Chapter One: A New Perspective

Gerard sighed and picked up his messenger bag. Slinging it over his shoulder, he made his way out of the house and down to the curb to wait on the bus. He stood at the curb and waited for about five minutes before awkwardly pulling out his cell phone and randomly searching through his messages and pictures…anything really, just to make him feel less awkward. Five minutes passed and he started thinking. In his eyes, change was good, but always awkward….kind of like when he decided to dye his hair red.

He was still trying to comprehend how he got this way, shy and nervous, because as a kid he was always out going and more or less friendly with everybody. Another five minutes passed and he sighed pulling out his headphones. He while putting in his headphones, he saw another kid, dressed in mostly black, walking down the road in the direction of the school. The boy looked at him skeptically, but kept walking. Oh well.

3 songs later.

Like seriously, what on earth is taking the bus that long. The sun is blazing hot. The bus was supposed to pass here at like quarter past seven so he could reach to school on time for 8.
Sighing again, Gerard pulled out his cell phone to randomly scroll, when a huge 9:29 am met him.
Shit….this means the bus was long gone and school was already in session! Great! Just great! Immediately he began to run in the direction to the school. He had a general idea of the area, but as usually, being new to the neighborhood caused him to take a few wrong turns, end up by at least 3 dead ends, and a few more wrong turns before having to stop to ask for directions.

He should have listened to his father and hired a chauffeur, but being new at a school while it was already in session; paired with the social status of his family and possibly him…he didn’t want to be too flashy. He pulled out his cell phone and checked the time. It was 10 minutes past 10. Sighing…again, he entered the giant school doors and headed straight to the reception office..but with his luck he found himself at a boy’s washroom…and oh gosh the smell! Turning around and heading in the opposite direction, he found himself at a janitors room, then and algebra class..well test, and to be honest, the teacher did not look happy. He decided to swallow his pride.

“Umm sir?” he whispered, but his voice resounded throughout the classroom.
“Yes!” the old man hissed at him, adjusting his spectacles.
“I’m lost. I need to get to the reception office.” He said more like a question. Some students giggled at him…obviously this class was filled with seniors. The teacher sighed.

“What year are you in.”
“Umm…I think junior, I just transferred.” Sighing again, the teacher excused himself and walked to the door.

“Take your first left here, your third right, and another left, either first or second, should take you to the corridors and you just ask a janitor or something from there…now please allow me to go back to my class.”

And with that the man was gone, closing the door in Gerard’s face before he could even say ‘thanks.’ Oh well. After finding the corridors, he was lost…again. Pulling out his phone to check the time, he sighed..yet again. 10:29….10:30.

Almost as if on cue, the bell rang and student’s flooded the halls, knocking him to ground without even muttering an apology, while he sat there like a bum apologizing to their backs. He felt and hand pull him to his feet.

“Uhh…thanks dud-“
“Reception office is right down the hall. You can’t miss the sign.”
And with that, the small glimpse of a black hoodie as well as black jeans and sneakers that he was able to see, disappeared into the rest of the crowd.

Following instructions, Gerard quickly composed himself and headed down the hall, and sure enough there was a sign saying ‘Reception’ in front of an opening. The location sort of reminded him of a cave, since it was basically this big opening in the middle of nowhere…sort of.
“Good morning.” He said trying to sound confident.
“Good day.” The strict receptionist replied. He hung his head.
“I’m new here, just transferred-“
“I would think that is what you meant. I assume you are Gerard Way, judging from the picture in your file. Here is your schedule and you sir are extremely late.”
“Uhh..”
“I suggest you head straight to you next class, sit there and wait for the bell to ring. It was a lovely chat, now get going.”

….umm okay then. Walking down the halls once again, he managed to find the classroom pretty easily, after all he did spend most of his morning on and unofficial tour of the school with no guides so he more less pin-pointed a good bit of ‘land-marks’ for himself.
Sitting down in a generally empty classroom is a lot more awkward than he thought it would be, though nothing beats waiting for the 7:45 bus at 9:00. Gerard decided on looking over his schedule.

First..no secon..no..uhh fourth period Wednesday…algebra. Wait please don’t tell me I have the same algebra teacher as the one from before. Only time will tell. A few more student filed in, including one particularly short guy dressed in black..well sort of. Black converse, black ripped jeans, black hoodie…ripped hoodie might I add. It was zipped right up and the hood was on. The guy walked straight to a corner in the back of the class and sunk low into the chair, immediately closing his eyes and sleeping.

…………….

The bell finally rang for lunch to be over. Gerard understood that on a Wednesday, the school let out the last two periods for club activities, so now he just needed to find a club to join.
Walking into the hallway, he felt slightly overwhelmed with the swarm of students the surrounded him, more like a fish out of water, completely unsure of himself, which was pretty much a new feeling. He came up to a notice board and took a look at all the clubs that the school offered.
“-Horseback Riding/Training
-Karate/Kendo/Martial Arts
-Swimming
-Choir
-Band
-Agricultural Science and 4h club
-Visual and Performing Art…”

The list went on and on…about 17 or 18 clubs in total, and to be honest Martial Arts looked like the best thing right about now. Sighing and feeling completely defeated, He headed out to the bleachers, where he got a good view of the Football club, as well as the cheerleading club and the track club as they trained.
Right now seemed like a good time to clear his head from all the fuss and change he was adapting to. He walked to the top of the bleachers which were partially weather-proofed, in other words, instead of having a regular housing, there was this clear, plexy-glass construction that did no help in keeping the heat down.

He immediately took a seat and sighed, trying to relax as the clouds covered the sun. Of all the times to be shoved right into a new school, it had to be now. He had finally gotten this straight in his head:
Change was good, but most times, change sucked dick. He was being brought on to lead the investigations of the recent assassinations, which he didn't really want to do. This ‘Ghost’ guy was moving fast, or whatever organization he was with, after all that was Gerard’s theory.

Even though he was always seen to work alone, Ghost must be working for some secret organization. After all, what could a single person gain from killing all these men in charge of the nation? Sure, most of the victims made some bad decisions, but that does not justify their deaths.
Just Sunday the Minister of Works and Transport was killed, and then the Minister of Finance was assassinated yesterday! Gerard knew he shouldn’t be thinking about work during school hours, but this was definitely worth mulling over.

His thoughts were interrupted by a cell phone ringing. He pulled the device out of his pocket and stared at it when the noise stopped. This was strange. He had not a single missed call neither was he being called. Once more the sound came…from his right to be precise.

He looked over to see his dark angel, the silent shadow that watched him through-out the day, ensuring his safet- “okay now you’re just being ridiculous.” the soft, yet rough voice came, pulling him out of his little ‘Shakespeare’ moment.
He shook his head and paid attention to the boy, who quickly looked over his shoulder to spot him staring. Oops. Gerard felt his face flush with embarrassment as he stood, more or less unsure of what he was about to do.

“Look…” the boy turned back to his call, “..i said I don’t want one, and heck no on that little ‘job offer’ of yours. I’ll get you back later.” And with that he hung up, stood and…smashed the phone?

Gerard looked on, slightly amazed as the boy threw the phone with great force to the ground, picked up the open pieces, only to break them up and throw them to the floor again, to stamp and grind them with his heel. And just when Gerard thinks he’s over with it, he bends down, takes the sim card and rips it in half, chewing the tiny chip before giving it a final grind with his heel.

The boy looked up and caught eyes with Gerard before smiling shyly.
“Oh..sorry bout that. Hey!” Gerard closed his mouth and sucked on his tongue a little before answering,

“Uhh…I don’t think the phone’s gonna come for you anymore.Ha..ha” He laughed nervously at his fail attempt to seem pleasant.

“Dude chill, that was just a precaution. It’s annoying when someone wouldn’t leave your phone alone and stop calling.” Interesting.
“Have you ever considered turning the phone off?” The guy sat in thought.

“That was another option. Guess I just wanted to vent some stress out, ya know?”
“Oh..uh sure yeah. Weren’t you the one in my algebra class that slept straight through?”
“And the one who picked you off your butt, and the one who directed you to the Receptionist’s desk and the one who saw you waiting for the 7:45 bus at 9 am? Yeah that was me?”

“Whoa, are you stalking me?” The guy chuckled.
“Yes. Yes I am. Just kidding ya. I know new kids have a hard time around here, it just isn’t easy man.”

Gerard nodded in thought. “Uhh..yeh..i guess.”
“So, where are you from? If you don’t mind me asking.” The guy looked at him quietly, almost expectantly.
“Actually, I mind. Sorry.” Gerard felt badly. He didn’t want to make it sound like he was pushing the guy away, especially when he was so nice, but he couldn’t risk it.
“I don’t mean anything though.”
“Oh. Naw it’s cool man.”

A silence fell over the pair and Gerard found himself staring at the guy. He watched as he pushed his hand to his face and pressed in while dragging them downwards, before running his hands down his neck and pushing them outwards, while groaning at the sensation of blood rushing through his body.
He noticed how tense the boy looked, as well as the dark circles under his eyes, which were obviously covered in make-up, but he chose not to mention any of this.

Desperate for a change of topics or some form of conversation, Gerard spoke the first words that came to his mind.

“So, do you know the Minister of Finance was assassinated yesterday?” The guys shoulders tensed ever so slightly, which would have passed unnoticed, if it wasn’t for all the training Gerard’s dad put him through, prepping him to take over as Head of Security, a very sensitive and complicated topic on Gerard’s part.

“Uh.yeh I heard it in the news. The school had some kind of thing for him earlier in the day, and I believe we’ll have to view the funeral next week Monday I believe it is.”

Now, Gerard was concerned about the fact that the school would be viewing the funeral, because he would be there and he also had to make a short speech. However, that could wait I bit.

“How do you know the funeral would be next week Monday?” At present that information was classified, only a few higher ups knew the details, it would be announced on Saturday. So how did he know?

“Oh..basic common sense really. I mean, considering the fact that he was assassinated; the officials would most likely perform a general autopsy on the body by today and put him into preservation. The news report said he was shot. A bullet’s a bullet right, there’s no need to do any big observations on him, and he was single, therefore not much family they’d need to wait for, and I doubt they’d want to keep a dead carcass on their hands for more than a week.” The guy shrugged. Gerard just looked at him.

“Who are you?” He asked. The guy looked at him and smirked.
“Who are you?” He replied, placing emphasis on the ‘you’, before taking up his bag and leaving.

…………………………

“Complete first day of school without a mental breakdown…check.” Gerard sighed into the chair he occupied, which was in the corner of a coffee shop. He looked around at the people who came in and out and observed each of them.

He envied them all…being able to live in a normal family, not having to stress about the government and the state of the country..much. Being able to grow up with normal relationships, normal hardships. Sometimes that was what he craved the most, just a normal life. A life without the social status, without the fame, without the money…just a normal life. He sighed again and finished the last of his coffee before getting up to leave; he had home-work to do.

…………..

The next day was mainly uneventful. He got to school…on time, got through the day, waited on the bleachers for the mystery dude, he didn’t show up, and then he’d finished his classes and headed home to another headache. Friday was slightly different. He was on his way to the last class before lunch when he was almost knocked over by someone. He turned looked up just in time to see the guy he’d been looking for, running off like he’d just stolen something.

“Hey…hey dude!” He called, but he was knocked over by at least 3 quarter backs who seemed to be chasing after the mystery man.

Gerard picked himself up and ran after them. Students parted the hallways for the jocks, but unfortunately crowded the hall for him. Well so he thought. It only took him about 2 seconds to realize they had caught the boy and were now roughing him up. The kids just decided to make a circle around the scene.

Gerard pushed through the students just in time to see the jocks pushing the guy around back and forth between them before forcing him to the floor, kicking him and calling him names. He was about to rush in when some random blonde girl ran up to them and jumped in front the boy.

“Please stop! You’re hurting him!” she screamed at the main guy…the biggest of them all actually.
“That’s the point! Now get out of my- oh hellooow. How did I walk past you? You’re actually kina cute?” His friends laughed.
“Eww!” she said and went to grab the guy on the ground..whose name I still did not know.

“Nick, Danny, Grab her!” The other two who were laughing rushed to her side and pulled her wrists while the other guy remained to beat the crap out of…”Frank!” the girl yelled.
So his name was Frank. Gerard walked right in the circle and stood up to the bully..who conveniently towered at least 5 inched above him.

“Look. I don’t mean any trouble, but you really may wanna leave right about now.” Gerard said to him. All forms of common sense seemed to have returned when the boy turned and looked at him. ‘Oh God Gerard what on earth are you thinking!’ he screamed in his head.

“Oh look at this guys, Frank the faggot made a friend!” At that moment, the tall one turned his attention fully to him, and Frank took this opportunity to get up and run away.
‘Oh..great thanks a lot Frank!’ Gerard thought. How could he just leave him like that! After all he came to help!

“What were you saying..punk!” The guy said to Gerard. Gerard cleared the lump in his throat and gathered up all the courage he had.
“I was saying, you may wanna leave right now. You’ve caused enough troub-“ His words were cut off when the guy threw a punch for him. Gerard leaned to his right to dodge it.

“Wilder! Leave him alone!” The girl screamed. Gerard almost forgot the she was still pinned up by this guy’s purse dogs.
“You’ve caused enough trouble. Just go.” He finished. Wilder smirked at Gerard’s bravery.
“I see you’re quick. Look you sure do have some guts standing here..because as far as I’m concerned, your little ‘friend’ left you.” Damn!

“Hey Wilder!” The guy in front of Gerard, Wilder, turned around to be sprayed in the face with a fire extinguisher.
“Frank?” He came back!

The girl suddenly wriggled herself out of Nick and Danny’s grasps in on quick movement before jumping and splitting in the air, just enough to kick the in the nuts at the same time, which I assure you must have hurt because she was wearing combat boots. When they doubled over she kneed Nick in the face and flipped over Danny, before running to catch up with Frank…She must’ve been a cheerleader.
“Guys wait up!” Gerard screamed, running to catch up with them and the three of them ran to the bleachers.

“Dude! What was that all about?” Gerard screamed at Frank. Frank just looked at him.
“Frank!” Gerard was getting his attention.
“How do you know my name?” He asked. Gerard just looked at him exasperated.

“Because it just so happens to be Combat Barbie here’s favorite word!”

“The name’s Stephanie.” She glared at him. He sighed and tried to regain his composure.
“Look I’m sorry.” He said lowering his tone.
“My name is Gerard Way, I transferred here on Wednesday.” He stretched out his hand to the girl who then introduced herself.
“I’m Stephanie Mayer.” Gerard nodded and they both turned their attention to Frank. He just sighed.
“I’m Frank. We already met.” Gerard nodded in acknowledgement.

“Good. Now back to this. Why didn’t you fight back Frank?” He asked with a concerned look. Stephanie looked at Frank as well.
“It’s true, you never fight back, and I know it’s not that you’re afraid to get into trouble.” Frank looked at them with a blank expression. Gerard gasped.

“Wait. Do they do that regularly? Why don’t you-“His question was cut off.
“I hate those guys so flippin much. And if I were to fight back, I’d end up in jail.” Was this guy serious? One look at Stephanie and you can tell she believed him. She just looked so understanding. Gerard was now taking in her appearance.

She had light blonde hair that was brushed neatly and fell almost perfectly over her shoulder and framed her face. She had a light almost pale complexion, but not a sickly looking pale, just…pale. Her jawline was slightly broader than most, and she had thin lips and a wide, broad smile. Her eyebrows were neatly done as well as her make up. One could easily tell she wasn’t like most girls. She didn’t have on a pound of lip stick, a cup of eye shadow and 3 bottles of mascara.

She did a simple smoky eye look which framed her beautiful brown eyes perfectly. And instead of those skimpy short skirts and over-revealing tops with these massive high-heels, she was wearing a simple white t-shirt, a cream-ish pea-coat with a black scarf, blue jeans and combat boots.

Frank however was in consistency. Grey t-shit, black jeans, black sneakers, washed out black hoodie. He was also a lot shorter than most, if I had to guess I’d say he was around 5’4, and he has a lean built body. His face however, was intriguing. It was slightly feminine, yet so masculine. His brown hair was long-ish, stopping just above his shoulders.
He had light brown eyes with little specks of green and gold in the irises, and he too wore eyeliner, but not as heavy as Stephanie…strange. He still had these dark circles under his eyes which were, still, covered with concealer and he had a lip ring and a nose ring. Speaking of lips, those lips were moving.

“Huh?” Gerard asked. Frank just smiled.
“You kind of zoned out there. You were staring me n Stephanie down like there was no tomorrow.”
“Oh…sorry bout that.” Frank giggled and pat his shoulder.
“It’s all cool man.”
