the same cycle; we got there, we collected money from children and superstitious saps, then left. It was all the same. I was almost finished with stuffing my tent in my caravan - I just opened the door and threw it in - when someone came up behind me and said "Hey!" scaring the shit out of me.

I quickly turned around and there stood Gerard.
"Hi!" I greeted him back, trying to stop the huge smile that was breaking out on my face; just when I thought he wasn't coming. He glanced around at everyone running about, trying to get everything cleared up.
"Looks like today is pretty hectic." He said.
"Yeah, we're just trying to get everything packed up in time to leave this afternoon."

His face fell a little.
"I heard you're going to West Virginia."
"Are we? I never know." I mumbled. We fell into a slightly awkward silence, until as usual Gerard picked the conversation back up.
"I brought you something, like a parting gift." He said as he pulled his hands from behind his back and produced an old and worn hardback book. The title read '101 Places to see'

"I thought, since you don't like going out much, at least you won't miss out on the best stuff out there." He said. I flipped through the book and saw hundreds of pictures of various attractions from all over the world. I got to the very first page, which is usually white, and saw a loopy signature of Donna Way, underneath it a child's handwriting of Gerard Way, along with a list of numbers in a column starting from 8.

"I've had that since I was a kid, it used to be my mother's." He said; I looked at him in surprise and handed the book back.
"Thank you, but I can't take this, not when it means so much-" I started, when he cut me off by pushing it back towards me.
"And I can't take it back, it's yours, I insist." He smiled.
"Thanks." I said taking the book back.

"I also got you this." He said and bent down towards a basket by his feet which I hadn't noticed until now; from it he pulled out a small, brown, fuzzy ball, which turned out to be a puppy. I gasped as he once again held it towards me. "Now this little one, I thought could keep you company while I'm not around to burst your bubbles." I giggled at what he said and couldn't stop smiling at the small creature which I was now tentatively taking in my arms, the book safely placed under my armpit.

It was every bit as soft and cuddly as it looked, it was a German Shepherd.
"Oh my god, this is just too much!" I almost squealed. Like a girl.
"It's quite the opposite actually." Gerard mumbled. I forced my attention away from the puppy and looked at Gerard who was looking at me and smiling widely, showing a perfect smile of tiny teeth, not too small but cute.

"I can't thank you enough for this." I told him.
"You don't need to. I talked to some people here and they said that you're often alone. and when I saw this little thing it was the only one left in the shop, so I thought I could get it for you and then you could be...lonely together, in a good way of course."
"Thank you." I said again. "Not just for the gifts, but everything, being here."

As soon as I finished talking, I did something I hadn't done in a lifetime, I hugged him. This seemed to surprise him as much as it did me because it took him a full 3 seconds to hug back; and when he did, he did so carefully, as if he was afraid I would shatter in his arms. I had to stand on my toes and use only one arm - as the other was juggling with the book and puppy - but it was the best hug I'd ever had.

After a few seconds I pulled away to see him slightly flustered and nervous looking. He coughed and rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly.
"Well, I'd better be going, everyone seems pretty busy here. Um, try to have fun without me and don't miss me too much." He said, making me laugh at the last part.
"Thanks again and I guess I'll see you...when I see you.." I told him.

"Right...um, bye." He said hastily and turned around.
"Bye Gerard." I said to which he turned around again to smile at me briefly, then walked off. Just like all the other times he left, my chest tightened and hurt a little; I watched him walk away for a few seconds then turned away myself, thinking I would spend the rest of the morning in my caravan to get to know my new friend.

No sooner had I made two steps towards it that Nate suddenly appeared in front of me, scaring me half to death.
"Nate, shit!" I breathed out after I gasped. He didn't say anything, just looked at the things in my arms; the puppy was getting slightly restless and I didn't want to put it down for fear it would run away.
"Who gave you these?" He asked bluntly, gesturing to what I was holding.

I contemplated not answering and just walking away, but I wasn't a child, so I told him the truth.
"Gerard gave them to me, like a goodbye present; he gave me a puppy, now I can't say I don't have a roommate anymore." I smiled, nuzzling my face in its soft fur and closing my eyes when it licked my face.
"Where is he now?" He asked again in an unemotional tone.

"He just left, and I was planning on taking a short nap before we leave, so if you could-" I tried to walk past him but he wouldn't let me leave.
"You know you can't keep those right?" He asked again. What was his problem?
"Excuse me? Yes I can, I'm not just gonna leave a puppy on it's own to starve and die!" I said raising my voice a little, making people around us stop what they were doing and listen to our conversation.

I didn't care, I wanted everyone he was a prick.
"Why do you even talk to this guy?"
"Because he's my friend."
"You don't know anything about him."
"I know more about him than I do about you, everyone does, so don't give me the third degree when you haven't been exactly open about who you are. You say I can't trust Gerard? It's you I can't trust, nobody can trust you!" I shouted defiantly.

And for once he had nothing to say back, just looked around him as people stared at him, everyone agreed with me and he knew it.
"Gerard is the only thing outside of this place that hasn't tried to destroy me, and I would like to keep it." I said quietly, then walked passed him, this time he didn't stop me.
