Make a wish when a Blackbird flies
Chapter 10
"So, what's it like? Being able to see stuff before it happens?" Gerard asked me. I was on my break with him, he had waited for me all morning and god only knows what he did in the mean time.
"The future is always harder to see, there are so many different outcomes, so many possibilities." I answered him.
"So how do you do it?" He asked, leaning forward on his arms, like a child listening to a fable; he seemed kind of cute in that moment.
"Well, it depends. If, for example, I were to say that in the next 24 hours you will walk into a brick wall you may spend the next day avoiding brick walls like a plague and instead bump into a tree; I can never fully predict what's going to happen, but circumstantial events seem to stick." I tried to explain.
"Meaning you walk into something anyway but whatever it is can change...right?" He asked.
"That's right." I confirmed with a smile. "But then, that's where the cards come in, those are real, and they help a lot. Basically when I 'look' into the future it's like mixed puzzle pieces, and the cards give me a hint of the whole picture. Sometimes I see visions, those are a little more set in what they show, but basically work in the same way as reading someone's future, the only difference is that I have no control over them." I went on.
I had spoken more than I could ever remember doing in these short few minutes, nobody had ever really been interested in what I could do; I guess it felt kind of nice to share it with someone.
"Okay...What about that palm reading thing?" He asked next, curiosity seeping into his voice.
"That's easier, and by the way, the palm reading is just for show, I don't need to look at your hands to figure you out. I don't quite understand it myself, but it's like watching people and what they do, after a while of observing you figure out that some like chocolate milk and rainy Sundays and others like pudding and are allergic to dogs. It's like that, only it just takes me a second to know all that. I'm sorry if it makes no sense, I spent my whole life trying to figure this out, it's a little difficult to explain to others."
"No, I get it." He smiled. A sudden sense of dejavu' came over me, like I had had this conversation before.
"What about you? You're a detective, how's that?" I asked, making him change his face from curious to pensive.
"Well..it has it's ups and downs. I'm not just a detective you know, I also work in the police force."
"Do you have a gun?" I asked; he smiled and laughed a little, lifting one end of his jacket to reveal a leather harness around his shoulders and a holster by his side with a silver gun inside. It was actually kind of hot seeing him with it.
"Cool..." I stated smiling.
"Yup, had it for almost ten years now; not my first gun though, that one...went missing. Anyway, work, it's...challenging...at times, but i like challenges. It involves a lot of profiling, getting inside the killers head and stuff; sometimes I feel as if I could die at any moment, other times I can't get enough. Then there's actually catching the guy and that's just a mess."
He rambled, and just like he was before, I found myself leaning forward a little in curiosity.
"Have you ever been hurt?" I asked.
"Al the time." He said and stood up lifting his shirt to just above his belly button. The first thing my eyes were drawn to was part of the six pack that was showing. He didn't look so toned with his shirt on; I blushed a little thinking once again that he was hot.
The next thing I noticed was a scar that he was obviously showing me. It was on the left side of his abdomen, right above his hip; it wasn't small or enormous, just a couple of shades darker than his naturally white skin and shaped like an upside down Y, it looked like a stab wound, a pretty bad one.
"I got this a few years ago, I was trying to stop this guy in a warehouse; when he saw me call for backup he stuck a knife in me, twisted it and pulled it out, then held me hostage for about 12 hours. I was passed out by the time they got me out so i don't know how they caught him."
As he was telling the story, not only did I hear it from him, but i could also see it, just fragments, like a clip show and it was a little hazy; I was seeing it through his memories and when he got to the part of the stabbing I flinched, I almost felt it.
"Did it hurt?"
"You know, I want to be a bad-ass and say no, but the truth is, it hurt like hell." He said, I just kept staring at it, transfixed by the perfect imperfection on his skin.
"You wanna touch it?" He suddenly asked, I looked up at his face seeing he was smirking a little at me and for some reason I didn't think he was talking about his scar. But I reached my hand out anyway and quickly passed my finger over it. It was as if the whole thing was just a crack in his smooth skin, the edges around it were rough and hard.
I pulled my hand away when I felt a small electric spark shoot up my arm. HE didn't seem to notice because he pulled his shirt down and sat back down.
"Pretty cool right?" He smiled wide.
"Do you have any more?" I asked him.
"Yeah, pretty much everywhere."
"You'll have to show me sometime." I smiled to which his only answer was a lift of his eyebrow, and I just realized how that sounded; now I really was blushing.
"No! I meant...um...It-it sounds like you have a horrible disregard for your own well being." I stammered out, trying to change the subject; not being able to look at him I just focused my gaze on the table between us.
I could see him frowning a little out of the corner of my eye.
"Well, what's the fun in being a detective slash police officer if I can't take some dangerous risks every now and then?"
"I don't see the fun in almost killing yourself every day.But this is coming from a guy who sits on his ass all day long telling people what kind of meatballs they'll have for dinner. The worse thing that could happen to me is the tent falling over." I complained.
"Well, we're all good at different things, I guess the the way we approach these talents is half the fun. Take my brother for instance, the only thing he seems to be good at is blowing himself up with modern technology, but he has fun picking up chicks at the emergency room." He said making me giggle.
"That reminds me, this time off you have, is it because you got hurt again, or are you just in trouble?" I asked smiling at the end.
"No. I'm actually working on a case, I'm supposed to be anyway. I had to find more information, but I'm stumped. So why not wind down by visiting a theme park?"
"I see; what are you gonna do when we leave?" I asked.
"When you leave? What are you talking about?" He questioned, confused.
"It's a traveling carnival; we stop for only a few weeks then move on to the next town." I told him.
He seemed to be struggling with what he had to say, he was frowning and opening and closing his mouth.
"But I have to stay here." He finally blurted.
"I am aware of that." I said, now confused myself.
"No, I mean, I won't be able to see you...or the rest of the carnival."
"That's okay, we'll be back next year, probably sooner, I mean most of the guys working here are from around here and they don't want to stay away from their families for too long so..." I trailed off, noticing Gerard's face.
He looked completely heartbroken, and honestly, I was feeling pretty close to it too.I felt like I had finally found something lost after years of searching and now it was being taken away again. I glanced at my watch and noticed I had to be at work a few minutes ago.
"Listen, I've gotta go back, but we'll talk when I'm done?" I asked.
"Yeah sure, um...when exactly are you leaving again?" He asked.
I didn't want to answer him, if I did the time would just seem shorter,or like it would pass even quicker.
"Just under a week." I whispered, hoping he wouldn't hear me. He did though and just nodded. "See you later." I said while standing up, he didn't answer, just looked down at the tale; I turned and walked away, glancing back to see him with his head in his hands, it almost looked like he was crying.
