Disenchanted
New Angels
That was four years ago. I was just a frightened 13-year-old then.I have been living on the outskirts of large cities since then.
Not even days later did one of the rescue organizations, Better Living Industries, start taking control everything, and I mean everything! The food rations came from them. The medical aid came from them. The clothing and shelter came from them. All of it. Soon they came out with this "magic" pill that solved all of your problems. The commercial was pretty persuading as well. Everyone loved BL/I, and started getting upset with the governments few objections. It was basically overthrown in six months. I thought it was a good change, too, until I was about ready to move into a city in Zone 7, New Angels.
At the gate, I was handed the magic pill. One of those ugly, masked men forced me to watch the commercial again. And I had the full intention of taking it, after I looked around for a bit. To this day, I don't know why I didn't take it right then, but I'm glad I didn't. I'll get to that later, though. The gate-keeper was following me around for almost a kilometer though, and I didn't like it, but I decided to ignore it. After taking a look around though, I didn't see anybody. No children playing in the streets. No elders sitting on their porches reminiscing about the good old days.
I saw no one until I was halfway through the city. She was a confused young woman, no older than me. I went over to her to ask if she needed any help, but she replied with a slurred but perplexed, "No, of course not. Everything is perfect... right?"
I gave her a reassuring smile and said, "Here, you look tired. Let's get you home. Where do you live?"
"Oh, um... Ok," she replied, that drowsy smile appearing on her face again.
"But where do you live?"
"Oh, um... I don't- whe- where am I?" Her eyes widened and she started whispering really loudly, but still a bit perplexed, "The pills- NO!- Don't take them! They- They'll hurt you! Hurry! Run! Don't take them. They're coming! Run!"
This girl was mad. She made absolutely no sense. The pills? The pills will hurt me? Who are they? Then her mumbled whispers ceased. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw movement. Just a black and white blur moving swiftly across the street. I twitched and she whispered quickly,
"Did you see them, too? I'm not the only one? They are watching? You saw them, too?"
I half-heartedly dismissed the idea, "I-I don't know- what are you talking about?" Another shift.
"Dang it. I thought," More movement, "There! Did you see it?"
I huffed, "Um, uh... No.. Nothing... I- I didn't see any-" Then the figure was running toward us, not saying a word. The only noise you could hear was his footsteps.
I didn't have time to think. I grabbed hold of the girl's wrist and pulled her behind me as I ran.
"Haha! I told you!" She laughed, already out of breath, "I told you they were watching!"
"Stop talking!" I yelled as the sirens started.
I turned around and 15 more of them were joining the first. They had guns- white guns- with them and we were staring down the barrel. I mean- if we were actually looking at the them, but we were a little busy running away. So... Yeah.... I heard a pew and ducked- terrified by the strange noise. I looked up and a beam of light soared above me. Those things weren't normal guns they were freakin' ray guns! I didn't think those even existed!
Right, so we were running- this girl and I- from the people with ray guns and vampire masks. What the heck was that about anyway? The sirens were blaring and suddenly- wall. We stopped short. Godangit! I looked to my left seeing nothing. And then to my right. YES!
"Door! Doordoordoordoordoordoor! Turn right! Now!" I screamed as the masked men drew near. So we banked left, followed closely by these vampire men, by not even five meters.
My new friend turned around and chuckled, "Ooh, that's got to hurt!" She could barely take a step forward. It was like she was drunk or something.
We ran out of the city. What was it called? Los Angeles? New Angels? Whatever. It didn't matter. We were out of it. Thank you, God. I love you.
I looked down for a second, and smiled, "Hold on a second! Wait! Wait a second!" I leaned down and picked up a blaster that had been littered on the ground for no apparent reason. I laughed into the hot desert air. Sometimes, I really want to believe in luck.
I turned around and started to shoot randomly at the masked men. Whether I missed or hit, I didn't really care, because it worked. They started backing away.
"That's right Chickens! You don't want none of this!" I shouted, shooting at the sky like a maniac. Then I remembered my new friend. Did I lose her? I looked all around me. And then at the ground. She had collapsed onto her face, probably from that strenuous physical exertion of half a kilometer.
I laughed out loud and then freaked out a little. She could have passed out. I flipped her over.
"Are- are you okay?"
Well, she definitely didn't pass out. She smiled at me a goofy and delirious smile:
"That. Was. FANTASTIC! Absolutely FANTASTIC! Can we do it again? Please?! Oh my God! So much FUN! But, uh, I'm gonna need one of those blaster things," she blubblered, still woozy from that pill no doubt. How did she end up taking them if she knew they were so evil anyway? Also, who the hell was she? That was probably the best question to start with.
"Hey, um... What is your name?"
"Ok, give me a second," she mumbled with a perplexed look on her face. She sat up and continued,
"Um... I think it's... Ahhh.... A...lly? Abby? It sounds right, but... I don't know... Give me a day or so. That's about how long it takes for the aftereffects of the pills to wear off."
"How did you end up taking those pills, if you knew... not to...?
"Well," came her sarcastic remark, "have you been living under a rock or something?"
"Mmm... Basically, except its more of a tent..."
"Obviously, you don't know what a rhetorical question is. So, basically this "magic" pill is supposed to solve all of your problems like magic.
"Yes, I did see the commercial." I retorted.
An exasperated sigh escaped her lips, "Please, let me finish. Anyway, the pills don't solve your problems, it just makes you stop caring about them. It numbs you. That's why the Draculoid was following you, right! You didn't take the pills when he gave them to you?"
"No, I uh... I didn't, but those things... They are called Draculoids?
"Yep. You definitely live under a rock."
"Gee, thanks for that." I said, insulted, "Whatever. C'mon. We should probably get out of here before they come back." I started walking away from the city. Slow-poke though, was still on the ground.
"Hey!" She shouted, "Wait for me!" I laughed and kept on walking. She stumbled towards me, not able to run a straight line, "Jesus Christ, woman! You can't be a littler slower for me- a handicapped little girl?" She said in the sweetest little voice. I started laughing harder, but stopped.
"You mean mentally handicapped right?"
When she finally made it to where I was standing she scoffed and mumbled to herself, "Yeah, right. You're the one who didn't know what a Draculoid was." We both snickered and walked into the darkening horizon. So where do we go from here?

Notes
Ok, since no one seemed to like my first chapter I decided to keep going anyways. A comment would be appreciated though. Just sayin'.ChemicalWhovian
