Where There’s Life, There’s Hope.

Chapter Four.

Frank and Ray stumbled into the restaurant tripping over the welcome mat that was folded up. An exasperated sigh left Frank’s lips as they headed up to the hostess stand.
The dimly lit foyer was filled with photographs that mapped out the history of the Italian family that started the place since the beginning of the 20th century. Frank had to stifle a laugh, being Italian himself he knew all too well how boastful some Italians were about their families. He himself was guilty of boasting about his heritage all too many times. It was the typical BAM! Look at me! I’m Italian, so I’m sexy ‘cause I was born where pizza was invented! Okay...maybe it wasn’t that out-there but it was something along the same lines of that.
Frank let a sigh out when he came face-to-face with a framed newspaper from September 11th. The day the earth stood still. He wondered how they got it framed so fast, looking at the elegant fake gold winding frame.
“Hello there! How many?” The over-tanned brunette behind the desk smiles looking up from the newspaper she was glancing through. She smiles at us surveying us up and down but keeping her smile in place.
“There’s 5 of us all together.” Ray smiled back towards her after calculating in his head the amount of people.
“Alrighty then! Right this way!” she scurried out from behind the podium grabbing 5 menus from the shelf underneath it. We followed her into a cliché dark red room with red and white checkerboard tables. We were sat mid-way through the room right beneath a fish tank filled with beautifully colored gold-fish. The two slid into the booth, all the way to the wall beneath the fish-tank so the others could easily sit right next to them. “Amanda will be shortly.”
And she was gone. Frank starred down at the menu quietly analyzing it for anything basically vegan, being that he suffered from more food allergies than he could remember anymore. There were lots of noodle dishes, and pizza...nothing he could eat...unfortunately.
Finally giving up, he decided on a house salad and a big-ole glass of Ice Tea.
“Matt swears this place has the best provolone on the east coast.” Ray smiled behind his menu.
“Really? That sounds really good.” Frank pretended to be intrigued, suddenly sad he couldn’t order it.
Ray agreed announcing he might order a personal pizza with mild excitement. The waitress had wandered back to their table and introduced herself as amanda. She took the two boy’s drink orders as they waited for the rest of their ‘party’.
“I’m going to go the restroom.” Frank said sliding out of the booth once she left and headed towards the bar to grab their drinks.
“Don’t fall in! Be sure to close the barn door, Frankie darling!” Ray annonced making Frank turn scarlet and hurry off faster as the couple diners in the room stared at them.
“Fuck you!!” he exclaimed disappearing out of the room into the restroom. As the door closed to the bathroom he heard an exclamation from the dining room:
“TORO!!!!!”
Frank froze his hand on a stall door. That voice...that sickeningly familiar voice suddenly had his stomach twisting itself into a tight nauseating ball.
