Give 'Em Hell, Kid
The Justice System's Failure
A knock sounded at the door on a Sunday afternoon. Ray wondered who it could be for a moment before realizing no one else was going to answer it.
“Hello?” He said, smiling when he opened the door to find three policemen. They’d definitely come for Frank.
“Are you Mr. Raymond Toro?” They asked. He was a bit surprised at the question, but none the less responded with “Yes. Yes I am.”
“Raymond Toro, you are under arrest for the disappearance and murders of one hundred and twenty seven people in the tristate area. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be held against you in the court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford one, one will be provided for you.” One of the policemen read him his Miranda Rights as the other handcuffed him.
“What the hell?” Ray called, wanting someone to stop the madness happening on his doorstep.
“What’s going on?” Mikey said, coming down the stairs holding Damian.
“Sir, this man’s hair was found at the scene of one of the many murders in the area. I’m sure you’re aware of them.” The third policeman said. Mikey’s eyes opened wider.
“Ray? But... he wouldn’t hurt a fly!” He said. Ray gave him a thankful glance for not mentioning Skylar.
Mikey’s thoughts went back to the day before they’d found that hair, when they’d murdered the old woman in a large house. He’d forgotten to do the laundry that day, and ran out of clean shirts . He’d borrowed one of Ray’s. He didn’t think it would matter. After all, this wasn’t the first time he’d done it. But then again... these things don’t happen often. Mikey shook his head as they led Ray towards the back seat of the police car. That was his best friend. He should do something, right? But he couldn’t confess... he was a father, he couldn’t go to prison. Mikey guessed he would need to discuss it with Frank and Gerard. After all, they’d kill him if he did something stupid and revealed them to the public. After all, they all had children who they couldn’t bear to be away from.
“I’ll find a way.” Mikey mouthed to Ray, who nodded in understanding. Mikey wouldn’t let them get away with this... would he? No. Ray shouldn’t have even been telling himself that. All he had to do now was wait for his trial. If he could get himself through that, he would be free. Perhaps it wasn’t even Frank who’d committed the crimes. Maybe it was someone else entirely. Someone who they didn’t know... Ray hoped it was. It would make everything so much easier to explain.
