Mama, we're all gonna die.
Deceitful lies.
"Gee, are you sure about this?"
"Yes, Frank. I've done this before."
"What?! How many times before?"
"Frank, would you mind being a little more quiet? You don't want us to get caught."
"Sorry, but are you sure we won't be caught?"
"If you keep your voice down, we wont. Now could you hand me the paper clip?"
"Okay but I can't believe you talked me into this. If my mom knew I was dating a criminal, she'd have my head."
"Ha! Not if I get it first." I chuckle to myself as I wrap my cold, pale fingers around the paperclip as I manipulate it's shape. Creating some sort of hook as I manage to pick at the lock.
"Damn, Gee. You actually did it."
"Frank, I'm a master criminal, what do you expect? Juvie did teach me a few tricks you know."
"Fuck Gee, you were in there the whole eighth grade. Do you know how much I fucking missed you??"
"Hey I even got the nickname Party Poison."
"Jesus fucking Christ, Gee. Are you even listening to me?? They only called you that because you got caught from trying to rob a liquor store!"
"Wow, Frank. For a straight edge, you do swear a lot."
"Oh, I'm sorry." I turn my head and I watch Frank drop his head and his hair falls on his stubbly face.
"Hey." I tilt his head up with my fingers as I lean my forehead on his. "I like it, edgy is irresistible."
I watch dimples appear on Frank's cheek as a smile rips across his face. I brush his fringe across his forehead the way I like it as I press my lips against his, lifting his feet of the ground by just a few centimeters before setting him back down. I pull away.
"Ready?"
"I don't really think I have a choice, do I?" Frank sighs as I giggle.
"No, I don't really think you do."
"Fine, let's go Gee."
That's my boy." I adjust my black beanie as I slowly turn the metal knob of the door, without the slightest creek. My eyes force themselves to adjust past the door as the house is pitch black. Knowing it's about three in the morning, everyone in the house is asleep.
I motion my hand to Frank, telling him to go on ahead of me. I follow him into the house as I slowly pull the door shut. I pat my hands against the cheap dry wall as I get familiar with my surroundings.
"Frank, use your phone as a flashlight."
"Oh! Right." I hear the shifts of Frank's black skinny jeans as he reaches for his phone, pulling it out and shining the light a head of us.
I jump back when Frank shines the light as a dog stands in front of us. My heart rattles in my chest as I try and catch my breath.
"Damn, I don't remember the Trancy's having a fucking dog.."
"Who cares? It's cute." Frank practically throws himself on the black dog as I smile when the sight reminds me of a dog Frank had when we were kids. Sweet Pea, he never let her out of his arms.
"Frank."
"Hmm?"
"Stay here with the.. dog as I carry on with my shit. K?"
"Whateves."
I nod to myself as I turn around and pull my own phone out. Shining it down a long, dark hallway.
The walls are covered in cheap wall paper, cluttered with pictures in cheap plastic frames. I knew they were poor but not.. this poor.
I walk passed the pictures not even caring what they're of.. until I pass a big picture in an expensive frame at the end of the hall. A boy dressed in all black with blonde hair and deep blue eyes filled with sorrow. I only know a little bit about the family that lies in this house.. Because I used to baby sit here when I was 14.. I only know that his mother killed herself and their son is named Alois. I've seen him before, considering that I used to baby sit him and that I live down the street. So I know my way around here, and what I'm looking for lies in the basement.
I shake my head of any thoughts as I reach the end of the hallway. I find one door to the right of me and two more on the left. Damn, it's been four years since I been here.. which door is which?
I try my luck with the door on the the right, I open the door without a sound as I end up in a large purple bedroom. About ten feet in front of me lies a bed with the shape of a man sleeping. Bulging from the sheets.
"Sleep tight, asshole." I curse to him as I close the door behind me, without a sound.
I walk back into the hallway where I try the closet door to me on the left, which happens to be the first one. I find a stair case ahead of me.
"Bingo." I chuckle to myself as I flutter my feet down the stairs. I dance off the last step as my nostills fill with a horrible.. metallic.. rotten smell.
I pull my bandanna over my nose. I shine my phone at my feet as I listen to the thumps of my cargo boots on the concrete floor.
I take another ten steps forward before I find several broken booze bottles scattered around my feet. I look father and see a few mounds of liquid vomit..
"Jesus fucking Christ." I curse under my breath as I step over the mess covering the floor.
I shine my phone around the room. I find a scrappy bed in one corner with ripped sheets. and in front I find and old box Tv. Static pictures flash as the static noise is missing.. I get a weary feeling as I walk deeper in the basement. Things really changed since I was last here..
I flash my light to the last corner around me as I gasp for air as the horrid sight. I find a half naked body lay still with shards of broken glass drenched in blood lying around him.. I think I'm going to be sick..
I shine the light to the boy's face as I see his eyes twitch.. Alois.. and he's still alive.
I drop my duffle bag as my knees crash to the floor, the sight can only remind me of the time one of my cell mates killed themselves right in front of my own fucking eyes.
I clutch my head as vivid memories poor into my mind..
"No.. no..noo." I cry to myself as I think of all the blood. His cries.. their cries.. my fucking cries..
"Are you the devil?" The memories fade away as I hear an unfamiliar voice.. "Your hair.. it's red like the devil.. Are you here to take me?"
"Wh-what?" I mutter as I take hold of his arms. Pulling them from his side as I watch Alois carefully as I study the way the blood pours from the glass lodged in his side. I turn his arms over and reveal thick bloody gashes on his arm. Puffy and stained red.
I study him again. I watch the blood drip down his skin and on his green shorts. a pool of blood soaks his black thigh high socks.
"Are you here to take me? I'm ready to die now. I want to be with my mum."
My sight begins to get cloudy as I listen to his crackly voice, thick with an English accent.
"No.. I'm not the devil.." I watch his head cock, as his hair blonde hair shifts. He stares into my with his blue eyes filled with sorrow. His sad.. bloodshot eyes.
"Then who are you?"
"Think of me as an angel.. who's here to help you." I get back to my feet as I snake my hands under his knees and behind his back. Picking him up and walking towards the bed as I set him on the edge, as his feet dangle. I pivot and walk towards my duffle bag as I throw it to the side of the bed, following it I grab my first aid kit. I study his wounds as I remember the suicide I witnessed.
"Why are you looking at me like that?
"Uh. You remind me of a friend I once had.. he killed himself and seeing you now only makes me think of him."
"Angels have friends?" I watch his head tilt again.
"Yes. We can have lots of friends. I have a brother, too."
"Oh. Who was your friend."
"Ray."
"How old was Ray?"
"He was thirteen when he died."
"I'm thirteen!"
"Well, you sure do have a lot of energy for someone who lost so much blood, Alois."
"My daddy says I have ADHD. Hey, how do you know my name?"
"I'm an angel that was sent to help you, of course I'd know your name." I fake a smile to him when my body breaks down on the inside as I pull a disinfectant wipe from the container. I pull back from wiping the blood as I remember the painful stings it leaves.. so I warn him.
"Now, Alois. This might sting, okay?"
"That's okay, you can hold my hand." He smiles and my spirit lifts from the sight. Out of all the wonders in the world.. Seeing someone this close to the edge smile at least once is the most beautiful. I smile back at him too.
I feel Alois' warm hands grip mine as I wipe his arms. His grip grows tighter as his face tenses up. I watch his teeth grind as I clean the wounds. My knuckles pop a few times from his death grip but soon his grip loosens as the cuts are clean.
"It doesn't hurt anymore mister." I look up at his face as he grins at me. "Say, do you have a name?"
"Of course I have a name, silly. It's Gerard, but call me Gee."
'Thank you Gee! You helped me lots!"
"Hey, no probs. Oh Alois."
"Hm?"
"Did you drink all that?" I point to the empty bottles scattered across the floor. I watch his grin turn into a frowny pout.
"Oh.. Yeah. But that was right after mum died. I saw daddy doing it so I thought it would make me feel better.. but all it did was make me feel sick and sad all the time. I guess it does the same to him because he never leaves his room either."
"Alois.. do you really want to die?" I sit on the bed next to him as I watch his body jump up a few inches as the mattress shifts. I wrap my arm around his shoulder for comfort.
"Well.. i just don't want to feel the pain anymore."
"What pain?"
"Don't you ever get the pain in your heart.. That pain that even on the brightest.. happiest days you feel sad. Where you drown in your own sadness. Where everyone notices but they wont help you. Only because they don't know how. You know that pain, right Gee?"
I listen to every precious word that comes out of his sad little mouth. I do know what pain.. he's perfectly described depression. "Alois.. I do indeed know what pain you're feeling. But there are other ways to help yourself besides-"
"Did Ray feel this pain?" Alois cuts me off as I think about his question..
"Yes, I think Ray did.. But the thing is.. Ray didn't have a family like you do.. Even if it is broken. Ray had no one so he thought that no one would cry at his death. He had no second thoughts so he ended his life. But what he didn't know that he touched the lives of so many other people. Like me.. I can't forget what he did. Alois, listen to me. Suicide isn't the answer. I know you lost your mother. But look at how devastated your dad is. Just think of how broken he'd be if he lost you too.."
A long silence speperates our words..
"I never thought of it that way.. but what other way is going to help me?"
I cuddle my arm around him more as I pull him to my embrace. "You're not alone. Many people felt the pain you're in. There's a special place for kids who feel this pain. They make you feel better and you make new friends and everything feels happy again."
"But Gee, you already make me feel happy. If it wasn't for you my life would be a bigger mess than it already is now.."
"It gets better."
"Say, Gee. How do you know all this?"
"Well.. Alois. I was once like you. When I lost Ray I thought suicide was the answer too. But I remember the people who love me, Frank and Mikey. I couldn't dare make them sad too." I roll my black hoodie sleeve back as I reveal many dark purpleish pink scars going all the way up my fore arm. I watch his eyes widen at my wounds.
"We're practically the same, right Gee?"
"Heh, you know what Alois.. Maybe so. But you're going to have to go to the hospital for the glass in your stomach. An angel like me couldn't preform such a task."
"I guess you're right Gee.. But will I have to go alone?"
"I'm sure your father will be willing to go with you."
"But where would you be?"
"Kid, I have to go back home and help other kids who might need me." My heart statters as I lie through my teeth. I'm not an angel. I'm not helping anymore. I'm the complete fucking opposite.
"Oh, okay Gee. Will I ever see you again?"
"Maybe, but not like this. Okay squirt?" I tussle his hair as he giggles again.
"Okay, Gee. I promise."
"Now how can I be sure that this wont happen again?"
"Um, well I simply don't know."
"Well just to be safe.. I'd like to take the alcohol away. So you and you're dad can get better."
"Wow. Gee that's a great idea! Now everything can go back to the way it was.. well almost.."
I tussle his hair again. "It gets better, squirt."
I watch Alois as he points under the bed. "here, dad keeps all his poison under the bed, there's not much left now but it will be like it was never there."
I hop off the bed as I crawl on the floor. Flipping the sheet on the bed as I find two clear, crystal glass bottles. I grab them and I crawl from under the bed and stuff the bottles in my bag.
I stand back to me feet as I'm greeted by a warm hug from Alois. I feel the dampness of the blood still coming from his stomach. "Thank you soo much Gee."
I return his hug as I run my hands through his hair again. "No problem, sport."
"Gee, I do sure owe you one."
I look back down to the bottle in my duffle bag. "Well.. I think this serves well."
"Well I guess you have to go now, huh?"
"Yes, I do. But I promise I'll vist you again. And when I do I expect you do be happy and giggly. Got that?"
"Yes, Gee. So long."
"Bye, Alois."
I try my hardest not to look behind me as I grab my bag and head up the stairs. I walk down the same dark hallway as I meet Frank sitting on the floor with the dog sleeping on his lap. I motion him outside as he follows without a word.
We walk down a few houses before Frank starts cursing me out.
"Jesus Christ, Gee. I waited an hour for you, what the fuck were you doing?"
"Well, Frank things weren't as they seem. But everything's all good."
"Yeah, sure whatever. But did you get what we came for?"
"Yep. But I have to make an important phone call. Then tonight. We have a party."
"Now that's the Gee I fell in love with."
