Chapter 8: Shopping and Truths.
Mia sat on her memory foam bed, Macbook on her lap. She was online shopping, and so far had spent $450 on various websites, including presents for her captors since it was the end of November. She held Gerard’s credit card in hand, typing in the required information. ‘Spend as much as you want, Mia. We’ve got more than enough money.’ He had said. She had started with the basics: Undies, bras, and socks from Victoria’s Secret. She was sick and tired of her revealing, dirty black shirt. She then purchased shirts, sweat pants and pajamas all from Rue 21, and makeup and jewelry from wholesale websites. And now she was looking for room décor. She added a pretty pink lamp to her cart when Mikey entered.
“Hi, Moikey.” Mia greeted, pulling her curly locks into a bun. “What’s up?” She asked, staring up at him as he sat on the edge of her bed.
“Well, I came to talk to you. During this time you will be able to ask as many questions as you want, it’s more Gerard’s rule than mine anyway. I’m going to explain why you’re here, I know you must be curious.” Mikey said calmly. “Shopping again?” He asked, staring at her computer. All social networking and blog sites were blocked. She nodded. “You’re here for an experiment.” Mikey said. “To test out something called Stockholm Syndrome. Do you know what that is?” He asked.
“Well, I’ve heard about it, but that’s it.” She said, closing her computer.
“Alright, so Stockholm Syndrome is when someone who has been abducted and/or tortured starts to develop feelings for their captors.”
“What kind of feelings?” She asked.
“Well, it could go anywhere from simply caring about that person, wanting to protect them, to even loving them.” Mikey said.
“Oh.” She said quietly. She had definitely been feeling something toward Gerard as much as she hated to admit it. “So that’s your experiment? To see if I would develop feelings for either of you?” She asked. Mikey nodded.
“Exactly. Once the captive has open said something along the lines of ‘I love you’ or expressed some extreme level of care, like taking a bullet for one of the captors, then the experiment will be over, and you can go home.” Mikey smiled. What? Go home? No… This was her home now… she didn’t want to leave them… Leave Gerard.
“Mikey?”
“Yes?”
“… What if I don’t want to go home?”
