The Helium Wars
"The Scarecrows," I started, "I've heard of them. They are the defense unit of BL/I, right?"
Abby scoffed at my naivete, "More like the oppression division. They are the chief murderers. For example, some people figured out that those miracle pills were bogus. They decided to confront Better Living about it, but they refused to stop giving them to people. These people planned to tell everybody the truth, so BL/I got the Scarecrows to pull some blasters on 'em. That's what started the Helium Wars. Those people that went to BL/I organized a legitimate rebellion. They called themselves the Fabulous Killjoys."
"That's crazy!" Abby nodded in agreement, "That couldn't have lasted very long though, right?"
"I- I don't know.I have been pilled up for a while now. I thought it was still going on..."
"Really? I haven't heard a thing about it. And I've been living out here for a while."
"Not once have you heard of the Helium Wars? Really?"
"I mean... once there was this... skirmish... at one of the refugee campsites where I was staying at... It got so scary- I mean... I could hear the sounds of people dying. I kept my eyes closed and tried to ignore it... but I couldn't. It was-
"Mmm... No need to get too personal on me, Hero. I have only known you for 1 day." I sighed it was true, but I had just one more thing to say. I opened my mouth to say something when,"Mmm... No. Just. No." A small murmur of annoyance escaped my mouth but not much other than that.
"How do you know so much about the Helium Wars,anyway?" I asked her after a few minutes of silence. More silence.
"I don't know..." she replied, "I don't... know..."
"Are you sure you don't really know? Because you said yourself that you had been a pill-head for a while now," I asked, hands on hips.
Abby turned to me, "No. No, it's not like my memories are locked away... They were deleted or something. Like something that was there isn't anymore. A void. It's just- It's gone, Hero! Gone!" I wanted to hug her right then and there. The poor baby.
"Ok, ok. Just calm down, okay? Do you want some water?" I bombarded her with questions regarding her health that even I knew weren't gonna help much. It looked like her head hurt, so i suggested we sit down for a minute and let her breathe.
But I still wanted to know more about the Helium Wars, and my only source of information had lost her mind, literally. I sighed and waited for her to calm down.
After about 20 minutes of silence, I decided we should go. I felt uneasy sitting still for so long in the open.
We stood up and began to leave, "So, anyways," I said, "Is there anything else you can tell me about the Helium Wars?"
Another long pause, "No, not really..."
"The Killjoys?"
"Well, they call themselves the Fabulous Killjoys for starters. And I know where we can find one of them. I just wish I could remember his name..." She looked up, "Okay, So... that's East," she mumbled pointing towards the Sun. " And we need to go... South. So... here!" She turned 90 degrees on her heels and started marching in that direction.
"Were you ever one of them?" I asked. She looked at me with sad, puppy-dog eyes, "I don't know, Hero. I would tell you if I did... But I don't... So, I'm sorry... I mean, how else would I know so much about them though, right?"
I gave her one last hug and South we went. A song popped into my head. I don't remember where it cam from or who sang, but I didn't care... All I knew was that it reminded me of the childhood I lost...
We're off to see the Wizard. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz...
